I'm Crazy about this album..my oh my , the songs just make me happy .. heaven knows why.. So ahead of its time, the electronic sounds were a nice surprise when I first heard it in 1977.. Kypros is a beautiful instrumental, in my imagination it takes me to Greece and i am on top of a cliff overlooking the sea dancing to the beautiful rhythm . Yes I truly love this whole album

It's definitely one of his most produced albums. Sonically, it is clear and immersive. I think my favorites are Mona Bone Jakon through Catch Bull At Four. Buddha And The Chocolate Box had some good songs. I like Numbers when I'm in the right mood. Not a fan of Foreigner or Back To Earth.

i grew up in the seventies , most music i love was from the sixties and seventies...in seventies all kinds of excellent mellow, deep rock, and folk rock came out...and cat stevens was huge...but there are many you prob not heard for seventines or sixties, you should listen to more...jim croce, csn and y, joni mitchel, tim hardin, carole king, harry chapin, john denver, james taylor, dan hill, america, etc... and bands even cream[you might know them], donovan, listen to john lennon solo[primal scream, imagine], there is so much there. reason i m saying is to be honest, i haven t heard a lot of good contemporary music...some groups like radio head seemed good...but...

This is the first time I heard the songs after Remember The Days Of The Old School Yard, which I first heard on July 24, 1977 at age 9 via American Top 40 starring Casey Cassum. Progressive Rock for sure, and it’s a good thing I am listening to this in 2020, where good new music is virtually nonexistent.

@@gelubatir9794 From my description, I heard Remember The Days Of The Old School Yard when it debuted on July of 1977 on the Billboard when it was on Casey’s radio show. About a month and a half earlier Manfred Mann’s Earth Band had a minor hit called, “Spirit In The Night” which peaked at number 40. It was a Bruce Springsteen cover, from the Asbury Park album. On December 18, 1976 “Blinded By The Light” debuted stateside at number 40 and eventually made it to number one in early 1977. The radio was by my side when both events occurred. In the mid to late 60s, they had a few hits like The Mighty Quinn and Do Wah Ditty ...., but I did not listen much to them during that era, when it was just Manfred Mann. In early 1984, Manfred Mann’s Earth Band also had a top 30 hit stateside called, “Runner” which was a top 30 hit and I remembered the MTV video. They also have a several albums starting in 1970, which sound incredible and are progressive rock, pre Blinded By The Light, that really demonstrate how great the band really is. In a nutshell, I do know who Manfred Mann and Manfred Mann’s Earth Band are. When I reread my entry about this more or less obscure hit by Cat Stevens (although great), knowing Manfred Mann via their top 40 appearances would have been a given.

By the Cats very high standards this is a middling sort of a record . the carefree jollity of the opening track often finds favour with casual listeners however he saved the best for last, Child for a Day a warm melancholic look back in old age to younger days , it struck a chord with UNICEF who adopted this quiet remarkable paean as their anthem many moons ago , we were all a bit younger back then Yusuf , thanks for coming back to us .

Personally , There are so very many memories related to this album; songs that match up with people, places, and times--as only a great artist can do with their music. Izitso is a heart touching continuation of the "shared journey" we all were on. By this time Cat Stevens had seen and done it all-- no surprise that his interests were taking him to other places.

In the 60s Cat Stevens put out highly produced orchestra backed albums. Mathew and Son, New Masters. He added vocals and piano. Alotta strings and brass backing him. Then in early 70s when he recovered from illness he came back w/a new label and producer and hit the big time w/an acoustic folk/pop/rock string of hit records that the hippies ate up. These were what made him a mega star: Mona Bone Jakon, Tillerman, Teaser, Catch Bull at 4. Late in his pop career he put out three syntho/techno/jazz pop albums, which had some great songs (Drywood) but were a step back commercially, of which Izitso was second. You buy his last 3 albums as a set nowadays. During his last album, Back to Earth, he sort of blew up his career to escape his contract and settled down in UK in the Muslim community. That was all you heard about Cast Stevens musically until the Ipod era coaxed him outa retirement for a piece of that download pie. Which is where he has has been ever since. Soooo you've got 3 distinct eras of music styles that are quite dissimilar. From one artist.

CAT STEVENS: IZITSO (Cat’s Masterpiece) Cat’s best, and most popular albums might be Teaser and the Firecat and Tea for the Tillerman, but his last three (Numbers, Izitso and Back to Earth) were and will always be my all-time favourites. Critics often praise Catch Bull at Four and Buddha and the Chocolate Box and although I agree that they are very good albums - I much prefer Izitso. They say this is Cat’s most “pop” album, whatever that means. All I know is that it’s an under-rated masterpiece and my absolute favourite Cat Stevens record, from start to finish. It’s got that “1977” feel to it in terms of the instrumentation (Cat continues his experiments with the synthesiser) and it’s more relaxed and laid back. Never has Cat sounded so happy and content and in love. Who would have guessed how dark things would get on his next album, or that he would turn his back on the whole industry, and indeed his identity; there’s no evidence of that here. We start with the classic synth-pop of (Remember the Days) of the Old Schoolyard which is followed by perhaps his most under-rated song, Life (check out those chord changes). Whether Cat ever smoked a joint in his life I don’t know, but you can definitely hear its influence here. After that is his most rockin’ tune, Killin’ Time followed by another of his interesting instrumentals Kypros (which has both a Greek bouzouki and Middle Eastern vibe to it). Then the first of three mellow ballads that make up the body of Izitso - Bonfire, Crazy and Sweet Jamaica (very similar stylistically and yet very different). Between all that is the classic, (I Never Wanted) To Be a Star which although pointing to him quitting the business, never sounds dark or melancholic in any way (listen to that sweet guitar refrain at the end). Then Cat does a complete 180 with the unique electro-sounding Was Dog a Doughnut? (His humour obviously very much alive) And finally, the country-tinged Child for a Day (Dolly Parton should have covered this). What more can you ask from an album? And yet critics seem to miss this time and time again, although thankfully the buyers didn’t (it was certified gold). And check out that album art-work (don’t you just love 1970s album covers?) 10/10 A+

Funny... maybe if I. Listen to this again at another time I’ll like it better, but compared to the complex simplicity of his prior acoustic works, this just sounds so over-produced. I think Buddha and the Chocolate Box came after this, and while there are electrical instruments, you aren’t constantly being flattened by Moog synthesizers. That was a good, balanced mix.
