I feel sorry for Akiza’s parents. Hideo did make a big mistake by calling her a monster as well as focusing more on his job, but there are many parents who are the same way. Unlike Sayer, Akiza’s parents did care about her. They simply didn’t know how to help her.

Agreed. Many commenters keep saying Akiza's father is the worst and, while I agree he didn't do the right things a father should have done, he was placed in a lose-lose situation no matter what. It's kinda upsetting when people tend to see things black and white.

I've known friends that work themselves to near death for their families. 1. Can we just agree that Martha was great in not only giving Yusei the stern talk he needed, but for also proving that he has a little crush on Akiza? This marks Cosmic Rose shipping out. 2. It is saddening by what happened to Akiza and what her father did was definitely not an ideal father, but he isn't entirely to blame. His job, responsibilities, the pressure, it can really get to a parent, especially when they have a child. And for his remark to Akiza, well, how would you react if someone you care about randomly through you into a wall with psychic powers? Understandbly, he was quite radled. Not saying he was the best father, but he did try then and he's trying now.

cameraman I guess it really depends on the people who approach it too. Like with Akiza's first two opponents back in the Fortune Cup: they saw her as a witch or a criminal, but Yusei was more focused on trying to help her with her troubles rather than ostracize her like the others did. Because Yusei is like her in his own way with being misunderstood.

The complexity of Akiza's initial relationship with her parents is what makes her backstory so interesting. On one hand, you have a troubled, eight year old girl who doesn't understand what is happening to her; she only understands that her powers are pushing literally everyone in her life away from her. On the other hand, like you said, that same girl doesn't really comprehend all of her father's responsibilities and at the end of the day, said parents really have no idea how to help her. What Akiza initially perceived as her parents trying to push her away was actually just them trying to find someone who could help her. Her father's attempts to help her himself ended up in many mistakes that really strained his relationship with her. This cultivated in him slapping her when she accidentally hurt other kids at Duel Academy (not shown in the English show). I think it was that same moment he realized that he needed someone else to help his daughter. Of course, none of this absolves Hideo's actions that lead to Akiza's mental health issues, but you can definitely sympathize with how difficult this situation was for all parties involved. Someone like Yusei was exactly the person he needed to find for his daughter, so when she got wrapped around the little finger of the manipulative egomaniac that was Sayer/Divine, who only brought out her worst qualities to control her like a pawn, it must have destroyed Hideo. Overall the relatable and complex grey in this situation is a welcome change from most anime backstories, where villian's motivations are driven from "being evil". Nobody in Akiza's story is that one dimensional. Even Sayer/Divine, who is probably the darkest and most truly evil character in the entire show. From the show we know he experienced the same social rejection Akiza did. The difference was that he was not fortunate enough to meet people who could help him overcome it like Akiza was. The prolonged isolation is likely what led to his egomania, narcissism, and compulsive need to control the people who once rejected him. The original Japanese version of the second Aki/Misty duel really explores his motivations for his actions and makes you honestly feel a bit bad for him despite all of the horrible things he has done. I think this shared understanding is why Akiza can never bring herself to hate Divine/Sayer like Yusei does when she finds out the true motivations of Arcadia and all of the things he had done and hid/lied to her about. Even though she was still healing at the time she found out and can't bring herself to forgive him for anything either, I don't think this ever changes when she moves on beyond her past in the second half of the series.

Akiza's situation......is messed up. And that's putting it very lightly. And also, I gotta say that I really like how Yusei himself is portrayed in this episode. His reactions to a lot of things are completely realistic. He's traumatized from almost dying to Kalin. He doubts himself now because of it, but now he's being called upon to go help someone in their time of need.

How defeated Yusei looks at 15:16 is absolutely priceless. Though I'd believe at this point in the series with all his own personal self-sacrifice issues, he wasn't really capable of comprehending his feelings for Akiza. That character growth hadn't really happened to him yet, and doesn't until much later for him; unlike Akiza, who gets it faster over the next 4 episodes or so. Still, the look on his face has, "Everyone can read me like a goddamn novel" all over it. Then there is also 15:19 "Plotting Blister's unfortunate demise" look. XD
