Riding AMTRAK's "Empire Builder" - Chicago to Seattle

This is a rather long documentary of (one of) my trip(s) from Chicago to Seattle on the AMTRAK train called the "Empire Builder". I start with a brief trip on the Chicago area METRA commuter train, then have the Empire Builder video, and finally end with a brief trip on the Seattle area LINK commuter train to SeaTac airport. I don't spend a lot of time describing the 'train experience', or details of the "first class", "sleeper", "Superliner" car or "Roomette", since I have done that already in other videos. I only talk about those aspects when there is something not covered previously, or where this particular experience differed from what I have documented before.

At the 2:45 mark your train was approaching the Foss River Bridge. Back during WW2, the electrified Great Northern Fast Mail left the rails at that location, the headend crew and others died. The electric locomotive, GN motor #5100 was rebuilt replacing the destroyed box cab body with two steamlined FT bodies are returned to service. Of the cars in the train consist, only one was salvaged.

This video brought back a long ago memory of riding the Denver Zephry from Chicago to Denver, Colorado. I was in my early 30's on my last train trip. As a child my grandmother lived near train tracks, and always found the sound soothing to me. Now at 72 I would love to take just one more train trip, with a sleeper cabin.

@@jennylee9278 , I always take my Kindle on train trips, and read it during stretches of the route that are not so scenic. Normally, I can read easily enough, but some occasional rough stretches of track might result in enough vibration to make reading temporarily difficult.

I do sometimes take a photo of a meal and insert it into my video. Also, on some trains, the Dining Car manager asks that no video is taken inside the car, although I can still shoot video out the windows.

Boy does this video bring back fond memories of when mom and I moved to Seattle. Don't know if anyone remembers the old Milwaukee Road train that used these same tracks long ago. Mom and I rode that train to Seattle. We took the B & O to Chicago then changed to the Milwaukee Road, then on to Seattle. This video follows the same tracks, and it has brought back so many wonderful memories of that ride back in the 1940s. 😊👍 Thank you so much. This route passes the old logging town of Alpine on the west side of the pass. The town has been gone a very long time. A favorite author if min, Mary Dahime (sp?) uses Alpine as one of her mystery series sites. The route is beautiful. Think I'll start saving money for a train ride 👋👍.

I worked in the Oil Boom of the early 80's and lived South of Williston and have been to the Williston Depot. On Rt. 2 ON the Montana-North Dakota border (1:38 mins) was a bar called the "State Line Bar(?)". The bar was oriented east to west and down the middle was painted the border line and time zone line. When the bar on the North Dakota side of the line turned 2 AM (Not sure about the real time has been a long time) and when the ND State law says you can't drink anymore , you walk to the other bar in MT on the other side of the room where it is still 1AM and the booze was still flowing. It was a trip.

I actually have a lot of family that live in Williston and Dickinson, so I know that area pretty well. I live 40 minutes NW of Minneapolis, so whenever I go see family I usually take the Empire Builder from Minneapolis to Williston. It’s usually a pretty enjoyable trip.

The Trump government has reduced service to only 3 days a week. If our stupid people in the red states don't learn to wear masks and respect the virus. I doubt you will be able to make the trip. If Trump is re elected the trains will be history in April 2021. The cars are 40 years old, with no replacements ordered. Less service will result in lower ridership and higher costs. A great excuse to finally knock them off.

