This video literally explains all of the reasons why I am a causal player XD I have immense respect for those that can play competitive, but I know I couldn't do that, especially since I'm not the best at constructing decks or learning the ins and outs of a deck and mastering it! I think it really comes down to how much of your time, money, and emotions you want to spend on the game. I view it in the same way I view my other hobbies that could have been careers. If they were to become more than just a hobby, then you might end up spending way too much of your resources on it than your comfortable with. In that way, it's not just the stresses of the game itself that are mitigated, but also the stresses of how the game interacts with your life that are mitigated.

I’ve always had a struggle making it into the competitive scene. I also love to play E heroes. Seeing this video, I can definitely relate to this in the sense that it’s not that serious. It is after all a children’s card game and yes older people do play this game, it’s meant to be just for fun. With that said, think I’ll just give up on competitive and just go casual. Coming from Magic and playing Duel Links for a little over a year, I finally did the leap over to the TCG during the summer 2018 to build me a functional Cyberse Link deck, because I liked both the art of (mainly) the Code Talkers and the Cyberse cards, and how they played using the newest summoning mechanic of Yu-Gi-Oh!. I am both constrained by a budget and time between these two card games and other life responsibilities. As well as, I just want to build and play YuGiOh deck(s) that appeal to me and enjoy them at my leisure and I probably wouldn't be able to do that without getting curbstomped by the more competitive players, so casual level is where I will stay.

Love this video and the casual life! I've played tons of yugioh over the years since the game released and my favorite experiences have always been from my dueling groups casual duel night, where we show up with just a ton of our fun decks and just do all these different matchups and see how they play out! It's also fun to be able to have so many different decks that didn't cost much and just always be able to switch up what you are playing on the fly. Anyone who hasn't tried casual level dueling I'd recommend give it a try!

Man I agree 100% I was competitive for a long while and then it hit me I'm not that well off so I was saving and preventing myself from doing other things just to gain cardboard, also I hated that I needed to pay so much money for 1 1! Deck when that same money can grant me access to multiple decks. And another main reason why I quit competitive and rather be causal is the competitive scene and more precisely toxic locals and toxic elitists, it got to the point where Yugioh was no fun anymore and after buying my Friend's collection which granted me multiple decks I was out I have more fun with friends at home than at that toxic locals. I'll occasionally buy the new products mainly structure decks because I love cyberse but my days of competitive yugioh are over

The best thing about playing casually is probably that the players are not too serious. You can chitchat with them during the duel, they kindly explain you how exactly their deck works and both of you just have a fun time instead of worrying about the next hand trap or extra link comin in.

Don't give up. Don't quit. I've been playing this game for 17 years and I will admit more than half of that time has been spent mired in frustration. Hell, the first time I got Yata-Locked I threw a nearby 20-sided die at a guy's face. Not my proudest moments, although the guy was a total asshole to begin with. But I digress. I stuck with the game. I didn't know why at the time, because if I kept losing and getting frustrated what was the point? It wasn't rational. It didn't make sense. But it didn't have to. It was simply because I liked something about the game, and I wanted to have fun with it no matter what other people said. This game has gotten me through some of the worst moments in my life, and has led me to some truly wonderful friendships as well. It doesn't matter if my reasoning for sticking with it was rational. It doesn't matter if the whole world told me I shouldn't play my deck the way I want to. I stuck with it because I wanted to. And I'm glad I did. One of the best things I've ever done in my life to be perfectly honest.

This kinda goes along with your second point, but I love knowing about all the cards. Me and my yugioh group make wild decks that are all around $15. These fun decks bring up older cards that came out before I got back into yugioh or cards which have neat effects that I haven't considered. A year and a half ago when we started getting back into the game, a friend and I found Superheavy Samurai SteamTrain online and thought it was a fake. Now I have a fun pure SHS deck which I love playing with. I think playing casually opens up the card pool which to me is all the fun. Who else has read every trap card on the yugioh wiki?

Plus I can’t stand that stupid hand shuffling crap! I don’t know if it’s a psychological factor for why they do it, but that makes me want to hand scoop.

