To those in the comments that wonder how this fusion would work the way it did: there is a conclusion I came to in order to show just that. Spoilers to "A Single Pale Rose," and other plot points in the series, obviously! Warning: very, VERY long comment ahead. *First theory:* A rainbow quartz could be a combination between a diamond and a pearl rather than a rose quartz and a pearl. However, this would create an inconsistency since smoky quartz is officially a combination of a rose quartz and an amethyst. So this can't be the case. *Second theory:* Maybe rainbow and smoky are actually not the actual names of those particular gems, and they are both actually diamond fusions. There's no evidence to suggest this, however, so that shouldn't be assumed to be the case. *Conclusion:* What I noticed about Pink Diamond is that she could keep the form of a rose quartz for a very long time. After all, she had to have hidden her true form, from everyone in the rebellion, as leader, at all times for +5,000 years. So what I think is that diamonds, as "flawless beings," are able to transform into another being, an even greater power than just shapeshifting indefinitely. This seems to be the most logical conclusion. Should this theory be right, not only would Pink be able to become Rose, but Rose would be able to become human. There's no explanation on how the reproduction of a gem and a human would work, yet it did anyway. Rose said it herself that she was going to become half of Steven in the video she made for him. Theoretically, the only thing that would need to be done is turn a gem's body's light matter into organic matter. Of course Rose wouldn't have completely turned into a human, because Steven still needed a gem to exist. He couldn't be a full human since Rose was not. Remember Ronaldo's theory about the diamond authority and how it wanted to hollow out the Earth? Yeah, that actually happened. Ronaldo is basically the storywriters' biggest way of giving foreshadowing about many things that would happen in the series. As another example, in "Can't Go Back" he said to Steven "YOU HAVE A MOON BASE?!" "One: Why do you have a moon base? Two: Take me to your moon base." Kudos if you've made it this far, by the way! Ronaldo insisted multiple times that the moon base, which belonged to Pink Diamond, was actually owned by Steven. And he was technically right. Back on topic; In the very same line of dialogue where he talks about the authority, he said that the diamonds could "assume any form." That could be referring to shapeshifting, but we were already well aware of this concept at the time, as demonstrated by "Cat Fingers" and most other early episodes that involved Amethyst in some way. So transformation is not out of the question at this point. I also speculate that Steven's powers are not those of a rose quartz, but rather the powers of Pink Diamond. That's a theory for another time though. Did I miss anything that could change, debunk, or add on to my theory in any way? I know that this is pretty loose, but I haven't done any intense research on this. Also, in case you forgot, this was originally meant to make sense of Rainbow Quartz's existence. Wow I just spent half an hour typing a 10 paragraph theory about a popular kid's show in the comment section of a KZbin video at 10:00 at night. I have no life.

Actully fusion has no rules when it comes to cross gem fusion！ That’s what makes fusion great it’s a combination of the fuses personalities. The fusions name themselves meaning that they aren’t a specific gem. Rebecca sugar confirmed this herself. I lost the link to her statement but it does give a huge key to why homeworld dislikes fusions. It’s becuase fusion isn’t conistant, they can choose their forms and become something their parts couldn’t have done on their own.

Punny, not Funny A lot of people freak out about how Rose kept that form for so long BUT if she was maintaining a smaller body than her diamond body wouldn't that mean she was using less energy? The show has mentioned a few times that stretching or making the body bigger uses more energy but has never said anything about becoming smaller. Like when Steven was using more energy to stretch he became a baby again. Maybe because that form, a smaller form, used less energy so he could rebuild his energy back up. Also the thing about her powers being different from a Rose Quartz makes sense as Eyeball says that there were rumours that Rose could heal her allies, why would they be rumours if all Rose Quartzs could do it? People would know.

I'm pretty sure that fusions name themselves. Not every fusion between a Ruby and a Sapphire, for example, would decide that they wanted to be called Garnet. So, since both gems that make up Rainbow Quartz are in on the secret, they had no reason to call themselves what they actually are (i.e. Rainbow Diamond). Makes me wonder if Rose ever fused with anyone besides Pearl. Fusions can keep secrets from their participants (as seen with Sardonyx), but I don't know if the other gem(s) would feel that something was off; the power level of the fusion would be insane because one of the gems is a Diamond. Ok, so the leading theory about Pink Diamond shapeshifting into Rose is that she simply reformed into Rose after poofing. However, she must also be very good at shapeshifting to hold her Rose form for long enough to participate on the rebel side of the war. I'd say she could shapeshift for days straight and barely break a sweat. It's possible that she could have shapeshifted a womb and held it for 9 months, or she could have asked Pearl to poof her again and reformed with a womb. Also, Steven's powers are his mother's powers, and his powers are pretty OP so I'd say they belong to Pink Diamond. No other gem is known to have healing powers like that, and her shield can block pretty much anything, even a combination attack from 3 Diamonds. Since they are unique, you'd think somebody would notice that Pink Diamond could also do those things, so I'm fairly sure that she exclusively used them in her Rose form. It would be out of line for her to use her powers as Pink Diamond anyway; Diamonds let other gems do their fighting for them.
