It’s a symptom of a bigger problem, which is that KZbin is soulless now. There’s an incredulous lack of passion and creativity, and the cut and paste editing style in almost EVERY video essay of the stupid camera snap sound effect and the heavy swoops with that disgusting rice gum transition on every shot is just more fuel to that. Everyone sounds the same, does the same thing, and nothing feels special anymore. It’s skating closer and closer to normalizing brain dead and monotonous content that an AI could (and already) churn out.

honestly i think it depends on the person who sees the thumbnails, some people dont really care about like super high quality thumbnails and would generally prefer something a bit more simple and easy to look at, others prefer hyper edited content and over exaggerated thumbnails, personally speaking i prefer simpler thumbnails (by simple i mean it generally conveys what the idea of the video is going to be about) and its what compels me to watch the video and be interested)

Some of my favorite thumbnails are from "Totally Not Mark". When a video is about a show, he usually places a character on one side and text on the other, over a simple background. There's an extension called DeArrow that removes clickbait from KZbin. Yes, there are other extensions that do the same but DeArrow takes it to a whole new level by allowing custom thumbnails and titles. It's like an antidote for brainrot and ragebait

My least favorite thumbnails are ones that put an important part of the video title in the thumbnail, but they leave that part out of the actual title! For example, the thumbnail might have text that says "Why KZbin Thumbnails Suck" and the video in question is titled "And How to Fix Them". There's a plethora of accessibility issues that stem from this. What if someone comes across this video while browsing KZbin with a screen reader, most of which don't try to read text from images? What if someone sees just the title of this video in their notifications when it comes out? What if someone simply has slow internet and the thumbnail doesn't load for them? In any case, they'll never know what "And How to Fix Them" is about. By trying to make the thumbnail take the role of the title, the title ends up losing its purpose when it matters most.
