Although an interesting theory, teddy bear was my cousin, my pop was out there looking for him during the initial search, and the boys were nowhere near together enough in the head to go looking for CHP offices. Teddy likely wouldn’t even eat food that wasn’t given to him, and when the old house caught fire when he was younger, he didn’t think he was allowed to leave without permission. They were significantly more disabled than you give them credit for.

And that's pretty much all there is to understand. All five of them were of severely diminished capacity and dangerously incapable if in severe trouble. If they would have had a chaperone to look over them and take charge, they would have likely survived. On their own, in a difficult situation, they just didn't have the capability to save themselves. There was more than enough for them to make it one way or another, but they didn't have the capacity to make those choices. Simple enough, no mystery about it. Its only a mystery to people who think everyone is "average".

Yeah. This is one of the weird aspects of the case. The VW guy, older and suffering from heart trouble, has no trouble covering 8miles, but these 5 young basketball players cannot? I get that without knowing the area its possible these young men hiked back and forth in panic for many hours arguing amongst themselves and disoriented, but still common sense would have it that if you simply kept going in one direction you'd likely come across some other car or structure within a days hike of 12hrs (which if snow wasn't high should easily be 10-30miles depending on conditions).
@tomszabo7350
@tomszabo7350 2 жыл бұрын
The heart attack guy walked back down elevation below the snow line. The 5 boys walked further into the mountains. Why walk that way and not try to turn back? Because they had already driven so far, surely there must be a cabin, house or town just ahead. After all, there was the guy in the VW also headed that way, and the road had been freshly plowed. An awful set of coincidences that turned bad judgment into disaster. After a long track, the 5 reach the trailer at Buck Lake and find the road is not plowed further. Damn. Eventually the two healthiest dudes turn back but of course by now even the plowed road has deep snow, and they die of exposure. The other three wait for rescue that never comes, one dies in the trailer and the other two try to forge ahead having assumed the first two who went back did not make it. This whole thing is very similar to what happened to the Dutch girls in Panama ... I'm fairly certain they also perished because they made the mistake of thinking that continuing forward, and then waiting for rescue, was a better choice than trying to backtrack. Lesson here for search strategies: look much further than it seems possible that somebody could end up.

Great information, especially on the mapping. I don’t really think that they would have had the thought process of going to all these California highway patrols. However, I do have a theory that’s simpler. I believe that they went home the way they always did, this wasn’t a first trip for them to Chico and back, so they knew the route . And like so many people do, the driver missed the exit that forks off to Yuba City, and took the Oroville one. Once they, they just got lost and started going up the hill into the forest. They got out to look for help and got lost. By the way- check out more on Shones - he’s a man with a criminal past and all kinds of sketch.

Gotta say no to this one. Joseph Shone (The dude who had a heart attack and owner of the VW) was said to be a drunk and compulsive liar by his ENTIRE town. His testimony changed 5 times total. There's also no telling what time the CHP closed nearly 40 years ago just because they close at 5 now. Also there is no way the window wouldn't have been rolled up. The owner LOVED that car. Something had to have chased them away I think they did something at the game or gas station that made the people in the red truck upset. The red truck dudes chased them up the hill, tried to whistle for them to come back when they realized the boys took off into the woods, they never came back out of fear. 3 separate witnesses confirmed the red truck

I appreciate your angle on this, I enjoy getting other perspectives on this story. However, there are a lot of bizarre things surrounding the events of heart attack man, that no matter how you apply them it just doesn’t make sense. In my opinion, there is something sinister that had to have occurred on their way home. They had no reason to go up the mountain on their own. Add to that - heart attack man’s story doesn’t add up. We will probably never know the real story and events that took place that night. Anyhow thanks again for the video. 😊

This is one of the best videos out there on this mystery. Especially the time taken to put together the map visuals...everyone else uses small and hard to see diagrams. I, too, like the theory that the boys drove up under their own free will and not under duress. However, they saw their mission as life or death. I can't get over the car window being left down, but the keys being found with the driver. My theory: they picked up a female hitchhiker and were trying to get her home with her baby. I believe at least that much of the VW driver's testimony...

@@degrelleholt6314 I've wondered a lot about that. The location was rife with drifters, hippies, and even cultists - if it was a woman trying to get up there via hitch hiking, she very well may have belonged to one of these groups and moreover probably wasn't native to California. Maybe some midwestern girl trying to move out to California to make it big and got caught up with a bad crowd? Just speculation and probably wildly inaccurate. Are there data-bases from that far back that would provide a national list of missing women and/or nursing mothers? I doubt it. There's so much here we'll just never know...

An interesting video with some plausible ideas. One hitch, though - I went to Chico State and have traveled/fished/camped/hiked the Plumas National Forest extensively over the years. The decision to travel to Quincy to find a CHP office could only have been based on complete and total ignorance of the local geography by all 5 of the men. Even Hwy 70 (Oroville to Quincy), assuming this is the road they intended to take, is a VERY windy road that would also take them in the opposite direction from Yuba City. Chico and Yuba City are a much shorter drive from Oroville, both have CHP offices, and both are much larger towns than Quincy.