For my casual deck, I run a combination of things. I run Black Rose Dragon with a playset of rose garden to cut monster's attack in half for my opponent, forcing them to set monsters. Then I run monsters that destroy defense position monsters without flipping them face up or applying damage calculation like ninja grandmaster sauske, and sasuke samurai. I run a rank 2 XYZ engine when my opponent inevitably feeds me tokens via effect, and of course have removal like noblemen of crossout. The idea of the deck is to force my opponent to choose between giving me free removal or summoning in attack position, which halves their monster's attack and gives me free damage. Haven't played competitive in 15 years and I love it. The look on people's face when I pull out a gishki deck at locals is priceless

I restarted the game last year and am at home in both casual and competitive worlds. I enjoy tinkering a lot and love the freedom and leisure of just going at it with casual, crazy deck builds that wouldn´t make sense competitively. On the other hand I really enjoy the challenge and the stakes of competitive play and the challenge it represents as well. So I wouldn´t choose a side on which playstyle is better. There are a lot competitive or casual purists, but the real fun for me personally lies in the middle of both :) Decks I enjoy most at the moment: Yubel and Cyberdark-Virus-Combination

@@WShoup9818 dude, if that's how you want to play then play that way! I think that's the thing about the casual attitude vs The Meta attitude. Casuals say you can do what you want. There's nothing wrong with playing meta , but there's nothing wrong with playing casual either. I think there may also be this misconception that casual players don't understand the skill behind meta play. Playing casual is a choice for a lot of people. I think a lot of casual players could go full meta if they want to, but in my experience I sincerely doubt they'd have as much fun. If you play meta , and you get to the point where you win what you're looking for, you earned that! And that's something to be proud of! In that regard I wish you the best of luck dude! Since I dropped competitive I mostly just stuck around with using one deck. Being a casual and limiting my collection to just cards I like or that are my favorites allowed me to see this weird evolution over years of playing. I still got better after stepping out of tournaments, and some of those guys thought I was pretty good at the game before. You never have to lose faith in a deck you actually want to play.

Gotta say I absolutely love casual Yugioh, got back into Yugioh mid last year with the intention of just playing with mates and family, decks don't cost that much money so we can afford to build more of them so there are much more unique plays and different match ups, it's usually a good laugh and not that stressful, games can often tip either way and it's pretty balanced between a lot of our decks. Overall really enjoy this way of playing, I understand that a lot of people like tournaments and meta and stuff but it's not for some of us and that's what is pretty cool about Yugioh, it's like 2 different games.

I prefer being a casual because it's more fun to me. I've got 3 different kinds of warrior decks (gearfried, e/masked heroes, and lightsworn), two different spellcaster decks (both magicians but different set up for different scenarios), an aqua deck designed with the sole purpose of forcing someone to deck out, a burn deck, and about 5 dragon decks ( 2 blue eyes decks, a light/dark deck, dragon ruler, and a red eyes deck). My favorite and I believe strongest deck is my light and dark dragon deck which was designed by trial and error against everyone of my friends who I used to duel against and myself. We were all fairly competitive, so their decks weren't pushovers and I would keep optimizing and restrategizing until my deck was strong against anyone's decks. It's been a few years since I have actually played though so it probably could stand a few updates and lineup changes but when you work out of town and constantly move around it's not worth the effort mostly.

Yo Alex Fields, I want to say thank you for this video. My roommate and I have been thinking about getting back into Yu-Gi-Oh but for casual play though we both were competitive in the past (XYZ Era being the retire).

While I lean more on the competitive side, I love the fact that the reason I got into it in the first place was going into my campus and just sit down with friends and play casually and it’s the reason I always carry my tourney deck and a fun deck at the same time

I’m a casual player with a competitive personality. I run a red-eyes deck and recently found a strategy which gets me red-eyes fusion in my first 3 turns 8/10 times (it’s about 56 cards plus a 7 card extra deck)

To me playing casually is way more fun and enjoyable than playing competitively. I always enjoyed a slower game pace of Yu-Gi-Oh. I enjoy experimenting with a unpopular deck and maxing out it's potential to be even better with newer combos that haven't been done before.

man, casual is pretty much all I played when I used to play yugioh. but the decks I always had the most fun using were ghostricks, ojama-raccoons, fire kings, gishikis, and the occasional mismatch of monsters for a decent synchro spam deck that didn't build off an archetype. and waaaay back when dueling network was around and xyz monsters were just getting to be a thing, I remember a player saying I was running a troll deck and calling a judge because I was using a deck that used the D.D monsters with the Helios monsters and a few Needle Worms

I had to make the switch a few years back and I never looked back. All the Goofy and fun decks I was able to build out of it, and even managed to make the best ones I tried even stronger.i end up having so much fun against people on a casual level. It just makes me more and more excited each time a pack is introduce. Cause it means more cards. Or even support for casual decks to make them stronger. Big shout out to Destiny heros. Favorite archtype getting some kick ass support soon

