*NOTE*
No you aren't crazy, the amounts of flour and cake mix are doubled at the beginning of this video :) I started off making the full recipe (that uses an entire cake mix and 5 cups of flour) and then realized that it made 2 dozen large rolls in two large pans. Too many for my family. I divided the flour/cake mix/salt mixture in half after mixing and set one portion aside for another day. I then continued on with the recipe. Below is the recipe I made in the video that makes 1 dozen rolls.
1/2 box of cake mix (white or yellow)
1 package instant dry yeast (2 1/4 tsp)
1 1/4 cups warm water
1/2 tsp vanilla
1/2 tsp salt
2 1/2 cups flour
1 cup sugare (for filling)
Cinnamon (for filling)
Frosting of your choice.
Heart sprinkles for decorating.
Pink food colouring.
Combine the cake mix, flour and sat in a large bowl.
In a small bowl combine the water, yeast, vanilla and food colouring.
Add the water mix to the flour/cake mix mixture. Stir until a dough ball forms. Knead with your hands to get a smooth elastic dough or use a dough hook on your mixer. The dough will be sticky.
Place dough ball in a greased bowl and cover and allow to rise until doubled (about an hour depending on how warm your kitchen is)
Roll out dough onto a lighlty floured surface. Roll out into a rough rectangle shape that is about 1/4 of an inch in thickness.
Sprinkle with about 1 cup of white sugar (you can use brown sugar, but it will change the colour of your finished rolls).
Sprinkle with cinnamon.
Roll up from the long side into a log.
Slice log into 2 inche slices and place cut side down into a greased baking dish (about 10x15").
Cover and allow to rise until doubled (about an hour)
Uncover and bake at 350F for 20 minutes or until the rolls are done and light brown on the tops.
Frost rolls when they are warm or cold.
Sprinkle with heart sprinkles if desired.
Store at room temperature in a covered container.
These are best the same day. If they get a bit stale the next and subsequent days, just microwave for a few seconds before eating.
