Personally, I want more people that have a left hand (that they actually use) to design knives. It is sort of a blessing in disguise in that the market has limited offerings, thereby keeping my spending on knives somewhat in check.
@GBall_Vision29 күн бұрын
even left handers who do design often design for right hand, mainly because of a lot of right handed people but also left handers who still use and carry their knives right handed. we have seen an increase in left hand models i think itll continue going up

I think a lot of people are missing the other side's point. A good knife design is a good knife design - it shouldn't matter who designed it if it''s a good knife. HOWEVER, name one KZbinr's knife that is truly innovative, groundbreaking, or beautiful... Just one... Every KZbinr knife I've seen is either a painfully regurgitated version of the same knife that gets released 100 times a year, or something that looks like it was drawn up by a four year old... AND - the KZbinrs who generally get approached about designing a knife are the ones with the most views - so it becomes a popularity contest. I don't know about the rest of you, but I'd trust a knife designed by the nerdy kid no one talks to who spent his whole life growing up around knives than one designed by the class president who only got into them a couple of years ago. Not naming names... but it's pretty easy to figure out. I've been involved in the knife industry for over 20 years and I can almost guarantee that most of you have knives designed by me in their collections. I never cared for recognition or fame - I did my job. Do I think that someone who first got into the hobby like 3 years ago can design a good knife? SURE! But... it's unlikely... Hate on me all you want and lie to yourself all that you want... but I haven't seen a KZbinr designed knife that I would pay more than $20 for, and most I wouldn't even pay that for, regardless of OEM or materials used.
@LastBastian28 күн бұрын
No offense, but you seem really bitter. Anyone can design and sell a knife. If you don't like it, don't buy it. You are coming off here as jealous of guys for being more well known than you. That's just petty.
@cliffb898028 күн бұрын
@@LastBastian Just stating my opinion. If you really read my post, you'd know that I have nothing against KZbinrs designing knives - if they designed good ones. They don't. There's more to designing a knife than just picking shapes, a lock, and materials. Would you drive a car designed by someone who's only experience is driving and reviewing cars? Especially if they've only been doing it for 3-4 years on a KZbin channel? I'm not bitter. I'm rich. I don't have to work - I was able to retire at 45. I'm done designing knives. It was a job that I took seriously. As anyone who's getting paid should take their job. Before becoming a designer, I apprenticed under some of the greatest and most well known custom makers in the history of the hobby. I wet my feet by actually learning how to make knives from scratch - just sheets of titanium, steel, G-10, CF, Micarta, etc - a belt grinder, lathe, drill press and my hands. On a daily basis I saw knives that came back for service- I had to fix them, and I don't mean unscrewing the handle scales and playing with the bits inside - I mean actual machine work requiring extreme precision. I know tricks that would spin your head. I know what works and doesn't work. I have experience that no one who just reviews or "handles" knives all the time could ever have. I've tuned and repaired $3000 custom folders... and besides, I'm not just picking on KZbinrs - over half of these people who design knives these days suck - that's why we keep getting the same sh!t over and over again. Name one innovative or truly awesome knife designed by a KZbinr... Everything I've seen looks super generic or too ugly for a gas station. Go ahead, I'm waiting.
@LastBastian27 күн бұрын
@@cliffb8980 You still come off as a little worked up and defensive here. I don't really follow KZbinrs or their knife designs that closely, but I would genuinely love to see some of *your* truly awesome and innovative knives. Could you list some please?
@stevenw339327 күн бұрын
@@LastBastian I'm picking up what Cliffb8980 is putting down. For example, this happened with photography; it became super accessible, the bar was lowered, and now it's diluted by so much work without even a hint of artistry or craftsmanship. So yeah, the same thing has happened with knife making. I have to really hunt to find a knife that's worth my time.
@LastBastian27 күн бұрын
@@stevenw3393 Maybe enjoy the hunt then, and let everyone else enjoy their passion for knives however they want to. More people making and designing knives, only leads to more options and more innovations. Simply don't buy something if it's not your thing.

I think anyone should be able to design knives, that being said that does not mean they are good. Our community has become toxic influence as opposed to review and supporting the community. To clarify there are a lot of similar knives, why not compare similar older knives to the new hotness, instead of trying to sell the latest and greatest. Oh yeah free knives for influencing.

I dont think influencers and reviewers coming out with their own product is a problem in itself, but it does become a problem when they dont disclose its their product and/or review their own stuff. I also think they should be abit careful with disclosing how much they were involved with it, theres alot of youtuber stuff out there thats basically just dropshipping an existing product with their name on it. But as long as its actually honest and transparent, I have no problems with it.

I divide design into two parts. First the visual appeal and more important the engineering and human interface or Ergos. Engineering can be further divided into the mechanics or how the detent lock up and other parts work and all the human interface components. Like hole placement use, studs flippers jumping hand placement, blade attitude and so much more. Whoever can integrate all the elements should be designers.
