No doubt. Having my young adult coming of age experience growing up in a sort of pseudo-anarchist microcosm of my hometown, I was taught a strong sense of community but left in my mid twenties with a poor understanding of my own entitlement to assets of any kind. It was only I suppose fashionable to speak about total abject poverty and homelessness so once I’d achieved any level of stability my community didnt really have anything to say to guide my experience past that :( I was living at half of the poverty line back then and I am just below the poverty line on a pension now. It isnt much but it’s stable and I’m excited to rediscover budgeting again through channels like this

Conservatives like to over-sell how much agency individuals have in improving their lot, but there is a legitimate personal benefit to the optimism bred by this sense of agency and a legitimate danger to underestimating your own power. I think the problems start when successful people whose optimism was vindicated turn around and judge those who didn't get lucky and start making policy decisions that affect everyone based on their own personal experience.

Is a individual responsible for poor decision making , or is the individual decision making a result of their enviroment/life long circumstances ?
@angelikaskoroszyn84953 жыл бұрын
@Kris Smiley The answer is yes. We're both a result of our nature and nurture. The real question is which is more important Scientists have been arguing about it for years but one thing is evident: 100% individualistic approach is unnatural for human species since we're very sociable monkeys. Or, as someone once said "we live in a society"
@krissmiley75193 жыл бұрын
@@angelikaskoroszyn8495 I agree that it is both, So the conservatives tend to favor a individuals ability to make good decisions and seem to overlook the fact that a large swath of people are not mentally able to make "good" decisions .
@krissmiley75193 жыл бұрын
Point in case . I know several ladies aged 30-40 yrsold who make. Around 40k a year who are single mothers of 3-5 children ,the conservatives would question why these ladies who make so little would spend $100.00 or more a month on their hair and nails , purchase a vehicle that requires 30% of their monthly income to own , or why they continually mated with several different poor providers to began with , the conservative would instinctively cut all excess expenditures , and take that money and invest or pay off debt and would within 5-10 years dramaticly change their financial situation
@Lack_Of_Interest3 жыл бұрын
@@krissmiley7519 While it is true that twin studies do show that nature does play some part, it is overshadowed by nurture elements (e.g. environment and parenting). It is also true that a large portion of the population is 'uneducated', but it is so due to bad education policies and industrial interests. A progressive would provide explanations for these situations. For example, (I will try to follow your example): Mothers (let alone single mothers) are often seen as not reliable in the workforce (i.e. stereotypical mother role), and thus are paid less than single fathers (i.e. provider role) that might make double or more. This wage gap could be solved by addressing discriminatory business practices that allow workers to be undercut. As for single mothers with children, perhaps these mothers were not ready for motherhood, but the state criminalized contraceptives and abortions. If we want people to be responsible, we have to provide the option and tools necessary for them to do so. On a tangent, having children is a good thing because states can run into problems of not having a large enough workforce for an aging population. So, we should be either be allowing more child allowances to incentivize child rearing or encourage more immigration to supplement the workforce. When it comes to spending on cosmetics, spending a $100 a month is not that bad. However, the point is that we live in a patriarchal world where men hold the 'wealth' and women have the 'aesthetics'. Spending money to not get socially ostracized might be a cost worth having; though, I think we should abandon this toxic norm in favor for something more egalitarian and practical. Vehicles are important to have; not just because of the car culture, but because housing areas are often distant from the workplace. Highway and public transportation infrastructure is sorely lacking. This then puts the burden of transportation on that of the individual. Otherwise, the individual could move, but this is often more expensive in the form of mortgage or rent. As for poor providers, the argument just sounds like 'poor people' should not have children, which sounds like a eugenics argument. As mentioned above, we kind of need more human capital less we the strain the already buckling system too hard. Remember, we should not mad about people having children, but be concerned about the conditions in which they are born (e.g. born into poverty'). Meaning, this is an economic issue and can be solved accordingly. From the evidence I have read, it seems single conservative mothers or fathers are, generally, worse when it comes to the aspects that you have listed. Usually, the ones that do the things listed are ones that are couples, are already well-off, and not single. Bottom line: Hopefully, we can all continue to learn how to better improve our society for everyone as a whole.

Not that the system isn't rigged, but that regardless of the system, you will only have success if you work make progress in your own path and own success. Work to improve the system, the government, and your society, but if you wait for the government to make systematic changes before improving yourself, you will die waiting and most the changes won't substantially change your lot in life anyway. For instance, Dave Ramsey is advises people to pay off their student loans an not wait for the civil servant grant after 25 years of carrying the loans or count on the democrats to cancel all debt, but to pay it off themselves as fast as they can because that freedom from debt is guaranteed vs waiting for the government to grant you a free pass.

Wow the channel title sounds like something I wouldn't care about but I clicked thru for Big Joel, turns out this lady is smart and awesome and interesting. I have now subscribed. Meanwhile am I the only Big Joel fan who had no idea his name wasn't Joel?? :O

All the reasons that I love Chelsea and The Financial Diet as well as Big Joel. The discussion of Jordan Peterson is spot on. Dickishness (that you identify) notwithstanding, his ideas are so poorly formed that of course they're built on a simplistic idea of wishing, winners and losers and a boostrap narrative that only serves a very narrow slice of people. Fabulous to hear it framed as it should be, around insecurity and fear.

I’m glad I found this interview. I have never heard of Big Joel but I will check his channel out. I have the same insecurities he does about touching his money. I just hoard it but don’t invest it because I’m honestly scared. I come from a working class family and I was never taught how to invest or grow my money. I do have a 401k but it’s a target date funds but I heard those are full of hidden fees, idk.

Amazing as always! I would push back against the idea that GamerGate (and Sad Puppies) had no wider political impact, though - I think its animating force, radicalisation, its helping people find each other and creating momentum absolutely helped incubate parts of the current facist movement.

I am ensconced in the conservative KZbin world because I am conservative. But I also make sure to watch leftist commentary and get the other perspective. Often, like most things, the answer lies in the middle. I think capitalism needs to be regulated and people need to be treated like individuals. The funny part is the right and left actually agree about the power structure of the “elite” vs the rest of us. It’s the culture that is making us believe we are divided along “left/right” lines when in reality, they’d rather have us fighting each other rather than the establishment 👀

@@test42356y I should clarify - I mean the left and right of the voting, American people. In general, I think many people, regardless of where they fall left/right, are becoming more anti-establishment and more populist. So many people believe in “elite vs the American people.” Trump ran on that entire premise. I promise you, I’m nowhere close to being a leftist.

One of my favorite jokes on this subject is that the only real difference between republicans and democrats is that democrats are more competent liars.
@dadbodenvy42473 жыл бұрын
@@dom1161 pretty much all of Trump's policy made life easier for the elite, sure the rhetoric is popular but at the moment anti-elite policy still doesn't really matter much to voters.

Peterson impressed me with how he stood up to his govt, knowing the punishment was prison and bankruptcy. It completely upended the law in place.

it strikes me around the 9 min mark that maybe a lot of Peterson's individualistic philosophy might derive from his area of expertise being predominantly the psychology of addiction. I think he just can't get out of that paradigm much the same way I as a former accountant, economics and personal finance nerd, can't get out of thinking of everything in monetary terms. You become what you pay attention to.

I know a small businessman here in sweden who loves capitalism and is extremely market-liberal, he hates goverment-support in form of money for people. But then covid hit, and he instantly became a social democrat begging for government aid, the businessguy that supported Trump dont realise they needs government support
