I am an Emmy Award winning recording engineer. First, Yamaha: This is a quite reasonable piano. I agree with you all on the microphone placement. In all cases a decent piano (any of the major brands) requires a Master Piano Technician to set up, regulate and voice the instrument. Here, I am not referring to a piano tuner, but to a member of the Piano Guild as a Master Tech. I feel so sorry for the masses who pay out serious amounts of money on pianos expecting their pedigree branded piano to have the overall sound, touch, sustain and rock solid tuning completed to the same degree as expected by the world's most distinguished concert artists. I see $ 200,000 pianos that sound dull with a heavy touch and sloppy key return. Certainly not the pianos fault nor the musician. The average person has no conception of the process to "fine tune" any piano to the standards one would expect in a Formula One racing machine or a jet aircraft engine! During the Tchaikovsky Moscow Conservatory competition this year, 2019, on the stage, the pianist had the option to perform and select from 5 makes of instruments. Fazioli, HAMBURG Steinway, Yamaha, Shigeru Kawai and a new comer to my amazement Yangtze River (yes China!) Imagine the stage at the Moscow Conservatory, the stage that has seen the best of the best pianists. BTW, the fourth place winner Mr. An Tianxu performed on the Yangtze River. Yamaha was the third alternate brand to be placed on the prestigious Moscow stage after FAZIOLI, where Steinway of course was first. In my various conversations with Paolo Fazioli concerning the Moscow Conservatory Yamaha specifically, he told me it was a fine instrument, but, you cant purchase one! I imagine the same to be true for the Yangtze River. Remember that the great Saviatoslav Richter performed on Yamaha for most of his life. So, in the right hands (piano technicians) an instrument can indeed be optimized to extract the most from the physical instrument itself. Next comes the artistry of the musician. This is where the "secrets" are kept. Only the ultimate professionals will be able to make a true instrument sing. So, while I have personal preferences in manufacturers for various reasons, this Yamaha does not deserve the rude and unfortunate comments below. For the average non professional musician, most pianos even on a "B" list level, and this would include budget priced pianos from Korea and China, are better instruments than the musical proficiency the musician. Yes , the microphone placement on this Yamaha is horrible for any "classical" compositions. Finally, the 2019 Tchaikovsky Moscow Competition again from a technical perspective is exceptionally well produced, both from the sound quality and HD camera work. It may be viewed in replay FREE here: tch16.medici.tv/en/replay/#filter?instrument=piano

Everyone knows the film "An Immoral Offer" with Robert Redford and Demi Moore. Let's make Miss Wang an offer: Her fans raise $1 million via crowd-funding. If Ms Wang plays the piano naked at Carnegie Hall, she gets $1 million, - tax free. I think she'd do it. ist etwas exhibitionistisch, sie liebt das Geld und sie liebt die Aufmerksamkeit des Publikums. She's a bit of an exhibitionist, she loves the money and she loves the attention of the audience.

She is a very capable pianist. However, I have to agree with those who find this version more of a showy technical performance rather than an expression of the piece with feeling. There is playing the piano and there making music. Horowitz showed those who are able to perceive this distinction how it could be achieved.

I either hate that piano, or I hate the mic placement. Or maybe both. I'm pretty sure Yuja was fine though.

I’m no sound engineer, but the audio in this recording is unbearable. The mic placement is probably half to blame for why this sounds so mechanical. What a loss. :(

lovely dancing melody. a bit jarred at points for my mistrained ears. I can't ever understand the need to suddenly change from a wonderful melody into a barrage of monster chords. although it is wonderful to again hear the dancing melody return. unbalanced is probably the word but then again maybe not. still wonderful playing.

她做我真高兴我是华人! Impeccable technique she carries with her indeed. However, some more immersion in emotion conveyed in the playing with more elegance will suit her better. Certainly better pianist than the other Chinese (LL) whose playing carries excessive showdown of facial exaggeration. The sound engineer's work in this video is substandard, though. The placement of mike severely tilt the balance of relative loudness the piano strings produce towards the upper register. Ces't la vie...
