As someone who played(in UK) in this format and formats around this time. I always have felt that yugioh in between the syncro and XYZ era where the best. Tele-dad/lightsworn format frognarch/ plants/ fish otk wind up / inzektor / rabbit Rabbit/ mermail / wind up Dragon rulers

Pendulums and Link were definitely mistakes - so I partially agree. I really love Goat Format through the release of Destiny Heroes. Those slow paced formats centered around grinding were very enjoyable.

@@YGOHistory I also loved goat format, Big fan of Perfect circle format LaDD being a right Boss. Don't get me wrong I've enjoyed some parts of links and pendulums but for me current yugioh every deck almost feels the same main deck is combo parts to vomit extra deck stuff. While the extra deck has already been a vital part of yugioh it always felt like deck had more uniqueness to them but maybe I'm looking at it through rose tinted glasses. XD

@@YGOHistory I think that's a good example there, back in the XYZ and syncro eras the extra deck was more a tool box for each situation that came up. Sure there was the odd combo deck that did daft things turn one but nothing like what we have now. I feel like I've become one of those old men who screaming back in my day XD. Hey man, I love how you talk about theory in the format as it’s not something easily found online and how you reflect back on your choices with for example emptiness and gellenduo. What is your concensus on playing upstart goblin and the deckbuilding knowledge we have learned over the past few years and applying that to older formats where proper deckbuilding was not something well known and most decks could be significantly improved if we were to rebuild them with 2021 hindsight.
@YGOHistory
@YGOHistory 3 жыл бұрын
I wholeheartedly believe Upstart is overrated. I used it in Sylvans (2014) and it was fine in that deck BECAUSE I did not want to run any OTHER three cards. I ran Upstart at the 2011 WCQ (GK) because it synergies well with Royal Tribute (set/activate RT/flip Upstart - draw monster). But big picture - for JUST the deck trimming? Overrated. It increases the odds of seeing a one of by SUCH a minuscule amount over the course of an event - usually just one game. If you tracked the 1K in life versus the increased likelihood of seeing a one of - they might even out.

Awesome stuff! But why no compulsory? I thought that CED was much more useful than bottomless or dprison and sometimes even warning. Because for example it was chainable, an instant out to xyz’s and big monsters, great for returning my effect veilered rabbit, dodging veiler on my tgu etc. I also remember the 3rd place ycs Philly playing 3 of them. 😆. Btw, I would love to see a video on your september ‘12 f/l list wishlist! When I read your article on it including banning Hunter, Reborn, Card destruction, BLS, limiting Rabbit, Grapha, Hornet etc, I got very excited! Would also love to see some duels in that format! 😊

I was watching this and felt compelled to make a comment. Whether it’ll be appreciated or not, I’m not sure, but I’ll make it nonetheless. I was, unfortunately or fortunately, very good at cheating. My reputation has been tarnished as a result of that (even though it takes much more than cheating knowledge to be successful) but since this video is old and you’re probably the only one who’ll read this I’ll speak directly to you. During this format I was very busy going to school and taking care of my mother who had just gone through a divorce. I didn’t have a lot of time to play YGO but I remember enjoying reading your articles in the college library. I went to Nationals on a whim during this year, mostly as just a chance to get away from bad things that were going on in life. I had to LCQ and register a decklist that Friday night because of it, so I built a deck as close as I thought you would submit because I saw you as the master of the format. Later that night we got your decklist through text and I did play that decklist for rounds 1-7 (call it cheating if you want, I personally don’t really see it that way) before switching to the decklist I had submitted because I felt forced to. Whether I was playing the deck we made on Friday based on your theories, or your actual decklist, it was one of the easiest tournaments of my life. Outside of “switching decks” I never cheated at all and I ran through most opponents like a hot knife through butter. The deck was incredible. If I had been able to use your exact decklist through the top cut, I would’ve won in Top 8 (I went 2nd in G3 and had Rabbit+Veiler and he opened Dfissure, Factory, Magician, Shark), and in my opinion was strongly favored to win the entire thing. But alas I didn’t have access to Maxx “C” or Dyna so I fell to Wind-Up combo. If you ever feel bad about not going to Worlds or anything like that, just know that I consider my success at that Nationals your success, and seeing as I think I would have won the entire thing if I had been using your correct list, I have always seen you as a National Champion since that year. You deserve it.
@YGOHistory
@YGOHistory Жыл бұрын
It takes a lot of vulnerability to admit that. I always still valued your opinion regardless of what I may have knew/heard about cheating. We always preferred the same type of decks (ex. GK at Nats the year before Rabbit! - you also tried out my Summoner Monk + Star Seraph + Thunder King deck although it looked hilarious on paper). Anyway, I appreciate the kind words. I still hope to find the energy to reinvest enough to get back to that level and hopefully win for real. Getting that close (as you know yourself) is only more fuel to the fire. I'd prefer to acknowledge the reality of that run since it keeps the monkey on my back for the future.

Looking back at this format it’s absolutely insane nobody played Vanity’s Emptiness. The card was an absolute blow out and would have won games so much easier back then. Crazy to think it wasn’t really popularised until a year later during Dragon Ruler format.

