The film was made with more humility and authenticity than you usually see in opera. The characters were poor, made their mistakes, and there was no safety net for them.

Apart from the excellent singers and the maestro L. Maazel, the director Fr. Rosi did a great job by turning "Carmen", the most popular opera of all times, into a movie. As he had previously said it was the biggest challenge of his career. Quality cinematography at its best.
