About Yuzuru’s statement: He’s not just a national athlete or a celebrity in Japan, he’s almost like an idol. And the Japanese are *very* possessive over their idols (oshi). Even a weatherwoman (Saya Hiyama) found to be dating a national tennis player caused the company’s stock to drop by ~10%. And this happened less than a month before Yuzuru’s statement. It’s unfortunate but penning a very polite (keigo) letter with the majority of it placating fans and keeping his spouse anonymous is the best way to keep both of them safe.

Yuzuru is an idol in Japan. Some fans of idols get mad about people even just dating to the point where they will even attack the significant other. It is smart that he isn’t sharing anything about his fiancé. It will protect them.

@@luvl1344 It is actually a way of protecting his partner. In Asian countries "idols" are almost seen as "public property" in a way. Fans seem to feel almost as if they are in a sort of "relationship" with their favorite idols and can get very very salty when they just date. The idol's partner - especially if they aren't also an "idol" - can be attacked by uber-fans. And those attacks can get pretty bad and include not only the partner but their family as well. It is safer to take as much attention off of his partner as possible. Emphasizing himself and his fans is a very smart and necessary move.

Hello, Japanese person here. A reason for not talking about his partner in the announcement could very much be cultural. In Japan, PDA isn't seen as often, especially not in public figure- my aunt and uncle have been together over 20 years and have three children, yet they don't even sleep in the same room. I've never seen my friends parents hold hands or refer affectionately together. Also, Hanyu is a very public figure and he is protecting them from toxicity of the internet.

The announcement just screams Yuzuru vibe since it's all about figure skating. I'm happy that Hanyu got married. From his previous interviews, he did mention about wanting to marry and have kids. Now that he's retired from competitive figure skating and becomes a professional figure skater, also just did an amazing solo ice show... It's just a good time to get married since it sounds like they may have been dating behind the scene for a while now.

yuzuru has always been a very private person, so his statement really isn't odd at all. especially considering his new spouse now has to live with the fact that her husband is on hundreds of bilboards and thousands of lockscreens, it is not surprising that they would want to keep her anonymous. i believe family registers are public japan, hence he had to make a statement (rather on his own terms to prevent the tabloids from running with it)

@@etherealtb6021 not a fan but I believe Dave Lease from TSL was the one who found it. Tbh, there's more going on with Diana and Gleb's marriage. TSL predicted that the Russians might start changing nationalities and competing for other countries since Russia was banned. There were even rumors of Eteri being a coach in the US. It was suspicious that Diana and Gleb haven't returned to Russia since the war and the Russians were banned. Dave shrewdly assumed that Diana (a US citizen) might have to marry Gleb to give him a green card so they can skate for the US. Well it looks like Dave was right, they did have a Vegas wedding (Diana was born in Vegas). Gleb also hasn't been back to Russia. They're very clearly gunning for a citizen for Gleb to keep him out of the war and military service. All the noise that Dave stirred up effectively made sure that the Smolkins can't represent the US or skate for USFS so they changed tactics. They now skate for Georgia. Marriages are a public record in Vegas so it was only a matter of checking records.

it's extremely common for japanese celebrities to date very out of the public eye and only announce it once marriage is in the cards. Often even just after getting married AND having a child. sometimes it all just comes out at once. They usually say who they're marrying if it's another celebrity and otherwise it'll often just say "to a non-celebrity (man/woman)"

Jpop fan here. Japanese celebrities, name it, idols, actresses/actors, voice actors/actresses, KZbin streamers, TV announcers... Anyone in the public eye announces marriage beforehand or after the fact. And yes, kpop idols doing this is modeled after Japanese culture since 2000s, when Korean celebrities started selling in Japan, Japanese have been doing so since the 90s. Japanese celebrities getting a public Instagram or Twitter depends on their agency, and the most popular ones just barely got theirs. Kpop artists sometimes start with their accounts from the start, since they market appearance much more, they also sell image. A bit different, but these announcements are way more common in Japanese culture than in Korean culture.

If you mean the Plushenko shows, skaters who participated in those shows were not aware of the pro-war nature of the events, Liza Tuktik made a statement about that. I never heard of his words about Putin, that's a very unfortunate statement if it's true, but we need to consider that in authoritarian regimes, it is really difficult and dangerous for people to criticize and speak negatively about the leader of the country. Mark has never openly said he supports the war, so I don't think it's fair to label him as pro-war. Speaking of Ice Dance, you should really take a look at Hannah Lim and Ye Quan, representing Korea. I discovered them on the junior circuit and to me they are such a promising team. They are so good at acting (especially Hannah but Ye has definitely been catching up to her this past season), such good performers and have endearing personalities. This year they'll compete as seniors for the first time. I can't wait to see them grow, they're such a good team. I suggest you watch their free dance to Danse Macabre from the junior worlds 2023.

In Eastern Europe it is typical to have only few month between engagement and wedding. The engagement isn’t usually celebrated as much. And it takes on average three month from the day you go to registry office till actual ceremony. (Can be more, it depends). Sometimes even few weeks. 🤷🏻‍♀️
