Filipino guy here, and you’re absolutely right, there are parts of Mindanao that are a no-go zone even for Filipino nationals, unless you’re local to the community. There are multiple terrorr groups in Mindanao that actually fight among themselves at times. They regularly kidnap tourists and locals alike, and don’t get it twisted, they have no qualms about kidnapping wealthy Muslims as well. The Philippine Army and Marines are often deployed to Mindanao to try and keep the peace.

I was born and raised in good ol’ inner-city Baltimore as a kid. There are places we knew by heart where to avoid like the plague because it was a hub for gang violence or drugs. My aunt invited her friend from the suburbs with her spoiled kid to our apartment wanted to check out those parts. We gave him a look and asked why did he want to get stabbed. Apparently, years later, he felt like he was a big guy on the block after they went to some gathering and tried to start a fight about being better than somebody and he really _did_ get stabbed multiple times and had barely survived because the ambulance got their quick. And that’s in the US where the vast majority of people speak English. Imagine starting shit in a foreign country where you don’t even know the language. Not only did he know how bad the area was, not only did he start money lending, not only did he not speak the language or understand the culture, but he was also warned that it was coming. As a Filipino, I've observed that many Western expats in the Philippines tend to overestimate their security. My intuition tells me that the festive, hospitable, people-pleasing culture of the locals, plus their apparent bias toward Westerners, lulls them into an unearned sense of complacency, causing them to do things most Filipinos would consider risky and stupid. I also sense a strong confirmation bias in their insistence that the Philippines is safer, happier, and more socially and culturally developed that their own countries. In their desire to justify their choice to leave, these expats delude themselves into believing the Philippines to be some sort of exotic utopia. I've lived most of my life in the Philippines, and I can only scratch my head at the rose-tinted glasses these foreigners keep wearing. It's also by taking advantage of this naivete that Filipino gold diggers ensnare foreigners into marriage and helping them acquire foreign citizenship.

I am from Mindanao, but in the northern part. It is in the same province from where this guy was abducted but still 6-7 hrs away. The South is big, so I do not agree when people start to generalize by saying Mindanao is dangerous. It is the second largest island in the country. There are a lot of foreigners living in the South, my husband included. He travels around by himself and roams our city without any issues, just like the other foreigners living there. I heard the kidnapping happened because of a love triangle, and I also heard a rumor that, because he was documenting their life online, the people weren't happy about it. He was in an area where the majority are Muslims, and I guess they didn't agree with him documenting everything around him. I could be wrong, but that was one of the rumors I heard. I would also like to say that not everyone in Mindanao is Muslim, and being Muslim doesn't mean being dangerous. I hope people will stop connecting those two together. Again, Mindanao is one big island. Just be cautious of your surroundings and other countries' cultures.

Yep , wear slippah, shorts and shirts. Depending on where you go, wear as hideous as you can without getting denied entry to establishments (like malls). Wear crossbody bag. Dont put cash visibly, at your back pocket or front pocket. Get a jacket that has inner pocket and there you wallet. When you walk and somebody acting touchy, shout if you are at crowded area or just run. One thing to avoid this is just don't go to slum areas, follow a family with kids (usually they are willing to help).

My dad is German and is exactly the person Aba described who moved to the Philippines, met my mom, ingratiated into the culture, and wanted to be there. There’s a saying that the most beautiful islands and beaches are in the southern most places as Mindanao really is untouched. This in mind, he knew all his life to never set foot in Mindanao as he will just look like a giant target. Hell, I move and act like a Filipino all my life but even I haven’t set foot there as being half German makes me already look foreign to everyone there. Hearing news like this just saddens me as I believe my country truly is worth visiting as Thailand, Vietnam, or Indonesia. But even if it’s obvious that the guy was being irresponsible, this will leave people rather wanting to be safe than sorry and avoid the Philippines

@yazajag21 сағат бұрын
@PHlophe he is literally talking about the one dangerous area and not setting foot there, nowhere did I read a damsel in distress syndrome in his tone, he was saying that because his father is German he knew not to step foot in Mindanao at all especially because the man's father clearly isn't Filipino and he's mixed but doesn't go there either his whole life even though he was born there and looks somewhat mixed. He didn't say there weren't other mixed Filipino people living there. And he is saying now this story about the reckless youtuber could have some foreigners maybe be a little paranoid about the Phillipines in general rather than just visiting and staying out of that area. Idk how you perceived any kind of negative tone or damsel in distress syndrome from the comment written. He is basically saying the same exact thing this video and Aba was saying but from direct experience and you explained the same situation as his.

Money lending, even in the safer areas in the Philippines, is a dangerous business. We've heard of lenders getting offed by someone who borrowed from them. We've heard of borrowers getting offed because they couldn't pay what they owed. Private lenders (maybe not like this guy, I'm not familiar with him), lend money but with ridiculous interest rates (not unlike banks but worse). Ironically, there's money to be made in poverty and desperation - it's incredibly sad. Kidnap for ransom groups are a whole 'nother level. It's been months since he was abducted, I'm fearing for the worst. Hopefully I'm wrong and he'll survive and learn a big lesson from all this.

