welcome back yuzuru. (as always, turn up music - it's rather soft - and read below for more thoughts)
every time i try to come up with the emotions and feelings i’ve had these olympics, words fail me. now isn't any different, so just excuse the lack of eloquence here lmfao.
all translation credit goes to yuuki (as always! hahah) at / yukirin1408 thank you so, so much for your help xoxo
usually in the description i like to talk about thought processes that went into making the video, but for this one, i made it more on emotion, than on thought, and i hope you can feel it that way too. you can see there’s really no structure for this video; things put chronologically out of order, placed here and there throughout the song, but to be honest, i didn’t really want to give this video a definite structure. rather, i just wanted to follow the feeling of the music to mimic my emotions, to recreate the moment through my eyes (i guess?). i won’t call it my letter to yuzuru (lol) but in a way, it kinda is in the sense that i took (some of, of course not all lol) my personal feelings and emotions from that moment and tried to manifest them into a visual project. so consider it a “stream of consciousness”, seeing yuzuru’s victory through my lenses type of video.
you might also be wondering why i chose not to include any clips of yuzuru with his olympic gold medal. well, for sure, his second olympic gold medal is a huge achievement, but in my mind, pyeongchang was more than the medal. it was about the birth of a living legend, a solidification of his legacy, his spirit and determination. as a witness to his historical feats and accomplishments, sure, medals are tangible and physical results of winning and his efforts, but i wanted to focus on the things that are harder to grasp - feelings and moments. moreso than medals, pyeongchang was a testament to his dedication and his personal triumphs - coming back from an injury (albeit skating on painkillers, why would you emotionally dupe me like this yuzuru), having only starting jumping quads a mere two weeks before the actual competition, while surrounded by so many people speculating and voicing doubts about his chances of victory, people saying his time is over, yet reclaiming his rightful spot, rising above the naysayers, the competition, and his own olympic demons, with groundbreaking, indubitable performances. as for the title, i like tying in the original music title with the video - so there we have “birth of a legend.” also, as yuuki pointed out very nicely, it ties in with the “rebirth" theme of last season’s video, of which, the thoughts in the description of that video will forever summarize how i feel about yuzuru and his unending determination and challenge.
i have so much to say, yet so little. so before i make a mess of myself, i'll just end it with this: if there is one thing i treasure and want more than anything else, it is (of course) yuzuru’s happiness. seeing his genuinely happy smile, his joy to be back skating on the ice, is the greatest thing i’ll ever remember out of my pyeongchang olympic experience. hearing all of yuzuru's post olympic interviews talking about his happiness are moments i'll cherish forever. and i hope this video invokes the same feeling in you too.
