YouTube Video Outline (Better Than Writing a Script)

So, I started a channel and currently recording the first 3-5 videos for my channel. At first I was writing a script and reading word for word. While doing that, I am always nervous, sounding robotic and by just watching the video you can tell that I am reading off something. So one day, I decided to just go in front of the camera, and record. Nothing planned, no script, no outline, I didn't even have a topic when I pressed record. By the time I was done recording, that video was the best video I have recorded so far. I was so confident, as I was talking, lots of ideas was flying into my head and I was chopping them in. I was actually my real self. I think the outline method is just the best for me and I will stick use that method.

I'm a starter KZbinr, and I do word for word because I think It is a great way to write a script for beginners. However, I feel my delivery is robotic and certainly not me and not my personality talking to the crowd.

I go either indoors to outdoors etc and change backgrounds or stand in front of a building or in a cafe or significant location. This makes it very binge worthy for my viewers and mixes things up and keeps it all interesting for myself and my viewers all the time.

Starting to make content again and this is definitely something I'm going to try. I like word for word scripts as it gives you an idea but always find it so hard to execute as it doesn't feel organic so hopefully this helps! Thank you

For me its more the time it takes to write a script. I typically do scripts as my videos are more voice over style and while that makes recording easy it also adds a lot of time to my production just writing. Love the idea you had of mixing both with just bullet points with some parts being close word for word. I'm definitely going to give that a try.

WoW! This really helps me out. When I'm filming clients, I try to have them write out their scripts and to the same thing of having them read the off-camera parts and memories the few on-camera parts. Casey doesn't seem to mention anything about how he writes his scripts or using a phone like MKBHD with the bolded vs not bolded parts... But it makes a ton of sense that they would do it that way. 3:23 > your example of doing simple lists / bullet points helps

For tech specs it makes a lot more sense to script because it is word soup and just like your pacing when you say a phone number you don't just spit out 10 digits no pauses. From what I have heard actors take classes specifically on using teleprompters

Thank you for sharing the backend of outlining. For the moment i decided to script. I talk in my phone to have a first draft, then transcribe and enrich. As Im a big fan of slide with 3 bullet points on them, i would love to switch to outline mode but i dont know how to improvise on each point. I guess you need some patterns in mind, like the 5Ws and be able to talk in sequence naturally to improvise. Same for storytelling, you need to have some framework in mind like SPQA if you want to improvise them. Lets see in the long term

I'm struggling with my next video, as reading my script is just awful and I honestly don't like doing it. I've tried recording it 3 times and I don't feel it and I don't like what I'm hearing. I want the voice recording to sound like how I would sound IRL having a converstation. Although my best performing videos have all been reading of a script word by word, I want to try another style. So here I am, and thank you for the video. I'm gonna try this bullet points style!

Mega Thx for an Awesome video. I’m just getting started to make some videos. As a retired Marine I’ve had plenty of experience teach in both formal and informal settings so for me I prefer using bullet points as long as I know the material/topic for that segment. Then for some sections I may need to change the camera angle to roll into periodic areas where I may be more detailed from a script of some sort. I do appreciate how you’ve presented everything here and it will definitely assist me in combining both styles. Thanks again for your great ideas & input.

This is really helpful! You described my struggle to a T! When I write out my script word for word, I trip up so bad it ends up not being helpful… anddd using a teleprompter personally just doesn’t feel authentic for my content specifically. So too detailed = not good for me! But I’m also bad at totally winging it - so for me it’s best to have that middle ground too!! 😂

I photograph backyard birds and wild ducks. It's the same thing over and over so I feel I don't have anything new to talk about which is why my channel is slow to grow. Obviously the people succeeding are the ones that review photo gear but I'm not going to do that. Any ideas? Thanks!!

At 35 seconds onward you talk about Casey having vlogged for 2 years. Then say you don't exactly know how long. So here is the thing. How am I as a viewer to take the rest of your video seriously when you could not be bothered to do a bit of research to find out exactly how long a person you use as an example did something. My thoughts are then that you probably thumbsucked the rest of the video as well and did not bother to check facts. Which leaves me with the choice of risking my time to watch the rest of the video to find out, as well as possibly using some of your advice that could be wrong. Obvious choice, I just click away and watch another video. If you had said, Neistat vlogged for 800 days, which is actually part of the title of one of his videos "3 Things I learned from 800 days of vlogging" which I found in a second by typing into Google "how long did Casey neistat vlog for", I would have went, that's an interesting fact I did not know. I wonder what other things I am going to learn from this video. And kept watching instead of swiping away.

So much analysis on someone else’s KZbin video. Everyone is learning and growing. You don’t have to put him down. He did a fantastic job and he probably didn’t bother to focus on the detail you mentioned because it wasn’t directly relevant to the message and that’s basic writing wisdom when you’re trying to be concise. He still delivered awesome and valuable content. Only those who are extremely critical and find it hard to trust will focus on one error and use it to devalue all he said without actually reviewing the content itself for themselves. You truly need a lot of healing as your handle says

@@thesower6577 When you make content, you choose what goes into the video and what not. Viewers can see the level of effort in your videos which directly affects average view time. KZbin algorithm looks specifically at average view time as a measure for if your video should be promoted to more people. So one way to get people to watch your video for longer is to increase the quality and effort you put in. This will help him and a lot of people if his videos are viewed by more people. And it is a small change he can do. I by no means spend a lot of time analyzing his video. Why are you getting triggered by someone pointing out to another creator how he can improve his videos to get more views by giving a run down of what did not work in his video? What if he took the advice and 10X his views? If I really wanted harm to him I would have said nothing and allowed him to keep making a mistake I know is hurting his views and channel. I myself would welcome another creator pull my videos apart and tell me what is not working so I can make better content and get more views. But most creators don’t want to help other creators succeed.
