To be fair, the unfairness and corruption is part of what makes the Dark Tournament one of the greatest tournament arcs in all shonen. Everywhere else, its all fairness and playing by the rules, where here even the very competition itself is against you. (For example, go back a couple episodes and relook at the bracket. Team Toguro gets a bye in the Quarterfinals, which gets shifted into Team Yurameshi having to fight an extra match.)

Concerning this round and "fairness": one of the things that makes the Dark Tournament stand out in anime is the focus on cheating. Aside from our heroes, the only team that doesn't pull some kind of chicanery is TOGURO (you know, the main villains, the guys that usually throw out the rules in tournaments). There's also something in the contrast between the fighters (who have a mix of scumbags and 'honorable' foes) and the team owners, who are uniformly corrupt oligarchs (and I'd even throw Koenma in that description, albeit lightly). Remember, its the OWNERS manipulating the rules and the systems, the fighters are just taking advantage of it.

Kurama can manipulate the plant with his energy. That's why it grew in the shape of a blade to pierce Touya. He "has but to will it", as he said in his very first fight.

The committee really is the hidden opponent in this round. Kurama vs. Touya was a pretty good fight. Both fighters had respect for each other. When Kurama mentioned Touya making his life nobler than him to Touya, it was a reference to Kurama's past as a fox demon. Kurama is very well known among the demons because of his infamous past. You can also see why Jin had disdain for Bakken during the last episode when they determined what the terms of battle were. Bakken is a bit of a low life as we saw in this episode. He wishes to torture Kurama rather than just toss him out of the ring for the easy win. Seems like you are getting pretty invested in this arc. This arc builds up so well.
