i think what i like most in these videos is the feeling that agadmator is actually talking to me in real time. often times after a move is played i'll think something like "huh, but can't you capture x here?" and agadmator immediately explains something a long the lines of "of course you cannot capture x here because it results in a mate in one". my response to those explanations is embarrassingly often "Oh..." unfortunately ^^"

What about the immediate Bc5+ at 12:31? The queen cannot capture, because it gets forked by Nd7+. White forces Black to give up a rook for his bishop, and there might be good counterplay with the rooks after that.

What if Re5 moves to e4 and from there to h4? How would that be too slow?
@Weltinventar
@Weltinventar 5 жыл бұрын
I assume you meant d5 to d4, then h4. You probably answer with ... Re4 Rxe4 Qxd1+ Re1 Qxe1# If instead of Rxe4 you move some other piece, Rxd4 is usually winning. Moving the rook again lets black double up for another mating threat, if necessary. A lot of lines to try out, but basically white needs to keep both rooks on the same file, giving them very little room. Another line for black to answer that would be g5 or Bg5. I would have liked an analysis of that move, though :)

English grandmaster Jonathan Spilman at the turn of the 80-90s was one of the strongest chess players in the world, twice participated in challenger matches, and in 1989 reached the semifinals, where only in a bitter struggle lost to Jan Timman. At the same time, Jonathan is one of the brightest personalities in the chess world; Bachelor of Mathematics, poet and philosopher at heart, vegetarian, witty journalist. After losing a pretender match in 1991 against his compatriot, rival friend Nigel Short (who took revenge on a similar match of 1988), Spilman dropped out of the clip of the strongest chess players in the world. In 1993, he was the second of the same Short in the match for the world crown with Kasparov.

After 12. Qb3 Na5 White really had no other choice but to play 13. Qc3 (despite all the complications that were mentioned, which ended up giving White a favorable Bishop & Knight for a Rook & pawn). That would have been better than 13. Qb4 as played, which only gave up a pawn without compensation. You called this move a "pawn blunder".
