Something that I feel is under appreciated is Kazuki Takahashi’s artwork; very comic-book inspiration and the artwork constantly evolving and getting better over time.

the manga itself is a masterpiece, the art is fantastic, the way he creates games in the manga is very interesting, yes the duel masters game takes over for most of the series, but even so it still comes up with new ways to make it much more interesting, like how naruto one piece and bleach evolve their characters through power ups, so does yugioh by evolving the monsters used by the MCs

One thing that I can never forgive is the treatment that the anime did to Anzu and Honda. Gone are the bonds that made them truly friends and now we have 2 glorified cheerleaders who do pretty much nothing but gawk at how awesome Yugi is. Sure, they duel even less in the manga than they do in the anime, but damn if they don't make their presence really felt during those downtime between duels

My little sister and I gushed over the "rare find" of Shonen Jump at the grocery store, and we spent hours talking about the few pages we managed to read before we got called away. Yugi was picking up white socks off his floor, and his mom was calling for him. We were amazed that he had a mom! We loved the art! Finding season 0 in those days was impossible; we had to use quizilla of all things! But we felt special and loved talking about it so much. Our local library didn't have the manga at the time, even though I looked for it several times, so unfortunately I have never read the manga in full. Yugi, the millennium world, the cards, all of it was incorporated into our playing pretend, mishmashed with other series we liked. To this day I have never rewatched the anime, because I want to keep it special in my memories, but it would be nice to read the manga from start to finish. :)

What I love the most about Yu-Gi-Oh! is how it presents strategy and makes deep reflexion look as cool and entertaining as raw action in direct fights. And it's not a simple task to keep a turn based system captivating. You have to play on psychological tension and It's surely not as straightforward. But the big + is it keeps the cool punches, kicks and laser beams but adds big brain plays and frequent unexpected turns of event to it. This is the show that shows the best how badass intense reflexion can be.

Kaiba absolutely outclasses every other Shonen Manga Rival when it comes to being obsessed with beating his rival. The guy literally advanced society several decades, possibly even a century or two, overnight, creating portable hologram-projectors and building a space-elevator with an orbital station, where a super-advanced AI worked for two years on studying a puzzle, the space elevator also serving as a gateway to the afterlife. Keep in mind that Yu-Gi-Oh! takes place in 1997, and DSoD in 1999! They still use freaking VHS-tapes for movies, yet Kaiba's out there advancing society's tech-level just because he wants to play a children's card game.

26:42 Boy is THAT an understatement. The card game has gotten to be a massive mess because they refuse to use set rotation with multiple formats. For the longest time, they allowed powercreep to be the single major driving force behind sales, until it became practically unsustainable without also using the banlist to nerf previous decks that could beat the new cards. Letting the powercreep go nuts has resulted in a game that's a pretty significant departure from what it was, and not in a good or fun way. As far as "always having some worth", that's not really true, not the way you're implying, specifically BECAUSE of powercreep. Some other games at least have alternate formats where you can use cards that have been rotated out, or even rotate them back in with reprints. Because Yu-Gi-Oh! runs mostly off powercreep, most older cards that were once good can't compete, at least not without new cards to support them, and the ones that CAN get/stay banned so they don't interfere with sales. Set rotation, particularly with alternate formats, is more responsible, allowing the companies to make sales without as much risk of wrecking balance or warping how the game itself plays, which is what powercreep does.

I wholeheartedly agree with you I just don't see the anime as the same timeline/universe, let alone 4Kids dub some people might say the anime is canon but the manga will always be the true canon to me while anime just tried to retcon to be closer to irl cards, which created all the "Yugi cHeAtEd!" "He mIsPlAyEd!" when in reality, they were just poorly adapted. Also, about the deck of Sugoroku (AKA Solomon in 4Kids dub). If you really think about it, his deck was actually strong by that time. Just look at the Vol.1 of irl OCG release. you will see that the baseline of monsters was 800 ATK and below. 1200 was premium. And the infamous "Mushroom Man" has both ATK and DEF at 800. He was not weak at all by the time he was called the game master. His deck truly had no pathetic card.

This is such a great video. It really captures the strength of the manga's characters, storyline and artwork. I've only read up to early Battle City, but seeing how Kazuki Takahashi's artwork evolved over the course of the series was so good. I loved seeing how his artwork continued to grow even after the series ended too. Admittedly, I like some of the changes in the Duel Monsters anime, like the huge stadiums in Duelist Kingdom. Maybe I'm just more used to them, but I think that they help make the duels more visually interesting for a TV series. That being said, the DM series loses a lot from skipping those early volumes. Duelist Kingdom is in a lot of ways a follow up of the Death-T arc, especially for Yami Yugi and Kaiba. I still like the anime, but the manga is really great too and hopefully I'll be able to finish it one of these days.

I think this video really nails down why a lot of Yugi boomers don't take real well to the visual design of modern archetypes as well. There's a severe lack of grittiness to the archetypes nowadays, with only a few recent exceptions like Memento, Kairyu-shin (modern umi control), Danger and Unchained coming to mind. Honestly, it feels like Konami and even the community misunderstands this, with upcoming archetypes like Horus being a distinct example. Yugioh monsters weren't iconic because they had an Egyptian motif (there's nothing Egyptian about Blue-Eyes in its design). They were iconic because the designs felt very dangerous and low fantasy. Its not like we can't have the other archetypes we have today (we had monsters like Injection Fairy Lily back in the day), but there's not a lot of archetypes nowadays that have that sort of edge (as cheesy as that sounds). Even new support for legacy decks like the Poker Knights feel very sanitized, and stuff like Tistina and Ghoti just barely miss the mark. Granted, i get that a lot of this has to do with the fact that modern day audiences really take to the more modern anime aesthetic, but there's room for variety in this game. I mean, if Magic the Gathering can have a fucking Dr Who and Lord of the Rings set, then there's no reason why Yugioh can't have both weeb shit and classic Yugioh designs coexisting. Like, this game just doesn't make cards anymore with artwork like Gale Dogra. I'd love to see a modern archetype with a rough aesthetic like that.

Yugioh as a whole (excluding Rush Duels or shows related to it) is mainly for a teenage male demographic. Which is why it’s so violent and dark. Understand, it’s a Shonen, which is a demographic term for manga and anime aimed mainly at early to late teen boys (12-18). And according Hiroyuki Nakano the current chief editor of Weekly Shonen Jump, he states that since day one the magazine has always targeted young teenage boys and that the strong focus they have to always keep in mind cor the magazine. Which tell you, they always have to remind mangaka of this if they want to publish their works in the magazine. Plus the Yugioh OCG official says on the back of every pack, deck and set that the target age range is “対象年齢12才以上” (Translation: “Target age 12 years and older”) Which implies it’s for early teens or older. And “12 and up” ratings in most countries (including Japan) consider this a standard teen rating. The series is so amazing with how dark and violent it is. To us Americans, it’s like a whole different series when we watch the original Japanese version or read the manga. And the OCG is legally confirmed by Konami to be a separate game from the TCG (despite the cards being the same and only in different languages). But, of course, there’s a reason behind that, and that’s a subject for another time.
