Already being the owner of an upgraded Atari 400 in the early 80s, I was slightly skeptical of the Spectrum's abilities and all the fuss being made about it at school by my peers. One day, I went round my mate's who wanted to show me his new Spectrum in action. The first game he demonstrated was Atic Atac. My mind was instantly blown and I was immediately converted.

If anyone is interested the original release of Frank N Stein on the Spectrum had some programming tools left behind by the coders. I seem to recall it was a compiler. I have no idea if the version that's out there still has it but it might be worth checking out. Not a bad game either.

MERGE "" and play the tape. Stop it when it says OK 0:1, add these two lines of basic, 10 CLEAR 24749 and 35 STOP (The line 10 CLEAR 24749 is to delete the border paper and ink changing all to black so when you run the compiler you can read it) then type RUN and play the tape until the game loads (the game will not run and return to basic). Delete all the lines of the basic loader (Do not use the NEW command to do this, or reset the spectrum!) and type in a basic program. After you have typed in a basic program, type in RANDOMIZE USR 60000 and the compiler will run.

Have to say, Jet Pac is a shoe in for mine.. i was very much a computer luddite in the early 80's, until we visited my mothers friend, who's son had been given a Spectrum pretty much the day it came out (and is now a systems engineer). I was hooked, and when my own appeared under the Christmas tree (as it did for so many that year), Jet Pac was in my stocking.. along with the Pacman clone Gulpman, which i may well have to look out as well 😊

yeah it's an absolute classic alright! That's a cool story, I love hearing how people got into gaming. There was nothing like getting a cheeky game in the Christmas stocking! My dad got me into gaming. The first system I got was an Intellivision. Then a c64 a few years later. But they were at my Dad's, so I only got to play them twice a month! My mum bought my brother and I a Speccy in 1985 and it was the best Christmas ever!

@@YouveBeenGamed Yes I've been playing that Chuckie Egg game the last few days that you recommended. That a one's good! My trick is I use a MegaDrive/Genesis controller on my next and always remap the "Up to jump" action to an actual button. It makes the games much easier for me and more like a SNES/MegaDrive style game that way. Glad to see Dan Dare in the list. Loved that game, and indeed still do. Completed it back in the day, but still haven't managed it again nearly 40 years later. It's an unforgiving game to play. CHAOS! By Julian Gallop, of XCOM fame. I remember it came free on the covertape of a Speccy magazine, and my friend ran it on his ZX81 and we played it for hours, days, weeks, months in between games of Heroquest and Space Hulk. Epic wizard battles. So simple but true deathmatch battles back in the day! As far as I know, it was a Spectrum exclusive. Illusioned Golden Dragons everywhere...

@@YouveBeenGamed Yeah the man hit nothing but net for years. Chaos was a great concept, and up to 8 players on a single speccy game! Of course you all had to turn your backs while each player took their turn.... And Lazer Squad and UFO : Enemy Unknown. I think the first XCOM game was pretty much the *most* game anyone could squeeze out of three floppy disks. Infinite replayability, tech tree research, micro base management and a huge tactical combat game. The guy was a genius.

Split Personalities from Domark is an awesome arcade sliding block puzzle game that is well worth adding to the built in games. I could never complete it back in the 80s but can now. The Oracles' Cave from Doric is a fab early RPG game. I've got great memories playing it and beating it back in the day. Cookie from Ultimate was an awesome little game and was very impressive for such an early Spectrum game. Pogo is a good early clone/unofficial conversion of Q-Bert for the Spectrum and is pretty good. Hunchback 2 Quasimodo's Revenge was a great little platformer and very playable Jonah Barrington's Squash was a great game and if you liked Match Point then you'd definitely like Jonah Barrington's Squash. It's a bit of a forgotten classic in my opinion. The original Renegade is worth adding as well. That was one of the first games that I can remember that took good advantage of the 128k Spectrum by adding the shoulder throw move that wasn't in the 48k version along with the ingame music.

I use an emulator on my pc for my speccy enjoyment called Spectaculator. Its a really good emulator and very reasonable, and I can boost the clock speeds, which for some games it definitely needs.. The main reason i love it is thst it emulates the tape music when you load in tape games. Honestly, with dome gsmes, the tape music is the best part. I would of added Agent X 1 and 2. Easily the best ever music you can get for the speccy. Loving the video. Going to wstch the Amiga one after this. I loved my Amiga even more than my speccy.

A great selection you've picked. One game above all others will be Nightbreed, but I'm really getting one to try out some assembly programs I've whipped up. I owned two Spectrums back in the day and they were the 48K+ and the 128K +2 models, but sadly they both packed up all too soon. It'll be nice to have a new one, and also have the 128K mode as well. One thing I will say is that just about everyone I knew that had a spectrum also had a copy of Robocop. Dizzy was the other really popular game at the time.

First game I ever played on a zx spectrum (my older sister had a machine & she was 15 years older than me & had moved out) Was "The Wild Bunch" I completed the game on that very 1st attempt, found the guy who I was supposed to be chasing and beat him in the quick draw. Much to my sister's disgust as she hadn't managed to complete the game despite many attempts. (Must admit that I've never managed to complete it again, but that doesn't matter 😁)

Great video and very excited about the Speccy and would spend a fortune on games in the 80's for various incarnations of Spectrum that came out. I'm new to ROMS etc, will there be (or is there already) a tutorial on where and how to get these, marketplaces etc and how to install them? Decathlon made me save up for a Kempston joystick, which was the only one that would survive the abuse! I'm sure that Trap Door, was one of the first games that used the ability for the 128K spectrum + to limit colour bleed when pixels of different colours clash. I could be wrong, but looking at it, it does appear to be doing it far less, than the other games. I remember buying that game, because it was the first one that used the technology. C64 owners would laugh at the time of course!

A god bless the Kempston! I'm hoping that is one of the peripherals they are planning on releasing in 2025. It would be a definite purchase for me! You might be right about The Trap Door.