Love you both and have been a huge fan for years now! I want to lovingly point out something to Aba: I’ve noticed that you tend to have a deep bias toward people who are deemed financially fortunate. It seems that you often become more compassionate toward these same people once you discover that they are struggling financially or aren't as financially powerful as you initially thought. Example from the "I'm dating a broke man" videos Do you think this could stem from your upbringing, perhaps tied to a fear or reverence for those in poverty? This isn’t to say your takes are wrong at all-just an observation I’ve made. I genuinely believe you are an incredibly empathetic person, especially once you perceive someone to be at a financial disadvantage. There’s no right or wrong in this, just something to reflect on. 😅 My only concern is that, as a society, we tend to dehumanize people based on financial status, reserving our compassion for those we consider underprivileged rather than extending grace and empathy to humanity as a whole. I do admire that you are very logical in most cases, but I’ve noticed instances where you seem much more compassionate and give more benefit of the doubt when financial dynamics shift. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this!

Real quick, as someone who's married to a Filipino, and a US combat vent, it is common knowledge for anyone aware of travel in the Philippines that the Southern province of Mindanao is not to be fucked with. There are cities, like General Santos, in the South, that are completely safe. But almost everyone will warn you about certain areas of extremists, sect members, and child soldiers. Shit, even upon booking a flight, you receive an email or letter from the State department with Express warning of traveling throughout the southern region; and should you go down there, you might be on your own. Yikes, that was one sad story and it barely strike a dent in the Indian's rape bubble. I don't want to say it's their fault but it could've been avoided if they just trust that stereotype for once and have it checked with Mr Google. After that the incident where the dr was killed is so sad and heartbreaking😢

Also, western travellers have this projection of SEA people being all happy and docile and polite and go there with an invisible armour of something in their head. They don't see them as people who are capable of self interest and doing bad things. They take it too granted because they see them as below them. Might sound like I am reaching, then watch the vid fr.
@Axiomatic75Күн бұрын
As someone who has been living in SEA for over 15 years, if you don't act stupid and avoid dodgy areas/people it is very safe here, safer than many (most?) places in the West. But if you play stupid games here, don't be surprised to win stupid prices.

nayanjeen, the docile and polite part is the filter white europeans apply to asian . they apply a whoooole different filter to Black people in african nations. and latino americans they too have a very specific filter applied to them
@DaMuss-e2wКүн бұрын
@@PHlophe White Europeans also have a filter applied to them in many places and its not flattering lol, its really funny though how so many are either oblivious to it, or outraged, especially the ones who are outraged but they do the same thing even worse to other groups. Some really do walk around though with main character syndromes and literally see Local people as NPCs in their own scripted video game or something.

As a Filipino, when I found out about this awhile back I was like "good." Moved to the US when I was 2 my family never been back. Sure it's beautiful its also hella dangerous. Ive heard so many stories from my parents no one should ever go until there's major change - which wont happen because they're so corrupt through and through
@CaiminhoКүн бұрын
You never know who's watching you. Remember about a decade back, a couple went bicycling around the world to show the world isn't as bad as it seems. Then they got ran over and killed by the Taliban when they tried to go through Afghanistan around the end of the war? This reminds me of this. I hope he is returned unharmed tho.

So it was an accident or deliberate? I mean there is terrible driving in a lot of countries and poor roads, I hate narrow windy mountain roads in poor conditions with crazy drivers.

Even the local Filipinos would know if it's a dangerous area they wouldn't go there so how is this American guy an exception? Unfortunately, it happened but a little paying attention to your surroundings wouldn't hurt.

I don’t know whether to chalk this up to ignorance or arrogance (maybe both?) but it’s really difficult for me to feel difficult for this guy. Clout is one hell of a drug.

I think it's both. Ignorance because he doesn't the know muslim filipino culture. And arrogance because he feels like he's the king there because of his skin tone and american dollars.

I remember being LIVID with my husband when we traveled to Romania . He was counting money in the street, AT NIGHT, in a HIGHLY populated nightlife area and I went off! He grew up in a suburban lifestyle and I grew up a bit rougher , so I’m more street smart. He thought I was being dramatic but, came to see my side of things after we argued about it . But yeah, people should more aware of their surroundings and be more cautious when you aren’t familiar with the area.

You guys are both 1000% right this is exactly like Preach said with the guy on the mission to spread the word of God to those villagers. Everyone told him not to go &most of the locals wouldn't go near the island but he eventually found someone to take him there &the guy ended up dead. Same with this guy in the Philippines he knew he was in a dangerous hood, once you got a wife don't you move her out of the ghetto?? Just drive down there a few times a week a film a bunch of content &hire lots of security when you do go. When America tells its citizens not to go somewhere &people do &are kidnapped or killed I can't feel bad for those people; it's their fault. They knew the risks &did it anyways, so the guy has no one to blame but himself

I ended up travelling with a whole family alongside me because they wanted to protect the white "Joe" with numbers, and I'm pretty sure the father - as a military guy - was armed as well. Certain areas we rode through I was told to keep my head down in the car too. The muslim areas really are bonkers..
