Not gonna lie, by process of elimination Yumichika has to be the one who does the paperwork. Kenpachi definitely doesn’t care to do it, Yachiru was 9 times outta 10 either goofing off or just with Kenny as he fights people. Ikkaku emulates his captain in being somebody who doesn’t care about paperwork and only ever wants to fight. Yumichika is the only one I can see being responsible enough to actually do it.

It even said that, i don't exactly remember where, Lisa who elected as captain after the war wanted him as her lieutenant but he turned down that offer. He's also responsible and pretty level headed when he's not being petty. Obviously he's probably not gained bankai yet but I'd wager the potential is there for him to be very strong if he was to learn it.

Personal canon is that Yunichika didnt necessarily pretend to be dumb, but that he was limiting himself to fit into his Squad whose members all consider kido to be weakest and most cowardly way of fighting. Because of this limiter, he wasn't able to express his kido and reiatsu based talents before, which made him comically weak compared to rest of the cast, but as he got more comfortable with his position and trust in his fellow squadmates grew, he started to express his powers, leading Yumichika to look "smart" compared to what he was before.

No this is not your head canon. It IS the canon. His zampakto is a kido based zampakto however since when activating his shikai he always calls it the wrong name on purpose which gives us the fan looking sickles. However his true release shoots tendrils that wraps around the enemy and will drain their reiatsu and heal him until the enemies die. He refuses to show his true shikai because he will not fit in with the rest of the squad and he just wants to hang out with his meathead bros above all else.

I don't think that's personal canon. There's a three pieces of evidence to suggest he's always downplaying himself. The zanpacto name, the squad rank, and the fact he was able to release his zanpacto w a different name on purpose means he must know more than the average soup realer because weve only seen that with renji. And ohetsu has to tell him that he didn't know it's name. Also, I think how op his zanpacto is a give away too.

Kido proficiency can be a sign of intelligence. A kido based zanpakuto or any complex power requires more intelligence to wield than a direct melee type. He was always meant to be a smart character

They've had some pretty good displays here against enemies even the captain's are struggling with. They, alongside Hisagi, managed to defeat and kill base Mask DeMasquline who was causing trouble for Renji and eventually defeated Kensei and Rose and not only did the two of them manage to do decent damage against zombie Bambietta (Bambi one shot Shinji and originally dominated Komamura) they also managed to fend off zombie Hitsugaya's ambush for a bit and he basically one shot Mayuri 10 times or whatever time travel shenanigans. Bleach feats for Ikkaku and Yumichika put them ahead of a lot of lieutenants and TYBW puts them against enemies that have one shot very powerful captains. They've done well to make it this far.

Sure the fight against Ganju was goofy but in the same arc he fought and defeated Hisagi by using his true shikai without people noticing and Vs Charlotte he was smart enough to work out that he wouldn't be found out using his shikai Vs her in that black hole area. He's also kinda smart in the Ikkaku flashback, being the person who just kinda always spoke sense. It's not surprise that he's not only smart but also competent in a lot of different fighting styles including kido. It's more surprising that he actually uses kido in this arc and was about to use his true shikai against zombie Hitsugaya before getting KO'd. I wonder how effective his shikai would be against Hitsugaya honestly, it seems like the kind of weapon with very little in the way of limits.

He got beaten by Ganju because 1. Ganju is ugly, 2. Ganju is not a shinigami, and 99% of Rukon citizens does not have specialized training, 3. Yumichika severely underestimated him. If he took Ganju seriously since the beginning he would have won very, very easily. Yumichika fuck around and found out that Ganju is much better than he thought.

0:21 The reason it's a screaming match is because Yumichika almost never uses his real abilities. He's always hiding his true Shikai (he used it once in ~380 episodes, against Charlotte in the fight to protect the fake Karakura town's pillars) and he actually doesn't blindly follow orders, unlike some other Shinigami (e.g. Renji in the beginning). He's also devoted to the 11th squad's fighting style: goof around while fighting to make it as fun as possible.

Id say he's always been smart too. He just downplays himself, it's part of his character. He lies to his zanpacto about the name just cause she doesn't like it and it makes him weaker. He's the 5th seat when he should be the 4th because he doesn't like the number. So from the start he shows a high zanpacto intelligence and also shows a lot of sleight of hand. Half his fights are happening before the swords are ever drawn. He's really an underappreciated Character. Me and my brother til this day debate about how strong he really is. Yumichika is smart and tactical NOW because he got fucked over by trying to be like other people in his squad (physical bravado) and taunting. He can be more himself as a tactically intelligent person while remaining sassy by embracing his experiences and brain more in combat. But we see in his fight with Shuhei that he’s smart and tricky and able to overwhelm another skilled lieutenant; but he does it with his true shikai. The same with his fight with Charlotte, once they’re isolated, the gloves come off. He’s plenty smart and tactical but he’s hiding it all the time. Most of the time he’s hiding it to complement the image of the squad 11 attitude or he’s with ikkaku or zaraki and follows their lead. What I think this actually was was character development. He’s slowly becoming more comfortable using his cunning and intelligence in battle even in front of his squadmates.

Yumichika is a man playing a role and that role is just to be a member of Squad 11. He won't even use his Shikai in a serious manner because it's not fit for the role and that's probably why he does the bare minimum, even during life of death matches. He told Charlotte that if he hadn't encased him in total darkness, there's a great chance he would've just accepted death and welcomed it. But he's coming around to finding that his friends will accept him for who he is and what his powers are. If he sticks to his current mentality, there's a good chance he'll never reveal if he has a Bankai because it will definitely be a Kido type
