I gotta say, when I heard this for the first time as a kid -- I think it was Francescatti and Casadesus. Man, I thought, Beethoven can weave a theme or motif into the soul of any musical form and almost like magic, you feel everything like it was so real and palpable in your mind and ears, but it ends like a dream. You don't remember anything about it except the crushing weight of emotion that just left you.

I've been listening to the Kreutzer for 50 years now, starting with Francescatti/Casadesus, and this performance is as good as any I have ever heard. Tremendous freshness and energy, not to mention accuracy. And though most of the attention here has centered on the pianist, I think Bell's performance was also terrific (even with the calisthenics).

In my opinion this piece is a Beethoven comic classic. The variations are satirical and the whole work is mock tragic. Over the top works in my opinion.
@normagilpin78413 жыл бұрын
I guess we all have our opinions, but to say attention "centered on the pianist" seems laughable. If anything, many times when both were playing and the camera was focused on Bell, it should have been directed at both Bell AND Wang! Also, personally, I saw a little TOO much of Bell and his wild physical gyrations! Thank goodness Wang didn't jerk her body from one end of the piano to the other during her performance. It seems as though Mr. Bell didn't really want to be 1/2 of this performance - he'd have been pleased to have the camera focused entirely on himself! [Maybe have the pianist actually BEHIND the curtain! ;-) ]

A fiery performance played with the dynamics that Beethoven I am sure would have liked. The accuracy and the tempos allow the brilliance of the piece to show through. Few musicians could achieve this level of performance at these tempos.. My favorite performance of this Sonata is by Gidon Kremer and Martha Argerich .Kremer has a smoother way of playing than Bell and Argerich plays with great accuracy and sensitivity. But make no mistake ,this performance is as rousing as any I have heard

I'm in a group of several people listening this time. Someone with a more acute ear than I have just got it, I think. The difference between JB's melody is that it stays in your mind as a violin singing to you with its bow, whereas with Perlman or Heifetz it's almost a human voice singing Beethoven to you as he might have thought the melody in his mind before putting pen to paper. very few violinists can do it. that is very profound
