I’ve been in construction in Ohio for nearly 20 years, with iron working and concrete finishing being my two main trades. I’ve been wearing mock toes for the last 10 years, and I can tell you that it doesn’t matter which boots you buy, concrete and concrete dust will limit you to 12-18 months of wear before the uppers are shot. Regardless of care. That said, the Thorogood’s are consistently the most comfortable. For a true work boot, the Thorogood 6” round toe composite toe wedge sole are hands down my favorite, and the best work boots I’ve ever owned. Of course, they stopped making them though. I live in west Michigan and wear these for work (truck driving,) yard work, and some of my hiking. They get year round wear, even in snow, and the welts still look perfect. No cracking or loosening. I keep shoe trees in them when not on my feet, give them Wednesdays off to rest, and saddle soap and reapply Bick 4 every couple of months in the cold seasons, and a little less in the warm. I expect them to last at least another sole.

3rd time is a charm! I'm a union drywall finisher & own a pair of these Thorogoods, needed a steel toe option, and subjected them to a ton of abuse, between work, hiking, and wearing them casually. Out of the box they were so comfortable, especially when compared to my casual boot, my Red Wing 875's. After 2 years it's time for another pair, the spackle is brutal to leather even if conditioned regularly. Where the crimped part of the toe box meets and runs under the section that has the eyelets, a little crack formed, allowing some water to get in, but the Welt seems to be fine. I love how these are much easier to slip on over the Red Wings, the speed hooks and loop make a big difference. Thinking of trying 8" Red Wing 877's or US Made Carolina 8" Moc Toes next! Love your videos and this Moctober Installment, keep up the good work brother!

Don’t buy Carolina’s Moc. The protective layer of steel toe section wore out on mine in less than three months. The steel toe rubs against my pinky toe which is the worst feeling in the world. I've had a few pairs of T-Good boots (steel toe, waterproof, not wedge soles) but I always suffer from the ones I like being discontinued, and the replacements not being what I am looking for. My favorites were a side zip, and the inserts were about 3 times thicker than the norm, so getting them was an issue, and then the soles were worn to the point of needing replacing, but I then had caustic soda spill onto them, and they did not survive that. Oddly enough the second pair suffered the same sort of death but with both acid, then a few weeks later caustic spilling onto the leather and causing them to tear at the thinned out portions. Chemical work is rough on boots. Had them come unglued, eaten away, and the waterproofing layers made ineffective (surfactants ruin Goretex and the like).

@billthebeerbeaconscott88602 жыл бұрын
Having both for the past year I can tell you they're entirely different boots. The Thursday's are strictly for fashion whereas I wear my Thorogood's mainly for work. I've got about 2 million steps in the past 11 months with the steel toe Thorogood's and it's about time for replacement. The leather has developed some deep cracking despite cleaning and conditioning them at least every other week. I think the main culprit is the fact my feet/ankles sweat a lot... and despite drying these on a PEET dryer after work, sweat really does a number on leather. In comparison, I probably only have 100k steps in my Thursday Captains and they're just barely broken in. I wear these strictly for casual purposes and they get rather uncomfortably tight when my feet swell up after about 6 hours of wear, regardless of how many steps I've taken. They feel more like wearing a formal shoe with a very hard sole. I still love them but am looking forward to when I can really put em through their paces

Edit 2: about a month and a half in now and they're still pretty great. Insoles are holding up great, leather is doing fine despite its softness. My only real complaint so far is that the laces could be better. They're not falling apart yet, which is good, but when I compare them to the laces on my Red Wing 606 boots, there's a distinct difference in feel. I'm betting these laces will die long before the rest of this boot will. That said, they still look pretty great when I cleaned them up the other day and conditioned the leather.

My thorogood moc toes are the most durable boot I've ever worn period. This Christmas will be 3 years in them. For the first 18 months I wore them daily for 10-12 hrs in a machine shop on concrete floors with weekends spent doing house reno work. They held up great and extremely comfortable. Id recommend getting the red insoles thorogood sells instead of the ones that come with the boot. All in all I got my moneys worth and they earned a lifetime buyer. The only issues I had was the cotton toe lining tearing over time and coming out.

