I think in the Manga Yugi actually used Gaia, Kuriboh, and Griffore because they represented Light & Darkness(weird BS) to summon Black Luster Soldier. The TCG card Super Soldier Ritual is a reference to this.

Black luster was the best man-like hologram of the show. Magician of chaos is also pretty good design, both almost identical, is like the same man in a different armor

Some lore for enjoyers: Black Luster Soldier is simply called "Chaos Soldier" in Japan, thus him and Magician of Black Chaos are the only "Chaos" monsters that were shown at the time, which explains their similar looks/clothing. Also Gaia is literally Black Luster Soldier, he is simply Gaia infused with chaos energy (same for Dark Magician and Magician of Black Chaos). This was later shown in the new "Super Soldier" cards. While little Yugi had Dark Magician as his "Spirit Card" (or Ka in Japan), pharaoh Atem had Black Luster Soldier, this was later shown in the last arc of Duel Monsters when they go back to ancient egypt.

I heard an opinion on a YT channel and I think he was right. He said that he thinks in the original Yu-Gi-Oh duel monsters series, that ritual monsters arent monsters in the hand, but instead in the extra deck. Like, you only need the ritual spell to summon the monster, as the ritual monster was in the extra deck. I think that is something thats very possible. Also, I think that would fix 99% of ritual decks if that was the case. Make a Ritual deck spot next to the extra deck and most ritual monsters would become much easier to summon.

I think it had something to do with how back in the day, the extra deck was known as the fusion deck and only contained fusion monster cards. Ritual monsters, on the other hand, didn't actually require any specific monsters to be used, unlike fusions, which back then each had a specific pair of cards necessary to play them, so I guess they must've thought that ritual monsters needed to be distinct somehow. But I still think it was mostly due to the extra deck being the fusion deck (I know I mentioned this twice)

That card references it all: Thousand-Eyes Restrict being forced to inhale Kuriboh instead of Magician of Black Chaos via its effect to equip itself to an opponent's monster if it activates an effect, and the part where the Kuriboh explode, blinding Thousand-Eyes Restrict and rendering its paralyzing stare powerless via its effect to negate the equipped monster's effects. Not exactly the best card, but I do love the nostalgic touches it brings to the game!

My guess is it was a balancing thing. Rituals would be comparatively easier to summon than fusions. Since you can use any monsters matching the star level vs specific named monsters. So they added the restriction of them being in the regular deck. Otherwise they probably thought it would be too strong for the time? Or why would people bother with fusion in that case? Then again, it seems like it would just be much easier at the time to use something like Blue Eyes in both cases.
