It's fascinating to watch a speedrun of a game that is purposefully designed to simply wander around in and get lost in and find your own meaning to. I don't mean this as an insult, of course, doing a speedrun of any game means the runner most likely dearly loves that game. But there's something fascinating about blazing through a game built to take your time in. I suppose it's really cool you even can do it so quickly! It's not so much that you're rushing to get it over with, but more that the runner must know the entire world of Yume Nikki with such familiarity, that they CAN rush through it. Awesome video!

(sorry that's a really long comment lol) this girl is an antisocial and never wants to go outside, she only plays video games in her room or sleep She walks around in her dreams and nightmares to find object from her past life (childhood joy / traumas) and from her imagination, just to feel alive It is her only goal in her life since she is a social reject When she has found everything in her dreams, she has nothing left to do, except exploring her dreams again with nothing to look for. She can still play at her only game on her TV, but it is super boring and it has no point She searched a reason to keep living in her dreams, with her imagination and things from her past life She founds funny things, creepy things, which were keeping her busy. But with time, she saw that these funny things were in fact pointless and useless, her life had still no meaning Since she explored everything and only came back with useless objects, she had nothing left to do so she commited suicid, because even her dreams were becoming as boring as her room her dreams symbolize things, and sometimes they dont (because these are dreams... they dont always have a meaning) The biggest things we can understand from the protagonist are her fear from others : everyone in this game is in a way hostile to her. They ignore her or attack her. In a world with plants, some girls are doing a party but the protagonist cant go with them, she is blocked by her own world. In an other world, into a corridor, when she tries to interract with normal people, they scream and run away from her. This means that the protagonist has trouble making friends. This girl has no friends and that makes her sad. She is alone in the real world so she is in her dreams We also notice a lot of eyes into the whole game, because her lack of sociability makes her feel like she is always being judged by others, because they found her weird. You are incredibly alone in this game but you are constantly being observed by walls, the floor, monsters... She is anxious about the real world and that's why she never go out There is also an optionnal place, when the protagonist goes on Mars alone. She is alone from another universe... And there are a lot of others theories about the protagonist and her world (there are theories about sexual assault, about the death of her family, about mental illness... I dont believe in every of these theories but it is another interpretation of the game which are interesting. There is interpretation about the game being a reflection of Kikiyama the creator... a looot of theories can be made easily, but for me, if there is a true one for sure, that is the theory of her loneliness) A lot of worlds could simply be traumas from her childhood. Poniko becoming Uboa could simply be her imaginary friend becoming scary when it is time to sleep in the dark (Uboa send the protagonist in an infinite sea, that could symbolize her drowning into her fear when she imagines monsters in the dark) There is a lot of strange draws in the style of Picasso in her dreams. She maybe is just scared of this art-style Or maybe she likes it, and that's why it's everywhere ! There are a lot of interpretation to makes But anyway ! For a last little resume : the protagonist is an anti-social girl which suffer from her loneliness, her dreams are the only things that are keeping her alive, but when she explored every places of her mind, she has no goal anymore and has been in confrontation with the good part of her imagination (neon world, flying like a witch, the Mars universe) but also the bad part of her mind (her loneliness and the fact that her life has no point, just like this world). she got through all her traumas and cant handle it, so she commits suicid and sleeps forever But, there is a secret ending : the protagonist commit suicid in her dream and it makes her wake up in real life. She doesnt die. She goes out of her bed and for the first time in the game, she manages to go outside of her room. She handled her past and got over it, she has the hope of finding a meaning to her life and she is willing to fight her loneliness sorry for the long comment !

But really... Yume Nikki is pure experience enough for you to really make it your own. It's level of conceptual surrealism is such that... What spoilers could be the people talking about? All the readings of Kikiyama work is subjective. Every single element was demonized by the public, at ridiculous levels. And you know what..? That only made this game more popular. When I played it in my time it was not very well known outside the English-speaking world, almost a rarity. Now it's an icon of indie terror. That.. can make shallow fans, poser players... And that generates the purist protectors of the game. Which group ends up being more toxic?
