I've used the spring from a pen for a Manix before. The tension in that case wasn't exactly the same, but it totally worked out. The Manix was my first "favorite" knife. I guess I've kinda moved on since, but it will always have a sweet spot in my heart. And I do go back to it from time to time when I want to remember the day I realized I love this stuff.

I currently work 8 minutes from my house for a overnight shift at a major grocery chain... so no get home bags aside from basic vehicle supplies in my van which include some bedding for if I needed to nap and a emergency side of the road tool kit that includes Cold Steel Trench Shovel and a folding saw. (If the end of the world arrives in the dead of night while I'm at the store I'd have no issues stocking my van with food, water, and supplies, getting extra gas across the street, and heading home.) Lol...😂 The idea of a "one and done" knife always amuses me... as if I could just choose one. I've got spare knives and EDC in my vehicle, knives with my camping supplies, knives with hurricane supplies, and the rest of my collection at the house. 😅 I'm one of those folks that always has more than one knife on him whenever he leaves the house. I'm generally carrying a "Large Folder/Small Folder" pairing and my Ti scaled Victorinox Yeoman on my person. (Not a fixed blade as its against store policy and I prefer to get paid.😂) This in addition to my EDC of a pair of flashlights (I work at night), a pocket prybar, a pen, a small pouch of medical items, a lighter, a workshop pocket sharpener (NOT A PULL THROUGH), earbuds, and some work gloves. YES I wear cargo shorts have have several pouches and organizers. I was a boyscout and like to be prepared so sue me.🤷♂️ If you forced me at gunpoint to pick a single knife it'd be a fixed blade from my collection, likely a Mora Garberg. (Not too large... not too small.) But realistically... I'd also have a Parang, Kukri, or Esee Libertariat as a "chopper/machete" and a smaller companion neck knife like a Mora Eldris. (Despite hours of youtube videos and being very well read on a variety of subjects I know I'm not a expert. I've always been taught to use the right tool for the job...so I'm generally willingly tool heavy.) 😤 unintended rant over. Sorry/not sorry.

I love my Manix, but my full TI Hinderer XM 18 3.5 get more pocket time than any of my more than 100 folders. I don't have hard use needs regularly, so my choice might be different depending on what I was doing. If I had to break down boxes every day I'd use a simple box knife. Easy to replace razor blades rather than dulling one of my knives. So I guess one and done is going to be different for everyone. And to me, that's a beautiful thing. Really enjoyed this video and your reasoning.

My answer to this question is the Sebenza. If I could only have one folder, I'd keep my Sebenza 25. Very, VERY close race though. You are correct about the Manix however. My LW S110V Manix is my go-to when I want something lightweight, water resistant and practical. In practical terms it's probably the overall best folding knife ever made. For fixed blades, my answer really depends on context, but I'd probably go with the Cold Steel Leatherneck or Recon Tanto. Leatherneck is basically an improved Kabar and the Recon Tanto has been a reliable classic for decades.

Thanks for mentioning the skinning factor, because for a lot of us, that is important. And even though the manix blade shape is not the very best for skinning, it can totally do it with no problem. The griptillian with the sheep’s foot blade, is a little better at skinning, however, I’m with you, I rather the big coil spring over those dinky omega springs, which I personally have never broken yet, but the coil spring is obviously more substantial out of the two. And I ALWAYS carry a sharpener to the hunting property, because it doesn’t matter which knife you take, once you skin out an entire deer, or especially a wild hog, your knife requires sharpening. Good video!

Great video. We are lucky to be living through a renaissance in the field of knife making. There are so many top quality knives available at reasonable prices. I am surprised that your ‘one’ EDC pocket knife would be a knife which is red loctited. The Manix is a beautiful knife, but when I chose between buying the Manix and the PM2, I chose the PM2 because a 12 year old could field strip it if needed. The Manix cannot claim that, and that was an important factor for me.

The spyderco shaman or mayby the PM2. The more I use them the more I think they are a perfect knife choice. The shaman is more desirable then the PM2 because of its slight edge in durability and all around ergonomics. The finer tip on the PM2 is the only reason why I mention it really, but that is also what makes it questionable but the weight of the shaman make them fairly even. Now your ideal mayby the ticket for a great compromise. I like my manix 2 LW in spy27 a lot.

Engagement post: I was a collector of hard users but the AD20 became my one and done. I agree that the Manix 2 is probably Spyderco's best knife overall but it didn't click with me. I tried, have two and one is in titanium scales. It's because the lock is more awkward to actuate due to having to use two fingers which lessens your grip on the knife. The AD20 fixed that with a lock that functions similarly but with one finger. I also think the AD20 is kind of a big, thick Manix 2 anyway because the scales and ergos are so similar. That's all coming from someone who enjoys an unnecessarily strong folding knife. If you don't value that I'd say go for an AD20.5 or 20S. Or Manix 2 if you just prefer Spyderco, it's still a high-end cutting tool.

