I have to say I gained a lot of respect for Joc listening to this video. He knew the way the music industry worked. He knew that guys like Block took after dudes like Suge, Diddy, JD, etc-making you record at THEIR studios and then they charge you when they made you record there, making you use THEIR expensive producers, etc There were a lot of middle men involved in this (Bad Boy, Block Entertainment, Mastermind Ent) and everybody trying to make money. Joc shows that you ain't gotta get screwed, just have your paperwork right
@Msboochie2
@Msboochie2 2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately that is how it goes. You pay the cost to be the boss! If you aren't putting up the money, certain decisions are not yours to make. If you are investing your money on an artist, you need to be assured of where and with whom the artist works, with, especially if your team has been successful many times before. That is to be expected, if you pay all the bills in your place would you just let anyone come in there changing things around? That is a very basic concept in business. Now, having all these middle men, is what caused problems. That Block dude seems quite ignorant, and he scared all the money away from Joc trying to get his Suge Knight moment, braun is easy to find, brains not so much. They left Joc no other choice but to cut ties with some of those people. Don't get me wrong people like Suge will always exist in the music business, because there are so many crooks it creates a need for a Suge Knight, but it comes with a price.
@DamienEarth
@DamienEarth 2 жыл бұрын
@@Msboochie2 I feel you initially.. but this is AFTER a platinum record with no features! It has to end right there.. the micromanaging the money ends there, you've recouped! Joc now gets to pick studios, direct the money, decide features etc etc.. if he wants to build a studio and charge the label for him recording, you have earned that right as a platinum artist.. Secondly, you can't share management or lawyers.. they're all going to be loyal to the label over you. That was the first mistake.. If bro is pushing back on that advance on behalf of Bloc, he has to go. Not personal, just business.. your manager has to go get you some money. It's his job..

Nah, everybody isn't down to bend over to be someone's ho@, that's basically the music industry in a nutshell when you reach that top level with the biggest labels. I have a couple of relatives that's well known in the Houston Tx music scene from the 1990,s and early 2000,s. Those cats down there only did 1 or 2 album deals with major labels, and that only goes for the rappers who decided to sign back then, because they make so much money from the region's around them, to the point of not having to sign just to make money. So everybody should understand that these young cats who dont have a regional fanbase to start with are getting royally fu$%=÷ right now, because they don't have any leverage to start out with to begin with when trying to get in the game. The music industry is a pimp and ho+ game, literally in the sense of everybody is trying to sign you with advance money. In return that person owns 100% of your intellectual property, your royalties, masters, and they also get a high percentage of your show money and Merchandise money and features on other artists money as well. The only people I've seen while growing up who never got jerked were the majority of Houston rappers (because they were basically raised to only work independently) 3-6 mafia, Master P, and Baby. Other than that, everybody else i seen was complaining behind closed doors about their sheisty structured record deals. Stay independent if you're talented enough to gain a certain regional fanbase for yourself. But never sign over everything just for one time fat big pay check with no residuals afterwards.

I know Joc personally since childhood. When he gave me a promo copy of Goin Down He told me out his mouth direct that he was choosing between Bad Boy South, So So Def and Dusturbing Da Peace. IDK why he was so loyal to a cat like Block in the first place, he’d have been better off negotiating for himself as an independent artist if he had a damn bidding war. He lucky because nobody escapes Diddy. Block always gave off dark energy… you’d have to be in his presence to get what I mean, but my woman’s intuition ain’t the same as a man’s. I just wish I’da spoke to Joc on it but in your 20s, folks woulda said I was hating or full of ish…just bad vibes all around that cat aura. 20/20 a mofo! ✌🏾

"Dark Energy" from Big Block. I can see that. Half of my childhood friends are street dudes. And they have to do some crazy shit to survive (Block served time for manslaughter). Once they crossed certain lines, in the street. I've noticed a darkness on them too. Spiritual stuff is real. And maybe its the Karma from their life or something, but there are definitely hardened street dudes with mysterious dark energy. Note, I stopped hanging with my street friends after leaving for college. Then half of them died or were in and out of prison, etc. Obviously couldn't hang out with them anymore.

So listening to both interviews I agree with most people on this thread Joc story seems legit. It’s clear what happen at least to me. Block kept that advance money. That’s why he didn’t allow any features other than his other artist whom he doesn’t have to pay for a feature. And he made sure Joc didn’t record anywhere else or get outside producer help to keep from paying them.
