I bought a VideoMic Pro and the audio sounded terrible compared to the built-in mic. I had no idea I had to tune the microphone sensitivity manually. Thank you for this guide! It sounds wonderful now.

Hi, I just bought the Boya BY-MM1+ to use on Nikon D7200 and it won't record anything, I only get audio hiss. I'm using the correct cable (TRS (2 rings) for the camera), could it be a cable defect? Because the microphone works fine on my phone and laptop using the TRRS cable included. Please help, any advice would be appreciated!

I use my Rode videomicro and I have to raise the volume bar in my camera up to 14 because it's too quite and result in high noises. Any tips? Thanks

I can't remember if the videomic you have has any adjustments? If you can make it more sensistive, then you could lower the volume on your camera and get less hiss. Otherwise you're looking at either a different mic, or running the mic through a preamp that connects to the your camera (and allows more control) or recording your audio into a separate audio recording device and synching up the audio and video in post. (you might contact Rode to see if they have other advice specific to their mic)

@@shawnfreedom I don't use them a lot, Tascam makes a nice one that also records the audio to the device - so you get two files - one in the camera and one separate. I haven't used it, but lots of people like it. Depends a lot on your budget and size I suspect. The Tascam is, relatively, inexpensive. I can't remember the model number, sorry,

I have no idea when the D7300 will come out. If you need a camera now, I'd get one.