Thats a good point and we shouldnt assume they were the same as in 1978. However I dont think it detracts from the overall argument that much. WHY the boys went up the road that night is ultimately just pure speculation and its entirely possible that they were still trying to get to Quincy for a reason as simple as what is suggested. Once they go up the road the rest of the events probably transpired very closely to how its described in the video.

But if it snowed the day after the Montego was found (Sunday--delaying the start of the search), would not the forestry service have gone back up to the tailers to remove the snow again from the flat roofs and discovered our missing gentlemen? And you said yourself that there being five of them; why didn't they just get out and push the car out of the slippery spot? Two of the guys were in the Amry--they would have recognized dehydrated food when they saw it. I was in the service and the Scouts, and I know freeze dried food (especially if it's marked on the box) when I see it. The best explanation I have seen is from a gentleman who has worked with mentally challenged people: the MH/MR make very bad decisions when put into stress situations. But I doubt they were looking for the CHP. Why? Do you know what may have happened that they would do this? Because of the phantom woman with the baby? What happened to her? I think there's some good info in your guess at this, but also a lot of supposition.
@Scott_Terry

I'm torn between two theories. On the one hand, I like the theory that they went up there on their own, probably to help a hitchhiker; but then, why inexplicably leave the car and never return to it? On the other hand, we do have at least two confessions as to murder, one close to the time of the searches (after which, the man who confessed died the next day of apparent suicide by drug overdose), and the other from a preacher who was confessing his sins in front of his congregation (one sin being: murder of Gary M...a confession which lined up with the other confession from years earlier). But then, if this version is true, Gary died at the dam and the boys were inexplicably forced up the road and into the woods. So how would Gary's shoes have made their way to the cabin? Why would they take the keys with them but never return to the car? Too many loose ends on this theory...

@@degrelleholt6314 Mopac Audio and Glassbox Media recently did an in-depth podcast on the Yuba County 5 where the producers went back and found many of the original family members who were still alive or who knew the 5 personally. They dug up old, scratchy, audio of the guy who supposedly had a heart-attack in his car (he sounded shady for sure), as well as some of the police involved in the search. It was fascinating. They also let slip little factoids like: not only were Gary's shoes found in the cabin, they found little notes there actually written by Gary! The podcast says the notes were "lost" then never follows up on them. I thought that was huge, so I did some digging: turns out, they were probably little pre-written motivational / inspirational notes Gary kept with him, so - the mystery continues. Are his shoes and those notes evidence he made it to the cabin? Maybe. Maybe not... The podcast isn't on youtube, but if you google "Yube County Five Podcast" you'll find the Mopac Audio version. ...and me recommending that podcast isn't meant to take away from this particular video, which I still think is very well done.

I mean, for one thing you're supposed to report large roadkill (deer for example) or debris (lost tires, hubcaps, etc) to the highway patrol office and I've known that since I was a kid. There were no cell phones back then, just popping over to an office would've been the best way to report something. Just because nobody taught _you_ laws doesn't mean the rest of us were left behind.

Although your theory has some elements that seem possibly plausible, this video leaves out a ton of information. No offense, but there are much much better in depth videos out there that go into much greater detail of the events surrounding this mysterious situation. That all being said, I too think that the answers are more along the lines of some kind of Occam‘s razor, and that I doubt foul play was involved. I’ve heard other people bring up the possibility of the car having issues as they were known to be temperamental. I think there’s a good possibility of that coming into play. Some people like to belabor the fact that the car still had gas, and then it started up when it was hot wired but that doesn’t mean that during the moment that night, it did have trouble starting up. Why the men decided to walk further up the mountain, as opposed to going back to where they had just driven from is very strange to me. Also, the whole encounter with the man in the VW is almost like a red herring, as he is such an unreliable narrator. Who knows what he saw, and what he didn’t see and what truly happened with him that night. He had been drinking and had a heart attack. Who knows. Was he involved in someway? Possibly. But he was also known to be quite the liar and a big mouth who liked attention. Again, there’s a whole lot more to this story that can be done justice in a 12 minute video. There’s a six part podcast that covers this story in much greater detail. I highly recommend listening to it.

Oh man... I like the attempt at somewhat simplifying the case to make it more digestable but there were so many errors and wrong assumptions, Jesus... also I find it incredibly disrespectful to reduce these 5 men to just their supposed disability/illness. They were much more than just "the guy with schizophrenia" or "the guy with the learning disability" .... for all I know you could as well have called them "retarded"... the way you did it isn't much more respectful.

Umm... Your narration is so bad that I'm thinking you could easily be the "sixth man" in the Yuba City Five. If you're going to try and produce an upload, at least give it an honest try... This has to be a joke...