I've got the Thoroughgood american heritage round toe boots, same construction as the moc toe just different look. I've been wearing them almost every single day for over a year. Mud, rain, snow (not recommended, poor traction on sick conditions!), concrete, saw dust, tool oil, gun oil, paint, floor finish, blood, you name it. No signs of cracking, splitting, or tearing. I really appreciated this video, being able to see how my boots are made. I think your final assessment is correct, maybe they're not highest quality, but certainly good and worth their price. I'd guess I'll get another 10 months out of the soles, and years more before I wear out the rest of it.

Thoroughgoods are the first mocs I got, they are very comfortable and broke it very well. I got the safety toe and after a few days in the wear on my pinky toe went away and they feel like sneakers now.

Good review, I’ve been learning a lot from this video series seems like these are pretty decent boots but looks like I can see why people still prefer the red wings over others. Glad I skipped buying the danners last time they were on my list for a while but looks like I’ll pass.

Can you replace the plastic welt with a leather welt and can you replace the sole with a more aggressive snow for snow weather?

I bought a pair of these about a month ago. After about two weeks of wear, they were a lot more comfortable than when I first wore them. I work in an auto assembly plant and I am on my feet for 8-10.5 hours a day. I did put a different insert for a little better arch support.

Great video, a little uncomfortable every time I see those boots heading for the saw as they're pretty hard to get hold of in the 🇬🇧 UK. Great information though.

I am on my 3rd pair of these boots. I wear them everyday for work. Love them as they are very comfortable from the start. I had the first pair resoled and when those soles wore out I bought a new pair. The stitching on the heel of my 2nd pair broke loose so when the soles wore out on that pair I just bought a new boots instead of resoling. I am about a year into my 3rd pair and the stitching on the heel of these are coming apart the same as my 2nd pair. Love the boot except for the heel stitching coming apart. Just watched your White Moc Toe review and am thinking about giving those a try for my next boot purchase.

My friend has had this boot exact boot for over a decade and he let me look em over today because I'm thinking of getting some. You are exactly right. The welt is cracked where the toe bends. But the rest of the boot has held up amazingly well for soo much use. Thinking it's worth the money though if I get 10 years out of em...

Can you do a wear test on the different outsoles of these boots by putting them on a sander and timing it? That be really cool for the finale. Also please do the Alden Indy boot. Love the vids 👍

Kinda what I'm wondering I got the wedge sole and I'm out and about on construction sites so now I'm kinda worried about that sole. Maybe I should have gotten the heel version.

Ive had that boot for two + years never cleaned or conditioned them. I do remodel in Corvallis Oregon so the see a lot of rain as well as stepping on nails in such during deconstruction . I also wear them in the finish stages of a job because the soft sole is easy on new floors. It would be cool if you let me send you them and you could do a video looking at all the wear and how me conditioning and cleaning them would have helped.

Hi, I wore a pair of these for a year or so, I initially thought they were better than the Red Wings but they just didnt last; the structure at the heel counter and toe cap failed and made them unwearable. The Red Wings will be coming up for their second resole soon and are still great. The thorogoods are a good tool boot, comfortable from day 1 but wont be around for a resole.

I've had two pair of their shoes. One an 8" tactical boot, the other a moc toe shoe that were the oxford type version of this boot. Both were grossly over sized, and both needed different insoles and thick socks to use. The moc toe christy style sole was garbage on concrete. I got 6 months out of them before the sole was so worn, it was next to useless. I leveled the sole, and hand cut tread into what was left. I got a few more months out of them after, but by the time I was at the 9 month or so. Even the upper was so tired, they weren't worth recrafting.
@JohnEZang4 жыл бұрын
And that’s the biggest factor here. They’re simply not worthy of a resole so you’re essentially getting a boot you toss after you’ve worn through the soles.

Im on my 11th pair of thorogoods over the last 15yrs. I havent had any trouble with the welts breaking or cracking. The soles also last longer than the red wings. I will say tho that thorogood leather quality has dipped over the yrs. their leather used to be tougher. Not quite redwing tough but tougher than it is now. But i wear thorogoods for work and redwings for casual. I highly recommend them

I personally have a pair of boots from their 1892 collection and I think the brand is pretty underated by a lot of people. Definitely a brand to consider getting something from if you have an issue with your boots being too stiff or hard or just prefer something a bit more flexible and cushioned.