I much prefer playing casually for multiple reasons. 1) banned cards become limited to 1 as directed in Traditional format. 2) sometimes cheaper. 3) and this is a big one, since I play casually with others who do the same, I don't have to deal with the current meta of 8+ minute turns, endless hand traps, guaranteed exact same board every game filled with so many negates and interrupts it prevents the opponent from even sneezing. I don't have fun that way, having a game end on turn 3. I like pitting my whits against my opponents and seeing just how we can play around each others cards and strategies - not by making the same exact board every time and swinging for game before anything even got going. 4) easier for me since I got married and had a kid. unable to devote time and resources to keeping up with upcoming tournaments. 5) I find it much more varied and much more fun. I don't run into the same deck 100+ times with only small variations.

Both casual and competitive are a lot of fun. But if you have enough money to play competitively, I would. Casual is great and sure I love playing a bunch of weird tech choices like Power Wall or Paleozoic Canadia, but for me nothing feels better than taking down a worthy opponent. Sure I’ve lost a match to a rogue deck that I should have been able to beat in the past, but it feels good playing against someone who topped a regionals with their deck and beating them.

Thanks for this video. A lot of videos I've seen lately have talked about how "oh well this deck/this card isn't good in the current meta" and all these implications that whoever plays them is an idiot, it just makes me feel bad. I've been out of the game since Xyz's (our only local card shop closed down back in 17, and the yugioh club at the campus closed down due to the club's president stealing funds) and I couldn't wrap my head around pendulums, I'm just starting to get used to Links. It's just easier to play with friends that use older decks without feeling like an outsider in your own community

I first got into yugioh at 2015 or 16, bought three DDD pendulum decks made a decent deck and had at it, bought all the DDD extra deck monsters and before long I had ten casual build decks including dragon rulers (we say fuck the ban list) I enjoy all my decks including the ones I spent extra on to make both more powerful and more creative

Me personally I always played casual cause I just liked playing whatever cards I want and have a good time at the Lunch table. I ain't trying to be super elite I'm just trying to chill out with my boys and game out and the one rule we had was if you didn't like what the other person did or played as long as it wasn't cheating you ether counter it and play like a man or pick up your cards and give up. Thats just me and how I like to play if others like competitive then more power to you I just wanna chill and have fun tho lol.

the way he talks about competitive vs casual players is kinda funny in regard to the group i duel with, because there are two people who play real meta decks (at least one builds actual meta decks from the current meta, then ditches them halfway into building them because they get to expensive, and one plays a blue eyes deck, which aren't the current meta, but were around the time he built the deck, plus ik they pop in every so often in the meta) and the rest of us all play some form of rogue/casual deck, dark magician, gravekeepers, earthbound immortals, darklords, fiend deck, red eyes, traptrix, utopia warrior deck, just to name a few, and even though for the longest time no one could beat the blue eyes, but slowly we all found our own playing styles that even for decks that are "scrub loser trash" we all could hold our own to meta level decks, and the best part is we had fun doing it, because even though we are all competitive people and our duels often get stressful. we always end with the duelist having fun, maybe yelling and screaming, and muttering swears when you run into that classic mirror force card, but that's all part of the fun

You are right there are certain things that separates casual and competitive in a lot of ways I have never been in either one of them bec I have never played in a tournament but for me who loves yugioh a lot and devoted my life into creating my own printed yusei fudo anime/manga cards/deck was unbelievable I even lost with it but my real deck that even had synchros/xyz only and with blue eyes white dragon, mirror force, pot of greed, monster reborn won some of them and lost some of them even with the top one player of our school who uses a yusei fudo cards especially stardust damn it a wish I could challenge him again anyway I will buy a yusaku fujiki structure deck, booster packs etc cards that contain yusaku's cards well not just him yuma, kaiba, kaito, yugi, jaden, zane did I forgot someone else anyway characters that literally made me love the game thank you.

I've been playing competitive since 2010. Recently I found that playing casually is a lot more fun and healthier. I've got my fair share of toppings regionals and ots so it's time to let others top. It's okay to lose as long as it's fun.

Playing competitively just doesn’t seem fun to me. You have to be a meta-sheep and follow the meta, spend large quantities of money and always adapt or you’ll get left behind. You can’t really experiment with deck building, instead you always have to use the “winning” strategy, even if you have zero fun playing it (e.g. Hand Traps)