I went for the Ganzo 729 model which is an PM2 clone in 440C and supposed to have 58 HRC. The reasons is because of the flat grind so it has an slicy edge and I prefer the Axis Lock over any other locks including compression lock. The compression lock of Spyderco is just an modified liner lock with its inherent flaws (wearing out by chewing through the contact faces over time). Then the leaf blade PM2 shape blade is easier to sharp than other styles and it has not as many different blade angles but one single flat grind shape. For an fixed blade a Tanto blade is the way to go. Since a knifes blade is a wear part in an end of the world scenario, I prefer to have many knives but then cheaper ones but all in decent steel like 440C at least. D2 is a no got due to rust. In an nuclear blast scenarion and aftermath you do not want to deal with rusting blades and oil the constantly (where oil will be scarce). It must be an stainless steel knife and if possible to be sharpened with anything in the field so not to hard but in an hardness of between 58 and 60 HRC. That is why I prefer to have 10 Ganzos 729 instead of 11 Spyderco. I just ordered an stainless steel fixed angle sharpener (with diamond stones) system alongside an Ganzo 729 (440C stainless and they claim 58 HRC). Where are you getting the ammo for your guns in an end of the world scenario? So you are down to your knife. Better have several Ganzo 729's.

I’ve never handled any of those knives other than the Strider SMF. I have two. The lock stick goes away. My only complaint is the detent ball. I was running my first one dry, including the ball, and was using it as a fidget. Now I’m sending it into Strider to get the detent ball replaced. My second I got in last week. I put a dab of grease on the detent to keep it all lubed up. I’ll do the same when I get the other back. From here on out, no more fidgeting my Striders, and always keeping the detent lubed. Edit: I do have a Manix 2 XL. I like it a lot. It was my first Spyderco, and never realized how nice they were. Jimping everywhere.

I know how hard it is for you to pick just one knife Jerad and I am sure that this was months or years in the making. The whole video was like a glimpse into your whole thought process on what you look for, why you eliminate a knife from contention and the occasional apology to the knife or anyone who would gave picked that knife. Informative and funny. In my current collection I think I narrowed it down to 3 knives: Spyderco Kapara, Vosteed Nightshade & Civivi Praxis. Those are the 3 knives I find myself grabbing the most. The Kapara is like a substitute chef knife and most of my cutting is in the kitchen. The Civivi Praxis is my beater knife, it can handle most anything I throw at it and at $42.50 I can just buy a new one if it did critically fail. And the Nightshade is the closest thing to a folding khukuri on the market these days. Its robust and that slant on the blade angle subtly allows it to function vastly different from any other folder. I really couldn't narrow it down further than those 3. And the fixed blade has to be a khukuri. You never know what the day will bring but with a khukuri in hand you know you will be ready for anything.

I love my fullsize griptilian, but my "one and done" folding knife is a native 5 and it's not even close for me. You are right on with cold steel. And to be completely honest, if it is an "apocalyptic" situation, I'm grabbing a native 5 and definitely fixed blade, probably a mora and a backpack hatchet if I can. I currently have some go bags setup and my hatchet would slide right in there. To be realistic, what you can accomplish with your tools will matter far more than what tools you select, so I encourage people! Get out there and use them. Build fires, shelters, stuff. And have fun!

Would have to go with an endura or stretch in k390. Code 4 or American lawman are up there too

My reate K2 has held me down for 4yrs and still going strong, also had a Horizon D that I sold and now regret!! Reate makes great knives and iv had a hinderer xm18 that was too soft, that being said all knife companies have some hit and misses but for the most part reate makes a better knife for a better price!!!!

I'm so glad you did a video like this that isn't full of Civivis and Kizers. I like all kinds of knives but we all have or want the higher end, we'll built American stuff.

People always sleep on the Manix. It’s a fabulous knife and I love it. But today, my knife is the Spartan Harsey folder.

i think as long as the Harsey has a regrind then its an awesome choice, i got a hollow grind on mine

Hmmm... I might go with a Spyderco delica - Endela - Endura depending on size preference. Of course in K390

The ultimate one and done folding knife is the Sebenza 21/31 in any blade shape you choose. Haven't even finished the video so not sure if it's the knife that Jared picked.

I’m carrying my Sage 1 Maxamet and liking it. My best one and done fixed blade is my Bark River JX6 Magnacut with orange G10 handle/toxic green liners
