I'd argue that Boreas the Sharp is worse than Elphin. Boreas is a level 5 without a Special Summoning effect and has the stats of a level 3. Oh and the GY effect basically makes one of your Monsters a Catastor for a turn. It certainly is debatable if the effect is worse than Elphin's battle position change (they're both at about the same level of usefulness because you're still using your battlephase to remove a Monster) but at least Elphin can potentially hit the field, with its Swift Gaia tribute ignoring effect.

Crow was always marked as "The Trickster" in 5Ds. Which means random-ass plot device cards to make his deck extremely versatile for very specific situations and then characters would go "that's our Crow", after the BS. IRL, your deck has to be consistent but not win everytime, unlike in the anime where the protagonists have to win every time for the plot and thus requires them to pull cards out their ass, to make it happen. Remember how many GX era archetypes had a burn or anti-burn card? The thing is Yusei, Jack, Aki, etc didn't have dedicated archetypes, like Qrow. Yusei played Synchrons but most of his deck was comprised of low-level Monsters with defencive effects that facilitated Synchro-spam. Jack played RDA & Resonators but lets not forget the Piece Golem trio and all the Level 4 Beaters, for his absolute power playstlye. Aki played lots of plant Monsters, which worked with creating tokens & burn. They also played Spells & Traps, that filled in the gaps, as well. Aethestically, they were all tied together, fitted in with the duelist and when they were used as Synchro material, it tied the whole thing together. They basically played structure decks with a theme and then added some synchros on top of it. By contrast, Qrow exclusively played only Blackwing monsters, leading to lots of them being forced into the gimmick category. I would say this watered-down the Blackwing playstyle but the colour of this urine indicates severe dehyrdation.

Aurora is just there because the writers felt the need to give everyone a card to fight against the Meklords but Crow was already getting a whole new boss monster with his forced retcon Signer status so they settled on a pack filler gimmick instead.

lol yep. I think the biggest anime to print nerf though was every single freaking meklord card. seriously it would've been the best set of level up monsters easily(sorta, they were never technically named Level 1 or anything but close enough) and instead they got one army card, and themselves with a bunch of crappy traps. remember how freaking good one of their traps was? an entire omni negate for simply negating the effects of your meklord, admittedly it wasnt fused anymore so it has zero attack but still, omni negates are fantastic. or how about just making all the cores to cheat out the big monsters? nope. thank gosh the newer support is actually good.

I have memories with Black Thunder back from playground Yu-Gi-Oh, I had a really shitty Blackwing deck that ran a bunch of the cards from this list and also had Blackwinged Dragon, my opponent was borrowing it against my jank random pack filler deck, they had somehow got out blackwinged dragon and they ended up destroying my Dark Necrofear which I then used to steal the blackwinged dragon, a couple turns later, they activate Black Thunder after battle and I get to negate the damage with Blackwinged Dragon's effect, the only time I have EVER activated Blackwinged Dragon's damage negation effect is against it's own deck

I'm still peaved that Qrow took over Aki's place in the latte half of 5Ds. She was sidelined & put on the bench, to sell more Blackwings. We didn't need a sixth Signer or Blackwinged Dragon. I don't remember any plot points of character moments which were vital for him to have that would have made or breaked the show. At least share the lime-light, as the minimum.

Not only Akiza, but as a side effect even Leo and Luna got just benched too and even other side characters like Yanagi, Tanen, Yusei's friends from Satellite If you think about it, Crow kinda theorically stole the whole "previously villain who later sides with the heroes" thing that would have been Kalin's right after dark signers had crow remained the dark signer boss battle . BUT ALAS Kalin only got that crastown arc and that was it IT SAYS SOMETHING that in Duel Links, Akiza is the first unlockable character by levelling up the Stage as normal (a spot usually reserved for either main rival or best friend), followed by Leo. Almost like an apology for getting their spotlight stolen by crow everywhere else

@@Drakorre The problem is, to many fans, Akiza represented a female character that not only could duel, but also could legitimately be a top-tier duelist, not someone who "allegedly" is great without actually ever being shown winning cause we can't allow that (Mai Valentine), or wins only whenever they feel like it against inferior opponents (Alexis Rhodes), or is just exclusively the cheerleader of the group (Tea Gardner, who would somehow get an even worse version of this later with Tori Meadows in the following series). When Akiza appears at the beginning, she's so hated by people that they'd rather cheer the freaking *criminal* (based on their opinion) from the gutter whom they were booing beforehand due to how destructive she was, all the while she was being used almost exclusively for the gains of a crackpot organization due to her having powers that made her a social outcast. This made her story prime for much of the arc with the Dark Signers given how Sayer is still lurking in the shadows, knowing she's still vulnerable to manipulation. When we have to shift from evil cultists worshipping Nazca line monsters to cybernetic androids from a future wiped out by Skynet, Akiza suddenly drops out of focus in favor of the bromance between Yusei and Bruno/Antimony and those wacky robots. Sure, she gets to become a Turbo Duelist, which was something that kept her out of the key focus of the series, but in the end credits, her role on Team 5Ds is literally "benchwarmer". And let's not forget what happens to Leo and Luna, as well. I'm not trying to downplay Crow, but "helps the kids" being the only thing you're known for isn't exactly a main character trait, especially given that they revisit it verbatim in ARC-V.

