Yuba FastRack Review Short

While attending the (e)revolution electric bike show in Denver Colorado, I got to connect with Yuba to learn more about their FastRack electric bike. Initially, I thought it was called the Fast Track because of the many rack systems (front, rear, and custom sideboards that fold up to create a platform or down out of way). It's a midtail electric cargo bike with the Shimano E7000 mid-drive motor that offers up to 60nm of torque and is known for being light, efficient, and quiet. Tim explained that the bike can support a rider and two children, or two adult passengers, and can handle up to 440lbs maximum load which is way above average. The bike has fenders, integrated lights, a suspension fork, a folding rear platform rack, and can be stood up onto the back end to store vertically as well as rolled around in the vertical position! The handlebar can fold 90-degrees so it doesn't take as much space in the upright position. Like most of their other ebikes, the FastRack works with child seats, a surround bar, passenger pad, and is sold online and through independent electric bike shops. Unlike the Spicy Curry, that we looked at in another video, this model can only work with a single battery pack vs. two.

This looks great as a kid hauler and/or urban car replacement for a couple. Closest competitor might be the upcoming Tern HSD Gen 2? I know people often complain about the cost of higher end e-bikes but when you factor in the utility of a cargo bike and low cost of ownership vs a car (no insurance, no gas, no title and registration fees, no oil changes, cheaper consumables like tires, free parking, etc.) it starts to make a lot of sense. I know parents love zipping up to school on one of these and skipping a lengthy pickup and drop off line of idling cars.

Tern has done a wonderful job innovating in the cargo ebike space. Their upright stand concept, the accessories, and the reliability of their drive systems and builds has made them the first choice in many ways. Seeing this Yuba competitor was refreshing, and I think it confirms many of the good decisions they've made. I'm excited for it :)

Oh yeah, this would make for a great delivery ebike platform. I love the adjustable stem, seat post, and suspension fork for rough city environments.

Wow! this one's a gem. I really hope u can do a proper review of this bike in the field, ...loaded up. I love the practical details in the frame design especially regarding storage, security & how it's super easy to swop out the chain for a belt. Best rack system design I've ever seen, ...by a mile!! Also loving the Shimano drive system, which doesn't see a lot of use in the cargo space, except with Xtracycle nowadays. For me, this beats the socks off any bike in its class from Tern or R&M by the look of it. Much cheaper too.

Hey there! I’m hoping you can answer a question! How can you easily swap a chain for a belt? That is one of the factors that’s making me lean towards other options. I currently don’t have the money for a belt drive system (I’m a full time student) but I want a belt drive really bad. So I’m planning on waiting to upgrade in the future and keep my extremely low en ebike. But if I can buy this bike and use it for a few years and then switch it to a belt drive it would be literally perfect for me. Are you sure this is feasible?

Hi @@carterdeyoung1060 . This bike frame's rear design connects with the rear hub from above. This means that a regular bicycle chain does not have to be broken to install or to be replaced. U can look at [9:49] to compare this bike frame to regular frames. The chain does not loop through the frame. On most belt drive frames there would be a break in the rear of the frame, close to the rear hub, to allow for installing and replacing the belt drive. This is because belts are generally a closed loop that (in most cases) cannot be broken/opened to be installed or serviced. Because of this design choice on the Yuba FastRack the bike's chain or belt can be removed, serviced or replaced without breaking the chain or the bike frame (for belts). So this process would be relatively quick & easy. There are other bikes with a similar approach ie. the R&M Nevo, Tinker , Birdy & a few other brands too.

Would this be something most experienced bike shops would be able to do if I requested it after owning the bike for a few years? I see how putting a belt on could work, but would it be possible for the average shop to have the personal to actually replace the system and it run smoothly? Thanks again for any help!

@@carterdeyoung1060 Yes. It's much easier with this type of frame. Most folx can do it themselves. You can lookup info/videos about belt drive bicycle conversions if there's anything you do not completely understand.

Yet another Tern GSD compeititor, imitation is highest form of flattery. If planning to go head to head with GSD should've use 85nm E8000 motor, E7000 is better suited to gentler terrain if carrying heavy loads on regular basis.
