That last movement.. wow! Really like the timing and tempo changes. All done very homogeneously and so convincing.

I always had the impression that this piece is mainly a part of the great clarinet repertoire of the 20th century. Just now I reconsider

My son is a second semester university music ed. major. He's also playing on that BD5 mouthpiece. He really likes it. He has met Mr. Frost backstage after a concert by the St. Paul Minnesota Chamber Orchestra. He and his university studio were photographed with him. Like meeting Mozart......

Although this kind of music is not my cup of tea, I'm glad to see Ms. Wang is willing to step out of the traditional classical groove. I often wonder if she ever improvises; solo or with other musicians. If she could get comfortable with it, Yuja Wang's prodigious talent could possibly go to great highths with jazz improvisation.

I am a great Yuja admirer. However, I think improvisation is a relative weakness, and she is not a natural jazz musician. Of all the concertos she plays, for instance, I think her weakest is Rhapsody in Blue where she is faithful to the score, but fails to inject any of the swing element you feel from the best performances. While Bartok is not everyone's cup of tea, it is modern classical rather than jazz. Yuja interprets it well. Her playing is very orthodox, but that is fine.

@@timothybolshaw I don’t see improvisation as a weakness at all. To me, the immediacy and individuality of improvisation makes it more of an art form than classical, where the musician is more of an artisan bringing someone else’s idea to light. Either way, both forms of creating music come from such different places that comparisons aren’t fair to either one.

@@ralphaverill2001 You misunderstand me if you think I undervalue improvisation. I absolutely do not. My comment was that it is not one of Yuja's strengths. Yuja is at her best when interpreting pieces composed by others which she has studied and thought about deeply. She generally shows great integrity, and total respect for the composers she is interpreting. We seem to be in complete agreement about the nature of improvisation, which I see as composition on the fly. Based on your earlier comment, I think you see jazz as the musical genre where first class improvisation is most often met with, and I am inclined to agree, though you can find excellent exponents in rock, classical and most other genres on occasion.