Meant to also mention...I have a pair of Thorogood moctoe’s and I like them, but I had a different experience with the insert. I found them uncomfortable under the heel-I guess it was that different density portion. Not a big deal. As you said, easily changed. I swapped out for a different insole and it was fine. Jury’s still out for me on the leather. I haven’t made up my mind whether I like the softer leather or not. You’re right, break in was super easy. Also! I just assumed the triple stitch line was decorative. Never occurred to me that it’d be for reinforcement against stretch. Decorative stitching always bothers me so I’m glad to know it has purpose. Thanks.

I have the thorogood roofers boot. No cracking in three years. Glue for the wedge sole is starting to give up a little along the edges of the sole. But still holding. Great boots. I like them better than my redwings.

My first pair of thorogoods were amazing. Like you said almost no break in, but we’re very durable. After a year or more, I bought a second pair and they absolutely destroyed my feet. I’m a commercial driver and it was agony moving around all day. I bought some redwings on the fly and they were fine, but I finally sent out the original pair for a resole and they’re back in the rotation. Still good for work and getting beat up on the Harley.

I've had 3 pairs of thorogoods for work boots and currently have a 4th pair (first soft toe) on the way for casual boots . First pair I beat to hell and wore down in every way possible with no cracks on the welt. Second pair was still alive but not the best so I replaced them and dyed them black as they don't make the round toe wedge sole in black and they have one crack in the welt but they lasted me 2 years on the job as a commercial electrician. Pair 3 I'm trying to care for more and regularly cleaning and conditioning and look practically new still 4 months in.

So I’ve had 5 pairs of these boots. The liner in the toe wears out very fast for me. I’m a farmer during the day and a heavy duty diesel mechanic at night. I where my boots for 16 plus hours a day. I get about year out of these boots. And yes the cold does Seem to crack the piece above the sole. Overall very good boots. I wish the liner was all leather. Good video

I have that pair I bought at Hardins in Kenova Wv. for $159.00, they are very comfortable, but your right, they do stretch and they are terrible when you wear them in the woods. There is no support at all as your foot will slip sideways when on a hilly ground and they are slick on leaves.
@spikelove95334 жыл бұрын
I've used them for over a decade I haven't had any issues with the welt failing and I've worked in all kinds of weather.I really like the stay dry version. The installation is just enough to keep your feet warm in the winter but not make your feet hot in the summer so a great all year or every season boot.

I finally wore a hole through the toe of mine after 7 years. Your durability concerns all occured on my boots - rubber welt cracked in many places, the fabric toe tore up and had to be ripped out pretty early on. Thinking of trying red wing this time. 6" instead of 8".

What I find crazy is thorogood actually goes through any and all videos of their products and comments. I think that is really great. Shows they truly care about what people are saying about them. I can’t seem to find a boot that won’t fall apart so I’m waiting for mine to ship. If these don’t work, I’m gonna have to go full custom Nicks. Keeping my fingers crossed!

I looked at alot of work boots and I wanted a boot made in America lock stock and barrel. They definitely fit the bill. I paid about $235 for them and I waterproofed them myself even though they are oiled from the factory. There is a bit of something that has pulled away from the inside and it kinda rubs on the end of my big left toe. I think I just need to keep my toenails trimmed. I have osteoarthritis in my knees and my left knee is grinding bone on bone. I currently have two different aftermarket gel insoles in them because of the knees and I work in a factory on a concrete floor. I've had them for about three years now and still like them alot. I will probably see about getting them resoled in the future. I would buy another pair after they finally wear out.

I was really excited to see this video. But then realized a few minutes in that my Thorogood boots are 15 years old back when they used Vibram soles and my boots are nothing like these. On mine the welt is leather and the material on the inside of the toe box is leather. So I guess when these soles are shot ill be getting mine resoled. I guess what I'm saying is thank you for the information cause I was going to buy a new pair. But not now.

Just had a 5 year old pair of thorogoods re-soled. The insole is looking a bit worse for wear around the heel, but I don’t even notice that. Wore the old soles all the way through from use and hopefully I’ll get another life with the new soles.

I work in a steel yard and I wear the 8" moc toe thorogoods. My first pair lasted a year only because the sole is worn out. I might get them re-soled because the leather is still in great shape. I'm in month 11 in the 2nd pair and they are still in great shape. Im going to get a third pair soon since my boss buys them for me but I'm going to continue in my current pair until they also need to be re-soled.