Blair (Tag Force 3 only) plays Lightsworn making her better then Alexis in everyway. Luna (Duel Academy) in Tag Force 5/6 was given Batteryman which is kind of hilarious all things considered. Base Luna plays Simochi burn/stall. Akiza is given better plant cards to work with (How do you play Plants without Lonefire is baffling.) Duel Acadeny Akiza plays Psychics. As for the story. I never liked how contrive Akiza's back story is. I can sum it up as family drama gone wrong. As other then ONE scene. Nothing is shown people legitimately hate her until the Fortune Cup and flashbacks which don't mean anything. Rather manufacturered probelms and hate. (Tag Force 4 Duel Academy Akiza is the final nail in the coffin. She attacks others despite they mean no harm). Cult was not done well either. I still hate Sayer Ex-Machina that appears later on.

When I read that card just now, I really thought the summoning condition was banishing the monsters from the grave. It was still shit even then cuz you had to draw it and then its effect only lasts until your end phase, but holy crap it’s even worse LOL Imagine how cool it could have been to synchro summon something and then summon this guy to fake synchro again with the same cards you just used?! It is to counter floodgates effects that doesn't allow you to special summon synchro/extra deck or deck that specifically counters them. That I understand, what I don't understand is why the effect is not permanent? No before you say something about being main deck full armor master, this card was released 8 years before full armor master where all blackwing synchros are not as good.

In the anime Blackboost worked if you just had 2 Blackwings on board, with no cost. Just draw 2 for playing BW lol. Black Feather Beacon summoned one from hand or deck when you took ANY damage. However, when they got toned down for the actual game they uh, went a bit too far lmao

Blackwing - Aurora the Northern Lights was made when the anime convinced itself that Meklords were the synchro-killers they hyped themselves up to be and locked fusions, rituals and high-level beaters in the closet to justify the gang not being able to counter them without synchros. It was a frustrating arc.

I think you're a bit harsh on Elphin. For the longest time he and Sirocco were the only high-level main deck Blackwing that didn't need a tribute summon, which fit nicely into the whole circumventing-summoning-restrictions thing Blackwings seemed to have going on when they were introduced. Elphin and Sirocco were sort of complementary on that front. The position change is outdated, sure, but when Elphin was released it was still viable to turn an Arcana Force 0 into attack position (or any other wall monster to deal damage in this turn at least), since you didn't always have Bora and Sirocco on the field.

The only things I positively acknowledge about Blackwings are the aesthetics and that it was the first Yugioh booster pack I ever got (my first pack even had Elphin the Raven and Black-Winged Strafe, what a coincidence). Maybe that's why I kept losing in playground formats back in 2010, because my dueling skills and deck consistency were on par with Joey Wheeler.

Elphin has some niche applications in Edison format Vayu Turbo . You can be an additional Dark Griefer target, you can vayu synchro him into Armor Master which you normally need to make armed wing first. He isn't too difficult to summon either thanks to Vayu.

I do find it funny some are really in denial Crow probably got his screentime thanks to fans by saying Raging Battle doesn't match the timing but he became one literally the sets after the archetype started gain popularity. Personally, I would say Elphin the Raven would be good if you have Nothung the Starlight on the field or If you use the spell double summon. Thats what i would personally do, or have elphin in my hand with 2 other blackwings that I can special summon without god forbid getting negated.

Northern Lights is the biggest disappointment among all the main deck Blackwings because it has no Synchro Monster whose effect is *worth* copying for the cost, but if a Blackwing Synchro was released that can't normally, easily be put on the field, *and* it has a busted set of effects, Northern Lights goes from bad to decent. For now, the cost doesn't match the payout.

Funniest thing is that, despite how cards usually are more powerful in the anime (see anime Blackboost for example), Aurora the Northern Lights was even worse in the anime because you couldn't even banish any Blackwing Synchro Monster, you could only choose those with the exact same level as the monsters you banished to play Aurora, so you may as well just Synchro the damn thing. The only reason Crow had any use of it as in both of the duels used his opponents ran anti-Synchro strategies (Discord and Granel).

For context, the anti-burn card blackwings are all a result of anime bullshit. 5Ds really liked making antagonists run burn or mill decks for some reason. In addition to this the episode where Crow first summons blackwing dragon was against a guy running a burn deck who also happend to burn Crows father figure (who gave him his deck) to death.

Thing about Elphin and Mistral is that they weren't that garbage at the time of their release. Elphin was for Black Whirlwind and Vayu plays, and Mistral was for it being a 100 ATK Whirlwind target and being a Tuner.