I guess my reluctance was relying on it in a grind game (minus Laggia) and losing out to triple MST.
@shadowdraqon2479

part of it is cuz, back in the day not every deck special summoned, and people didnt want to main deck cards that werent good vs everything. this is part of the reason why thunder kings/snowman eater were usually in the side deck, cuz if u main vanity emptiness/thunder king/snowman eater, they get popped by inzektors.
@shadowdraqon2479
@shadowdraqon2479 3 жыл бұрын
another reason is that every deck main decked 3 MST and heavy storm so u could go neg 2 if u have vanity's emptiness up.(due to vanity's own effect if another one of ur cards is destroyed vanity dies as well so the opp could mst a different backrow and the opp gets rid of vanity's emptiness and a backrow for 1 MST) this is slightly less of an issue if u play a deck that can protect the vanity's emptiness like Laggia/Shi En/Herald of perfection/etc from MST and heavy storm

Hello Joe, I hope you can read my comment. I want to thank you for this video, and all the 2012 dino rabbit format decks profiles. It was really refreshing to see all the thoughts behind the deck builds and choices, while I was playing the meta in 2012, the news were really down on the meta, calling it boring or autopilote. It is nice to this nicer take on the meta It brings me the questions, do you think 2012 is a nice format to test ? Could you make a big video reviewing the different formats, which one do you recommand playing in retro ? Thank you in advance ISoul

1. nobody knew how good vanities emptiness was. 2. Final countdown and chain burn were also played at different points in the format after chaos dragons became popular 3. Hand traps like maxx C and veiler were god tier vs wind ups. At times it felt like if you didn’t open it or see it you lost. Especially because of the crazy hand loop variant with like maurading captain 4. Gem knight pearl was very important if you were playing against decks with fiendish chain and was legal for nationals. 5. Soul taker became popular after ycs Dallas when chaos dragons showed up.

The last segment about reflecting on choices you didn’t make actually blew my mind because I had arrived on so many of those fringe conclusions. Soooo before even Long Beach or Philly I was testing Emptiness at regs and locals to mild success but I was very impatient and bias with results at the time and I dropped from my considerations early because my circle told me it was bad, but the seed was there. By nationals I was NOT main decking macro or guaiba and I don’t think macro was in the lineup when I was testing this. Secondly, compulsory, me and Bogli were constantly toying with the 41st card, he also elected to play thunderkings, bls, and no guaiba and macro with me at nationals, and I remember gorz and fiendish chain were almost staples and I never liked either of them and did not want to play them(it should be noted I was main decking 3 veiler and happy with it) but I wanted a flexible card that was not a battle trap, and CED is the card we ultimately ended up on and it was great all weekend. Lastly, Mirror Force! You are the only one I’ve ever seen mention it, and it seems poor on paper, but I found no one played around it and it led to a lot of blow outs, I loved it and I opted for a 1/1 split with D-prison at nationals. I often reflect on this format too, 2011- up until around rulers is the best I ever was at yugioh and I never dedicated more time and effort into the game than I did this format. I got knocked out in top 64 at nats to something that was so unlucky and frankly strictly incorrect by my opponent, but I have so many fond memories of this format with all the time I put into it and seeing my efforts rewarded with a top at nationals, at the time it was only my 2nd. Still have copies of the big 4 decks sleeved up

Yo Joe, What about the Stardust btw? I can't remember if I ran that in my Macro Rabbit/Bunny Banish (Alt name I came up with, lol), deck. 🤔 --- Also, a dope memory I have was that, I created my Quasar-Rabbit deck profile really, REALLY early on and it _BLEW UP_ on my channel. I THINK I was the originator of that deck... (at least in the US. Perhaps someone in Japan thought of it too, idk haha) ...cuz I made it pretty early & never saw it anywhere else at the time. It was def ahead of its time. (Seriously, it was my 2nd highest I believe. Go check the views real quick, you don't have to watch the whole vid. For a channel who had like, I think less than 400 subs at the time, that was VERY impressive.)

21:33 also to me, its kind of obvious to play 2 torrential tribute in dino rabbit(or 3 if it was unlimited at that time) and the reason is obvious if u play six samurai or herald of perfection during that time (2012) You dont want to play torrential tribute(and even dark hole as well) in six samurai/herald agents because u dont want to destroy your own shi en or herald of perfection. The difference with laggia is, after he negates something, he no longer has xyz material, meaning he is now a vanilla monster. So who cares if u torrential tribute your 0 xyz material normal monster. Its worth it to nuke the opponents monsters

27:40 looking back on this format, spirit reaper shouldnt have been in the main deck, and like maybe side deck worthy. its horrible vs inzektors obviously/and wind ups can pop it by making rank 5's(andreas pop) or they just handloop u. against the tier 2 decks DW grapha can pop cards/master hyperion can pop cards/heros have gemini spark and hero blast to pop cards.
@shadowdraqon2479

it only felt good vs dino rabbit. and even against that match up they main decked 3 lance to help guaiba kill things, protect dolkka from traps and dark hole/protect laggia if laggia's negate was baited. so it wasnt even perfect vs its best match up(since lance kills reaper) as soon as photon butterfly guy was released. then spirit reaper for sure became less optimal. cuz now every deck had an out to it.
