Went to a pet store where only 1 bird was kept clipped. He was a rescue and he had a special habitat behind the counter and they said they clipped his wings for 2 main reasons. He was as beautiful and had as lovely a singing voice as he was viscious. He had attacked customers, birds, and pets people brought in including dogs, cats, and ferrets. And he was a notorious thief. He would steal anything that made interesting noises. Including car keys, squeaky toys, and once the bell collar right off a cat.
@toysruskid50742 жыл бұрын
I don't know what breed he was, but he was a bright yellow with some white and he was quite large. Over a foot from head to claw. He had an on again off again GF (another rescue who couldn't fly well due to a not quite right wing.) He wanted nothing to do with the few offspring he produced - even when they were brought to visit their mom by their owners, but she was a sweetheart who would loved to be petted but.... sadly sang terribly and rambled about coconuts.

@@dragonfly9821 I drove by the pet store the other day, but it was a lawnmower store. I guess the pandemic closed it? Maybe it closed before then.... I really can't tell you if they made any progress on his behavior, but I can tell you that while the female bird didn't fly well, she could fly well enough to choose when she wanted to visit him and was free to explore the store at night. I doubt they ever intentionally "bred" him. He didn't seem like the cooperative type.

They free fly around my room all day and seem very happy. They are aboit 6 now, sadly the first passed away, I can only asume old age. They eat only seeds which sucks but I add pellets to it to try to get him to eat them, and I have lots of toys for him. I wanted to tell you that your bird content actually really helped me with his care. I started using pellets because of you, and I’ll get some natural perches too. My budgie escaped her carrier when she was outside. She has paralyzed feet, neurological issues, and she's albino. Luckily, she is outdoor recall trained so when I found her 9 blocks away, (2 hours later) she came when called with no treat or lewers required! Even thought she's not bonded to me. She IS hand tame but bonded to my dog, not me or my other budgies or cockateil. ( it's a long story) basically once she lost the strength in her feet the other birds started to pick on her she when to my dog (trained to protect the birds from my 5 cats) she preens him, and regurgitates food to him.

I'm personally someone who went from being in the clipping camp to the no clipping camp. For me the main thing that convinced is my cockatiel Corrin. He was clipped when we got him so we kept getting it done for the first.... maybe year? But he kept constantly breaking blood feathers because they would grow in without protection and when he startled himself he would try to fly, slamming his wings into things a lot. We decided for him own safety to let him grow his wings out and I think it was the best decision we made. It took him a while to learn how to fly and still isn't comfortable with it all the time (I think his wings were clipped before he learned how to), but even though he still freaks out and flies occasionally it is much safer and more controlled, with him running into things much more rarely and he hasn't broken a blood feather in a couple years now. He likes to fly to me while I'm gaming on my computer and perch on my arm, it's adorable.

Regarding flying, my baby flies around the house, and I swear, that moment when your birb flies to you is just such a magical and joyful moment. In addition to recall training like you mention, there are harnesses you can get for your bird. My parrotlet doesn't tolerate it, but I think it's because she's not a baby anymore and I sort of missed the ideal training age. Leathers 4 Feathers is where I got her harness, and I will probably do that again for any future birds I adopt.

I took in a 24 year old cockatiel about 5 months ago; I’m his fourth home and the last family he was with had him for about 15 years. When I got him he hadn’t been out of his cage in the last two years so he was pretty antisocial and territorial. But just in the last three weeks or so he’s really turned around and spends a few hours on my shoulder a night now! He’s like a whole new bird and every day he gets a little more comfortable with me! He loves playing with my necklaces and he even let me scritch his head once! His name is Earl and I love him so much!

I love that you're able to make them happier around humans. My family adopted some cockatiels when I was young. They'd been raised by an abusive household (don't know how so, but they hated humans). One, Boots, tended towards flight. The other, Missy, chose to fight. Boots died too early for me to remember him well. It involved seizures or something. Missy lived until I was 9 or 10. I remember sitting outside with her for as long as my young ADHD child brain could handle. I remember giving her tiny pancakes whenever we had sleepovers. I remember loving her, and I hope from the bottom of my heart that we made those scared, lonely birds as happy as they could've been with us. I have another cockatiel now named Mittens. I adopted him from a family that couldn't raise him anymore. He lights up my heart with joy, and I think he feels the same about me. As I'm writing this, he's preening himself on my knee. I hope I'm treating him the opposite of how Missy and Boots were treated.

