Adam, a machinist and KZbinr from the channel Abom79, sent us this pair of Thorogood Wellington boots last year. As a machinist, he's on his feet all day, so he wears these boots out very quickly. The first time he sent them to us, we COMPLETELY redid this pair of boots. Now, this pair of Thorogood boots is back for another restoration.

Really? To me this doesn‘t speak at all for expensive boots and the cobbling business. These boots are about $250, the complete overhaul which was probably a few hundred bucks and only 6 months later they need a complete resole for „about $100 at a local cobbler“. I don‘t know what he does with these boots but even my cheap boots last around 2 years and I can buy a whole lot of cheap boots for the money he‘s invested in these.

This type of sole is comfortable, but they do not last very long. I still wear them. My shoe / saddle maker sees mine every year. I like the moc toe 8" boots. You like what you like. After 3 or 4 soles, the rest of the boot is shot and I get a new pair. I keep two pair going. Switch out. Let them dry out.

Great Job! I never thought I'd ever enjoy watching someone work on shoes, but you guys do a great job with your videos and you make it interesting. I've watched most of your videos over the past week and I've enjoyed every one. I've never been someone that takes very good care of their shoes, mostly just wear them out and buy new ones. You've inspired me to try and take a bit better care of my footwear. I bought some saddle soap and conditioner, which worked great on a few pair of old boots. I find it's quite fun and relaxing cleaning shoes, especially when they come out looking 10X better than they did before. Thanks Guys.

I just resoled my own boots this way, it's easy to do. The grinding the edge was hardest part, used a bench grinder.

I like that you guys have a vent hood for the contact cement glue-up. I wish more hobbyist leatherworkers would smarten up to the risks of using a toluene-based contact cement. That said, it is the strongest.

Big guys like Adam and myself will totally destroy a set of boots in metal working shop. You find a sole that will hold up and you can't stand to wear them all day. It's like walking on rocks. Why do we repair ours boots??? Evidently you've never had to break in a pair of really thick leather work boots. Once they fit your feet you don't want to start over.

I had the same thoughts in mind. There must be more durable soles than this particular Vibram sole, but that would likely mean much more dense and hard rubber, rendering the boots much less comfortable. The repair definitely makes sense in this case!

greasydot, I agree sir. I am not a big guy. 5' 7", but more fire plug than man. I lift weights and bike a lot. I also work in my shop and build golf clubs and do repairs. I am on my feet. Prior to this retirement job, I was in the infantry in the Army 28 years. The soft soles are MANDATORY or I will be laid up. I have had 2 back surgeries. I have chronic pain. The harder the sole, the less time I can wear the shoe or boot. Around the house I have some slip on Sketchers. The soles are super squishy. If you have back, knee, foot problems you WILL search for soft soles. Comfort is the number one factor to me.

The way you did these last time means they should be able to have this done for as long as the uppers last since there's virtually no wear on the midsole and welt if it's just peeling off and gluing on a new sole each time. It seems like if one wants a sole like this, having them re-worked like this is well worth it. Not everyone calling themselves a cobbler could do that first re-work as well as you did, but any of them should sure be able to handle resoling them now.

I got a pair of used cordovan Alden loafers that were for sale out of a pick up truck. They are in good condition but I will save for a resole, the price was $4; the best four dollars I ever spent in my life.🤣👍

Those Christy soles look nice and spongy to walk on if you are on your feet all day but they obviously wear down fairly quickly. I realize Adam is kind of a big guy so that might have something to do with the soles wearing down prematurely as well . The uppers of these boots still look great which speaks volumes of the quality of the leather of Thorodood boots. It has to be nice for you guys to get the occasional easy peasy repairs once in awhile. BTW still curious about the reason or purpose for the holes on the inside of the soles . The sound at the end would be improved by adding some sound dampening. It is the sound reflecting off a close, hard surface that makes it sound like you are recording inside a tank. Aim for a neutral sound. You can even hang some towels overhead out of camera or to the side for a quick fix. I'm not surprised that the softer sole only lasted this long, Abom79 is not a small person and his shop floor is raw concrete. Yes softer soles wear faster but hopefully it saves some wear and tear on his body as knee replacement is not cheap!

Seems the compound in vibram sole is soft seven months is pretty short time for a sole to last. When I was in the Navy our flight deck boots lasted at least year working up on thr flight deck walking on non-skid.

Thanks! Yeah, the Vibram Christy soles tend to wear relatively quickly. They’re quite comfortable, but they wear fast on concrete, etc., especially if you’re wearing them a lot every week…like the owner of these. Something like the Vibram Montagna wouldn’t be as soft but would last much longer.

I wore my Doc Martin boots(Romeo style)(slip on)everyday for the last 2 years. In the 1st 7 months, my sole wore smooth of any and all texture for grip/non slip.(walk often to work and if alsonrelevant im a chef so i stand in grease a lot)Now the sole is split on 1 but the uppers on both have a great patina. I know the construction is proprietary but could yall achieve a repair on this style?

Because they are like walking on pillows. If you’re in concrete all day, this is the only sole to use. I get about a year and a half out of ,one but I’m 1/3rd the size of Adam. These are some of the softest soles you can buy. Rock hard soles on concrete and hard surfaces make you back and joints hurt.

Hey guys. Love your content! Marine Corps vet and have been a paramedic for 10 yrs now. Most my work partners including my wife who's also a paramedic wear thoroughgood 8in side zip jump boots. We love them as far as ems work goes. Fast break in and super comfortable and durable, but the soles only last about 2 years max. The unfortunate side is that the rest of the boot is in great shape because we clean, maintain, and polish our boots, but that model is not the U.S. made thorogood. Can these boots still be re soled? We all have 2 to 3 pairs at home that we just use as sh*t kickers. The boots themselves are in good shape as far as the uppers just the sole is worn out so we buy a new pair every 2 years

Hi, thanks for your service and thanks for your work! I work for a fire and EMS program at a college and I'm familiar with those boots! So, those can absolutely be re-soled. The challenge is, they are $150 boots and the first time you'd re-sole them, you'd pay at least $250 for the overhaul for the first job, just like the first job on the boots in this video: replace the rubber welt with a leather welt, add a leather mid-sole, and possibly add/replace cork or leather filler between those. Also, for the thick lug sole those have, there's a possibility they can't just be glued on like the wedge-style soles in this video, so would need to be sewn and/or screwed into the boot, but I would defer to a cobbler on that. I say 2 years for a $150 boot is awesome. I imagine you could buy something like a Nick's or White's model and it might last longer, but you'd pay $350-$550 in that case. Anyway, just my two cents. Be well.

My boots always wear through the back heel on the interior no matter what brand and i cant find quality inserts for the interior of the boot without it disintegrating after about 30 days do cobblers have a way to repair this kind of things and what would a quality shoe insert for foot bedding be?
