I remember watching this for the first time, and really finding out how brilliant and fun animation can be. After watching this, I saw Midoriya and Todoroki and knew it was done by Yutaka Nakamura. It was the first time I guessed an animator's work, and it made me want to know more about these animators. It pretty much started my fanboying over animators and probably even my animation/sakuga career. A couple years passed, and recently, I've been in a ditch, slowly losing my joy in animation, still animating but without any joy. But I came back to these videos and saw how enthusiastic you were, talking about these animators. It reignited my love for animation. I got excited again. I don't know how long this will last, but for now, I'm happy I can enjoy animation once again. So thanks for your videos and really inspiring me to animate.

jrlwhite Oh. Well, I don't completely understand how Japanese animators do it, but the closest I can say is years of practice with both art and animation. Study real life as much as possible, even if you're doing cartoonish art. It'll really help. There's also a book called Preston Blair's Animation, which is very helpful for learning Western animation. It can give you a better education than most colleges.

Not only is Nakamura's draftsmanship is second to none, his clear cut choreography and grasp of cinematography never fails to display anything less than the best angle of the action at the perfect moment. He's more than just an "anime animator": his flashy effects animation are just icing on the cake, even without them his drawings are so good he is equal to or better than some of the most legendary draftsmen known for their insane abilities to rotate detailed 2D drawings as if they were 3D objects in space, (Glen Kean, James Baxter, Milt Kahl, Richard Williams). And none of those guys have his cinematic eye for fast paced dynamic action.

@Hitorio8 жыл бұрын
Would you give time instead of giving legs?
@E-Man58058 жыл бұрын
Hitorio Like literal years off my life span or are you saying just practice harder? Because...nothing doing. Unless I'm secretly left-handed.
@Hitorio8 жыл бұрын
I mean moreso the latter, though not "harder." Harder doesn't necessarily equal better. It's not just about repetition or drawing X amount of sketches every day hoping that your skill will magically improve because all the advice pro artists give you is "practice." There are people whose drawings looks the same over the span of years because no one showed them where to put their energy. My advice is this - and this worked for me (I'll post an animation in some months to reinforce this): Drawing Fundamentals to put your energy into: *-Thinking in 3D* For an animator especially, it's so important to comprehend the things you draw as spatial forms and not as flat lines or strokes on paper. This one skill goes unlearned by so many artsts that, in turn, struggle. This is the skill that makes things like dynamic angles easy to map. *-Understanding the physics of light* The only reason human beings can see objects is because light bounces off those objects and into our eyes. The way light bounces off a three-dimensional form determines what looks dark and what looks light to us. Understand how light bounces off of things and penetrates things; shading becomes simple. *-Knowing the anatomy of whatever you're drawing* Example: human skin doesn't have the contours it does for no reason. It's like a drape or cloth that's thrown over a bunch of moving gears that poke through and give it that shape. If you know what's inside the thing you're drawing, you can draw it in any position you want with accuracy by imagining the insides in different positions. *-Understanding the physics of motion* ...and not just for animation. When you draw, you're capturing something that's usually in motion on some level in life (except, in a sense, "inanimate" objects). Even someone that's just standing there has a downward force exerted upon them by gravity. People walking. Talking and utilizing body language. Fighting. Dancing. I guarantee that, if you put energy into these specific skills, you'll explode in growth proportionately to the level of energy you put into them. It's how these guys do it, though they vary in their flavors of proficiency in each of these areas. A lot of people ignore these fundamentals and just draw flat lines on paper for years wondering why they don't suddenly improve - as per the irritatingly limited advice of some of their idols.

Good work, but the style of drawing blocked debris isn't solely from Nakamura. Satoru Utsunomiya also drew simplified debris before and in turn influenced Norio Matsumoto who then would go on to inspire web-gen animators like Shingo Yamashita and Kenichi Kutsuna in their approach to effects animation. Current young animators who strongly take after Nakamura's style would be Naoki Kobayashi and Shun Enokido.
@ryux70635 жыл бұрын
Its true that Utsunomiya used the cubic debris before Nakamura but I don't remember seeing Norio Matsumoto drawing them. Also canipa didn't say Nakamura's first use of the Yutapon cube was the first appearance of cubic debris in general.
