Well it did take the combined efforts of the American designers over at SEGA of America and Archie Comics to iron out the kinks and fill in details of Sonic's lore and characters. Thanks to them we got things like Sonic's band and human girlfriend Madonna taken out; With things like his love of chili dogs and the Freedom Fighters put in instead.

@@larrylaffer3246 None of the American shit is actually canon though lol, only for the weird cartoon and comics. Sonic's band was definitely going to be in Sonic 1 quite late in development, but the assets for them were cut near the end so Sonic Team could fit the Sega intro chant voice clip in the game as it took up so much space or something, it wasn't Sega of America I'm pretty sure. Madonna being removed was just one person's suggestion, and it was earlier and they probably would have gotten rid of her anyway. The Sega of America and Archie westernized story shit was it's own random isolated stuff and was only slapped into localized instruction manuals and the weird, made-up American media at the time. The actual games had their own lore, stories and characterization (made up by the Japanese developers actually lol) since the beginning that were perfectly fine and even started being openly and exclusively used in all countries after Sonic Adventure. There weren't "kinks" that needed to be ironed out, it was needlessly complicated changes and westernization because the US is weird about that shit. It just muddled and confused the branding, Yuji Naka of Sonic Team had a lot of issues with it and it caused difficulties in general for them later on. This all happened even though Sonic was already heavily inspired by western stuff anyway and was even targeted towards the west, it isn't even that popular in Japan, yet the US still needed to change it all for some reason even though it was fine. There was never any Freedom Fighters in the old games, and the western canon never actually affected the true characters or series outside of Sonic Adventure 2 canonizing that Eggman's actual last name is Robotnik as a cute nod. Even the chili dog thing was made up and only in the western media, the first time the real game Sonic ever interacted with a chili dog was in Sonic and the Black Knight in 2009, where Sega at the time was already slowly becoming incredibly meta with the franchise and it's references anyway.