This was the first of your train trips I watched last Dec. 2019. I was recovering from a horrific case of pneumonia and had just gotten out of the hospital after spending 6 nights there. I was still fatigued, but I enjoyed watching this and your other train adventures from my bed at home. While I stayed home to recover, I was pleased to see other parts of the country I have never seen thanks to your great videos. I have always been interested in trains. I had previously been on the Durango-Silverton in Colorado, the Skunk train in Northern California, and the Williams, AZ, train to the Grand Canyon and back. I have never been on any Amtrak train so I was interested in the “sleeper” accommodations. Well now that I have recovered, and I am feeling much better, we now have the COVID-19 pandemic (or also known as the Corona virus). Funny since I live in Corona, CA. Our own (crown) virus. I liked when you passed through our area on one of your trips which was very familiar to me as I am a lifelong resident of Southern California (born here). I hope all this virus stuff ends soon and you can take and video more train trips. I appreciate your comments. Some of them make me giggle. I also like your narrations of trips to museums as well. I thoroughly enjoyed the video and narration. I worked the Empire Builder to Portland for about 12 trips and Seattle once. Enjoyed crossing our beautiful, scenic, spacious and sometimes stark America. Was able to identify with all the stops along your journey. Very nice presentation with all your gadgets et al. I took the same trip way back in 2004 When I lived in New York City.My girlfriend and I took the Lake Shore Limited from New York City to Chicago.Then the Empire Builder to Seattle.We took the same trains back to New York after staying in Seattle for a week.It was epic and by far the best vacation I ever had.Your videos are very entertaining and thorough.Watching them makes me want to do another epic train trip soon.

Awesome videos. I have watched everyone several times. You inspire me. I took the Zephyr , then hopped on the Lakeshore to Syracuse to see my Sister 2 years ago. On the way back I took the Lakeshore back to Chicago. Then hopped on the Empire to Portland, then the Starlight to San Jose. I live in Watsonville Cal. I used to after the Air Force travel a lot. But got complacent. You reinspired me. After my other hip replacement surgery I will have in May this year I am planning a San Jose to Denver trip to celebrate. Thank you.

BTW, I am a rabid pro AMTRAK fan. So I put up with a few problems here and there. In my own defense, I always carry a roll of duct tape, (to cover the effing vents, for starters), a can of Lysol spray, a couple of rubber wedge doorstops, uber warm clothes in the winter, a power strip for my various chargers, an immersion heater, some instant soup and coffee, a few snacks, can of Planter's Peanuts (natch!), my almost 1 quart flask of Jack Daniel's, my little hip flask of same, a pack of little cigars and my metal cigar tube so I don't have to waste a whole cigar, Laptop with GPS and Street Atlas Pro Mapping program, Tablet, Cell phone, chargers, and my 2Meter/6Meter handheld Amateur radio (works as a scanner, too), Bluetooth headphones and maybe a couple of books. Since I never go anywhere without my LED Lenser flashlight, Leatherman pocket tool kit and a spare set of eyeglasses, nitroglycerin carrier, I'm ready for anything. Big suitcase for long trips goes in the bag are downstairs, and my Union Pacific railroad grip carries a change of undies, toiletries (from the hotels, natch!), bandaids, tooth pain reliever, mouthwash, antacid and heart medicine. Comfy slippers and a flannel shirt, along with the aforementioned survivor's kit. AMTRAK trips are what you make of them.

Excellent video. In August of 2012, I took the Empire Builder from Seattle to Milwaukee, then in Milwaukee took the Hiawatha to Chicago. In Chicago, we boarded the Southwest Chef to LA and then in LA, the Coast Starlight back to Seattle, it was wonderful. It was the first time I had ever been on a train, I have been hooked ever since and hope to take another cross country train ride one of these days.

long distance trains don't make sense in a country with the geography of the U.S or of Canada for that matter. Europe is geographically smaller and densely populated which makes train travel sensible over longer distances. Commuter trains abound in major urban centres where the population density and resultant car gridlock make trains a good choice. @@josephkoncur6403

In late December of 1967 I boarded the City of Miami in Jackson, Tennessee at midnight on a Friday night riding to Chicago. We got to town about 8 the next morning and an hour or so later we got on the Pacific Northwestern bound for Tacoma, Washington. I was a soldier traveling to Ft. Lewis. This video reminds me a lot of that trip and brings back many memories. I was on the train to celebrate the New Year. As I remember, we only stopped twice. Once in Minneapolis and again somewhere else. We arrived in Tacoma Monday afternoon. The next day I reported to Ft. Lewis and signed in to the company area. When I turned around to leave the soldier on duty asked me where I was going and I told him I had a place off the fort and he informed me that I was confined to the company area because the fort was quarantined for meningitis. Interesting trip.

