...I remember when I was younger, I always used to cry at this episode. All of these years later, I still feel the same way. It took everything in me not to start crying. I'm in public, so that could have been a little messy. I miss this anime.. Even if i's old, it was such a large part of my childhood. Come home from school, do homework, then watch Toonami. Yu Yu Hakusho, Rurouni Kenshin, Dragon Ball Z, Naruto (back when it started).. and all the other great shows that played. ;__;

I'm sure most people that watch this can appreciate the strong emotions in this episode, but it hits me so hard, times are tough and I've thought about taking the easy way out so many times. When I'm at my lowest I always think of Yusuke's wake, how hard his sudden absence hits his friends, family, and even teachers. How his teacher wishes he had stayed and made something great of himself, how his friend needed him there in his life. It's always painful watching this episode but it's been such a strong influence that I'll keep watching it as long as I live

One of the reasons why I love YYH is because I can still get hyped for it knowing that I've seen it a thousand times by now. If I come across an episode I instantly have to watch the entire series all over again, for me it's like an adventure whenever I watch this show. Yu Yu Hakusho, G Gundam, Rurouni Kenshin, and Dragonball Z are the greatest anime of all time in my opinion. Bleach, Naruto and One Piece may be "The Big 3" right now, but the first four I named are the original Big Dogs, and sometimes you can't outdo the original.

I do miss the more delinquent less "family-friendly" Yusuke. He smokes, he shakes colleagues for money, he's commited a few petty thefts....but deep down he's not a bad person, just a kid born in bad circumstances. He has a good heart and shines when it really counts (such as giving his life for a little kid, trusting his friends, etc)

In terms of a show's pilot episode, there has never been such a world-class display of art, technique, characterization and narrative in anime than this episode right here. People often complain about the episode's animation, but it's as good as the first episode of an anime made in 1990 could be. What's more is that they don't consider the artistry beyond the animation; the slow-zoom outs of faces, the incredible camera pans (2:20 being one of them,) the absolutely INCREDIBLE perspective camera angles they use (6:23, 20:09). The way they also make such deep, harrowing cuts of character development with the mother, Kuwabara, and Yusuke's mother, conveying so much intricacies and subtleties of therir personality, their struggles, their obsessions, their motivations, and their shame with the very few screentime each had. Even side-characters like Mr. Takana and the little boy showed expression and realism most animes don't achieve with their main protagonists with 300 episodes. To not be invested chronically with these characters, yet to be moved so deeply is a testament to subtle characterization. Also, and perhaps the best thing about it: The dialogue. It feels like these people are real, it feels like these are things somebody would really say, and ways somebody would really react. And the underlying message of the boy that chalked the crying because "people wanted to play with [Yusuke], too." That is such an exercise in power, emotion and a broad stroke characterizing loss and an obscured life and potential. This is God-level right here, folks.

Yu Yu Hakusho is one of those anime that WILL make you cry and feel. No matter how many times I watch this episode I always cry at the funeral part. Kuwabara's pain and grief over losing Yusuke makes you choked up and Yusuke realizing that he is wanted. One of the best old school anime.

I've watched all of yu yu hakusho at least 4 times and now I'm on #5. Honestly the world would be much dimmer without this fantastic show to brighten it.

watched these in the early 2000's and was too young to really understand it but watched anyways. so good to come back and watch them again mostly from nostalgia.