on the topic of wing clipping, some vets will just do it by default on any bird. I went to rehab for a month and when I came home, I was horrified to see that one of my young hens' wings had been clipped during a routine vet appointment. I was furious. Chickens aren't even capable of full flight to begin with! And yet, it's so normalized to clip birds' wings that the vet tech did it to her anyway. It took her almost a year to molt the clipped primaries and grow new ones in :(

You haven't witnessed the erratic behaviour of my aunt's cockatiel. He talks back. He picked up on his owner telling their dog (he passed away a few years ago) to go eat. And he would stress the dog and tell him to go eat. He learnt how to say something similar to "what's up!" (he's an Italian speaking bird) and often tells this to strangers or once to my aunt. And it also sounds pretty aggressive. Like he's pissed off or something. If you either leave him alone or leave him alone with a stranger he starts to scream like crazy. I remember eating lunch at my aunt's and she would get up to grab something and he would scream anxious she was leaving. Mind you she was in the same room. He did grow up though with music. And loves to listen to it to calm himself down. If either leaves for a long time they leave some music for him to relax to. There's even a song he likes to bop his head and dance. Also he has learnt to imitate different sounds. Like his owner's drinking. Or I remember my aunt cracking an egg and him hitting his beek on the cage to imitate the sound. Btw I have a recoding of him saying his name and calling his owner repeatedly. It's very funny. Most of the time he speaks gibberish. Almost as if he was to complain or be mad. But he was taught to say his name and how are you doing as a greet. Except he lost the verb "I am" and never says this. Or barely

It's a shame that the lost cockatiel ended up dying, but at least his family know what happened to him so they can properly grieve. Also it is kinda weird to see comments like "my pet died today 😭" on happy/funny pet videos. As for comments about pet deaths on videos where someone talks about their pet passing away, I think they can be okay as long as it is written in a respectful way. Like obviously don't elaborate on the details of your pet's demise, but there's nothing wrong with sharing that you have lost a pet too, and that you can understand and empathize with whoever made the video. Everyone experiences loss and grief differently, and we should try to be considerate when commenting about this subject.

Wing clipping should be banned. It means birds can get serious injuries from falling, get stepped on, have no means of escape from danger. They also get frustrated and stressed from having a basic natural behaviour taken away from them. They also can't get enough exercise and have a higher chance of becoming obese and suffering from heart problems and fatty tumors. PLEASE, birds are NOT toys, treat them with respect and DO NOT CLIP their wings. It's basically crippling them... it's not healthy for them, and it's not natural. If you don't want a pet that can fly DON'T get a bird!!!!

Cockatiels are the best, I've been recovering from losing my pearl cockatiel, skylar, months, maybe even a year or two ago. I'm deciding between adopting a blue Indian ring neck or a white and grey cockatiel (sorry, I don't know the name) I think I'll choose the cockatiel I vow to give whichever bird I choose, the best life I can. They will have 2 cages, one that Is too small for my liking (but it's only for nightimes) and one that is more of an aviary that would be a pretty huge area. It is so difficult to give parrots proper care in my country, especially since they only really sell cotton rope toys and dowel perches and the fact that I life on a farm that's far from a town, but I will try. And yes, I have been researching for years now, and I won't be stopping any time soon. I will not fail this bird like I have my past cockatiel. Cockatiels are truly something Have a great day (Advice on choosing between the Indian ring neck or the white and grey cockatiel would be great, thank you❤)

I know that for me, sometimes I’ll say stuff like “oh, your dog died today? I’m so sorry, my dog died four years ago and it sucked” (not this bad, but close) I usually do it to show I’m relating to you and I understand what you’re going through. It’s never to make it about me, but I can see how it can easily be taken that way. Apparently it’s a neurodivergent thing 🤷♀️ I try to make sure that’s the only thing I mention about me, because I’m aware, but some aren’t.

I'd like a bird in theory, but I know me and I know I wouldn't be able to give the bird the kind of attention it would need. My lifestyle is suited for a pair of old cats who want to spend most of their days napping on window sills. :P

I wonder how an animal feels if their human drops their drawers and shit's on them? I bet they wouldn't like it. Seriously, I bet they would have an issue with it.

Usually when I get a bird, their wings are preclipped yk? I didn’t realize it was bad to clip their wings, I usually just do until they get used to me in case they like go on a high shelf and I can’t get them(it’s happened) and I don’t wanna stress them out too much by getting them down(when I got my bird Rio down he was panting really bad)

My second most viewed video is me cremating my Parakeet Green who passed away. I don't know why that is the top, but it is. The comments are all about animals passing away, and how they are thankful for the information about how to do it. I expect that for the video.
