@@_cathalo_4984 No one says that the Astros were the only team stealing signs. Just that the system was so corrupt that it affected an essential element of the game, and was far worse than any other team ever in the history of baseball. That is the reason that the penalties imposed were so severe. In Game 5 at Houston where they were clearly cheating, Kershaw threw 51 off speed pitches. The Astros swung and missed at none of them. Someone ran a computer sim and determined that the odds of this happening were 128,000 to 1. So if Kershaw pitched against the Astros 30 times a year, then in 4267 years, it might happen . . . . once. The way that the Astros were cheating, it wasn't even baseball any more. It was some other game. That was why the penalties were so harsh $5 million, draft picks, lost jobs, and that is why the Astros, owners, management and players simply accepted them without appealing. All of the Astros fans want them to win this year. So do I. I think that the younger players like Altuve actually wanted to try to win honestly, without cheating, but the pressure was put on them by owners and corrupt management (and less talented players) to shut up and continue cheating. The legacies of those younger players are tarnished because of the cheating; and I hope they win this year so that they can show that they can win straight up, without cheating the way that they cheated in 2017. 2017 is forever tarnished by the cheating, which took place throughout the postseason. If they can win in 2022, it will be a proud moment for this damaged franchise.
@drbryant232 жыл бұрын
@@_cathalo_4984 In Game 7 against Darvish at Dodger Stadium, the cheating is so obvious that they needed to make up a "rumour" of Darvish "tipping his pitches" because nothing else could explain anomalies such as (i) a pitcher with the highest K rate among righthanders in MLB history (!), and with an 11.8 K rate against these very Astros suddenly being unable to get any Astro to swing and miss at any of his offspeed pitchers; (ii) Bregman, who stole a TOTAL of three bases from 2020-2022, feeling confident enough to try to steal THIRD in the seventh game of a World Series; (iii) Gurriel, who saw the fewest pitches of any player in the entire league in 2017 working a 13 (thirteen!) pitch AB against Darvish, fouling off pitch after pitch. I can go on and on. It's ridiculous, and it really isn't baseball anymore at that point.

Wouldn't have mattered - if you understand baseball, you know that you can beat almost any pitcher if you know whether they are throwing off speed or not. There is no question that they were cheating in Game 7 at Dodger Stadium. The statistics are simply too improbable. Darvish has the highest K rate in MLB history (!) among right handers, but he couldn't get any Astro (even career journeymen like Marisnick and Gonzalez) to swing at any off speed pitches. Gurriel, who sees the fewest per AB than anyone else in the league, works a 13 (!) pitch count against Darvish. Bregman, a guy who has stolen 35 bases in his entire life, steals third (!) in the first inning of Game 7 of a world series.

fixcpu nothing was scripted or rigged. The odds were in the favor of the Astros that day.
@Korijenkins14146 жыл бұрын
I've seen a lot of stupid people, but never someone dumb enough to claim baseball is scripted. You do realize this is one of the most luck based sports there is, correct? As an example, lets just consider how many possibilities there are in any single AB. The batter could walk on 4 pitches, get hit by a pitch, hit a single, double, triple, inside the park homer, homer, reach on an error, reach on a strikeout, or reach via catcher's interference. If theres a runner on he could GIDP, LIDP, or reach on a fielder's choice. Thats just offensive play, and not at all factoring in other things like exit velocity and distance. What about pitchers? How many pitches can they throw? Well, they have a four seamer, a two seamer, curveballs, sliders, knuckleballs, slurves, etc. Now theres location. A pitcher can go inside, outside, up, down, and right down the middle. He can bounce pitches in, he can throw a wild pitch, the catcher could miss a passed ball. Now explain to me how, with all the possibilities that can come from whats above, a game would be scripted?

@billny333 жыл бұрын
Sign stealing has always been somewhat of a grey area in baseball history. There are no rules that say you can't steal signs. In recent years they have tried to enforce punishments against using technology to steal signs. The 1951 New York baseball Giants stole signs using a guy in the bullpen with a telescope relaying signs to the hitter. They came back from down 13 1/2 games to the rival Brooklyn Dodgers and won the pennant on a walk off homerun in the last of a 3-game tiebreaker against the Dodgers. For years this was considered a baseball fairy tale that everybody waxed poetic about since nobody knew about the sign stealing until 2001. Is it cheating? Yes, is it breaking clear-cut rules in the books? I'm not so sure, and for that reason I'm not sure gamblers would have a case in court. But it would be interesting to see what would happen. I could be wrong. I know during the 2019 playoffs, some Yankee players were complaining about trash can banging that happened when they played the Astros. My thought was "of course, everyone's always trying to get an edge" that tends to be how I see it but maybe I'm a bit cynical there.

Were the Houston Cheaters stripped of title? Hope they were. Crazy they celebrated like they were actually playing the game
@billny333 жыл бұрын
Nope, no American professional sports team has ever been stripped of a title for any reason. Olympic gold medalists yes, but that's international competition. College teams have been stripped of a title if they were found to have used bribes or payment to recruit or keep players or if one of their players was considered "ineligible" but to me when you strip a title, the people that saw that team win and celebrate that day still feels like they saw who the winner was. I'm ok with nobody being stripped of titles. Find other ways to punish them. I wish they did more to the Astros going forward but what's done is done. It wouldn't make the Dodgers feel better or cause the Astros to feel like their title didn't count. I think also a case could be made that the Patriots winning the Super Bowl the year Tom Brady was found to have deflated footballs is very similar as far as compromising the integrity of the sport and that title wasn't taken away either. If it had, I'm not sure how much good it would have done.

I have to look at statistics. Darvish outside of the 2017 WS, pitched 29-2/3 postseason innings. His ERA is 3.14, which is better than his career ERA, and his strikeout rate is 9.4 K/9 which if you understand baseball, if very strong. Statistics don't lie. He may not have gotten the wins, he may not have been great, but he did not "suck" and he never had trouble getting hitters to swing at his pitches. On the other hand, he really sucked against the Astros, and he only got ONE swinging strike on an off speed pitch. Statistically, that is completely improbable and is only explainable by one thing - the Astros were cheating.