I have taken many Amtrak long-distance trips myself, and this video captures the best reality of what they are like ... i.e. many miles of blank scenery, often times annoying problems, and occasional interesting and unique experiences that could be had nowhere else. Wonderful video with lots of information. I have only ridden Amtrak from Sacramento CA to Denver CO. I found it very good. In Sydney Australia all the trains Interstate, regional, suburban and light Rail ( Streetcars ) come into Central Station so the walking between the modes of transport including buses and taxis is quite minimal.

These videos also gives you a better idea of what the inside of the train is like, we used to think a roomette was suitable but now feel a sleeper room is better for us. Thank you for a pleasantly narrated trip. A ride that I will personally never be able to make. So many people ruin these kinds of video trips with unnecessary noises & background chatter. But I want to thank you for a very nice trip. I do hope you get an adjustment from Amtrak. I would have made the same remarks.

In spite of the cold and resulting problems, I find this the most interesting of all this series. Out hoist is soothingly articulate and absorbing. And while I would never live there, I find open country interesting from a moving train. I have traveled twice on gthe Cal Zepher and the Cardinal.

I wish I could see your face to know who is talking. Your voice is soothing. I’ve been listening and enjoying the sounds and sights. My family is from Montana. My dad was a dispatcher. Mom was a telegrapher. My uncle an engineer. I worked for UP In Seattle back in 1969. Lots of railroad stories. I’m looking up towns while you mention the names. Thank you!!!💕

I have done this trip many times since the 1960's. I love Amtrak and trains in general. It is one of the best ways to see America.....keep trains alive.

vielen Dank. zuerst dachte ich, wow 2h45m, das ist aber viel. aber es ist absolut nicht langweilig, und gut kommentiert, sehr viel besser als manch andere Videos, bei denen diese Reise in stressigen 20-30 Minuten zusammen gefasst ist. am besten gefällt mir die Winterlandschaft im Kaskadengebirge. thanks alot, at first I thought wow 2h45m, seems a lot. but it's absolutely not boring, and well commented, so much better than some other videos where this journey is summarized in stressful 20-30 minutes. most i like the Wintercascade scenery.

I did that trip in 2016. I liked the Club and Dining cars. Had a similar "Roomette" as the presenter. The train cars, of course, are "double deck", with one wash room on the top deck and three below. There is also a fairly roomy shower on the lower deck. The trip was fairly scenic, even through the Dakota's and Montana. VERY scenic going through Western Washington but a lot of that portion of the journey is at night and early morning (on the last day). The total time was a little over 44 hours.

Thank you. Excellent work. The last time I traveled with AMTRAK I enjoyed the SW Chief from Chicago to LA with a long pause in Albuquerque to visit my factory then still in there. Later continued to LA, and then San Francisco then south to New Orleans, back to New York. Rockwell and Allen Bradley remain part of professional life. Again very good work.

2:05:40 Watching the snow covered trees in nearly impassable mountainous terrain as the train moves through is mystical! With all that had already gone wrong and the extreme cold, I really wouldn't want to get trapped in there! It looks like a scene our of a fantastic voyage movie.

I’m curious where you live in Minnesota. I live in Elk River about 40 minutes NW of Minneapolis or 30 minutes from St. Cloud. Usually take Empire Builder out of St. Cloud, but ocassionaly will do the Union Depot in Minneapolis.

A trip i took on Amtrak in a family sleeper had the same no heat problem. I'm retired Amtrak so after several hours I questioned the conductor and at a station stop we found one 480 volt connector dragging out of it connection, pointed it out to the conductor raiwho didn't hesitate but went right in and reconnected the cable the asked the engineer to retry the head end power and miracle of miracles the train powered up. R It took a few hours but the entire train came up to normal temperature.

I've ridden amtrak grand jct to Glacier via Portland. Never had any problem, comfortable and clean. Beautiful scenery! Going again this coming summer.
