Author and historian Yuval Noah Harari believes that the Israeli government's policies under Prime Minister Netanyahu allowed for Hamas’ Oct 7 attack to be as deadly as it was. He points specifically to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's efforts to undermine the judiciary and other democratic institutions.
“He was trying to systematically destroy the institutions of Israeli democracy,” Harari tells Ian Bremmer in a live interview at the 92nd Street Y in New York City. He links these domestic political maneuvers to the failure to heed warnings from military and intelligence services about external threats leading up to October 7, arguing that this negligence was influenced by conspiracy theories about a so-called “deep state.”
The problem, Harari says, goes deeper than Netanyahu. He talks about the ideological infighting within the Israeli government as a battle for the country's soul and for Judaism itself. He contrasts the principles of Zionism with those of a rising messianic movement that espouses Jewish supremacy, warning of the dire implications should this faction's vision of a deeply stratified society. “This will change the very meaning of Judaism all over the world.”
So what kind of outcome could both Israelis and Palestinians live with? Harari advocates for defending Israel's right to exist while also ensuring Palestinian rights. He rejects the notion that these positions are mutually exclusive, arguing for a future where both Israelis and Palestinians can live dignified lives within their homelands. “Just because you are in favor of the rights of Palestinians doesn’t mean you have to be also in favor of destroying Israel completely.”

See...I don't understand why this isn't discussed more. Yes in theory Israel has the "right" to defend itself, but the TIME to do that was from minute one on October 7. They KNEW this was going to happen and yet it took *hours* to get IDF on the scene?! It's also fairly well documented that it's extremely likely that the IDF were themselves responsible for quite a few of those 1200 Israeli deaths on the day, itself. Israel has tried to ages to find a smart way to withdraw from the Arabic territories obtained in 1967. The fact that Netanuyahu was elected for so many years is the Israeli collective mental fatigue from trying to find a smart way for withdrawal and live in co-existance with Palestinians. Noah Harari, I can assure you, is one of the vocal voices in Israel to withdraw from the West Bank. But given the Gaza withdrawal precedent, it has to be under agreement with a non-violent Palestinian partner.

Here is a scenario: It's 1947 or so. Britain controls the region now called, ironically, The Holy Land. It is inhabited by a majority of Arabs. ( this is true ) There is a plan to create a Jewish Homeland in the area. Can this be done so that no one feels cheated or disenfranchised? Imagine, back then, two states being established. One for Jews who, historically have been a persecuted minority wherever they have lived. Call it Israel And one for the Arab population of the region. Call it Palestine. Invest significant capital to create a viable and vibrant economy in each place. Proper dwellings. Infrastructures. Feelings between the two peoples are cordial. There are economic and cultural exchanges that benefit everyone. Mutually held Holy Sites are administered by a committee composed of members of both groups. Imagine the money saved over the decades, the lives saved and enriched. Now imagine who would be the losers in such a scenario.... arms merchants.

He is mostly right but the Israeli security apparatus didn't need the permission of the prime minister to guard its borders. This is their failing first and foremost even though it is of course the responsibility of the prime minister which has weakened Israel in the eyes of its enemies and thus encourage them to launch an attack. But he relied on the Israel military and technological supremacy to defend against such threats. But they were caught totally off guard in a shameful way.

Interesting interview! I agree with Yuval when he says that both people the Palestinians and the Israelis have the right to live in Dignity and Justice! It would be also interesting to admit a superb historical fact: all the violence and hate that our Jewish People have faced in the last 2000 years didn’t come from the Palestinians, the Arabs or the Muslims, it came from white Christian European supremacist. Even words like Pogrom are Slavic words, Auschwitz and the Holocaust are made by Germans . Let’s be honest with ourselves to move forward! I don't dispute your analysis. I want to ask if you think it would be fair to relabel the group oppressing the "Jewish People" as a group competing with the Jewish People for dominance. I don't believe I am a "supremacist" but I do believe I am a lot like a "Christian European" and therefore easily could have been the oppressor. If I am, or could have been, directly involved in the dispute, on either side, a personal revelation and behavior change could help, otherwise its a "they" and not "me" problem.

Yuval Noah Harari and Ehud Barak were creating division in Israel unjustly claiming that judicial reform would destroy democracy (when actually it made the country more democratic with checks and balances because the unelected left elitists, which these two men are a part of, would not have the power to knock down legislation made by elected officials just because they deemed it "unreasonable" - that's what was being changed - the unreasonableness clause). This division was weakening Israel in the eyes of our enemies and thus made them more bold to attack. Now Yuval is inverting that fact and blaming those who wanted democratic reform. What a projection of his own guilt in weakening Israel!

For progressives, the academic intelligentsia and the left generally in the West, Israel lost the propaganda war decades ago. They're in their eyes, an 'evil' oppressor, an apartheid state and deserve everything they reap. For those that see their survival only through the heavy-handed support of Capitalist Neo-liberalism. They're always the enemy of hope, and of an egalitarian future. They're the easy target, when attacking Capitalism and Western US led democratic values. Whether this hides antisemitism is debatable. But it is not too difficult to infer that Westerners prefer, their jews as a weak Diaspora, than within a strong nation state. Every other negative comment you hear is stating the two are not mutually exclusive. You can 'hate' one, without inferring hate of the other... is always the excuse. Even some Western Jews despise Israel as a legitimate reason for them to be mocked and attacked in the West. They would rather assimilate invisibly... than be associated with such negative stereotypes. As Israel is a democracy, with a far right, a far left, centralists and a vast silent majority. It is impossible to find a common homogeneity, under the constant spotlight of disgust and contempt from the West. With the propaganda war lost and not likely to ever be won back. Knowing you're forever seen as 'evil' has its internal psychological repercussions on a nation. The future of Israel is a state of constant anxiety for the people that live in, what was once considered a safe haven for jews.

Weird. No, I would humbly say that Israel cannot unilaterally "change Judaism." Perhaps I am being too literal, but Jews around the world will continue to be free to interpret "Judaism" and to live and to find identity in their own ways. It's possible that the trends he describes, yes a too-large percentage of Israeli Jews .. currently they have a view of Judaism, and it may get more popular within Israel.

He sounds very broad minded but several problematic views are hidden in his remarks. He assumes most pro Palestine people want the obliteration of the Israeli state and while he gets close to it, he fails to mention or acknowledge horrors of the decades-long occupation like unwarranted detentions and night raids just to humiliate and subdue (by policy), the siege or blockade on Gaza, the frequent shooting of innocent civilians without any repercussions for the soldiers whatsoever…. The list goes on. Yuval seems to think Netanyahu and a bloodthirsty Hamas are the main problems.
