As someone who's trying to use corporate software to build one single Sierra-like screen with a couple of NPCs and items to interact with (it's essentially just barebones coding with few amenities since this software was never supposed to be used for anything like this), even something as rudimentary as _leaving the damn pause menu_ is challenging and time-consuming to code. So many pitfalls that I weren't even aware of tend to keep me stuck for hours on end. For instance, even typing isn't straightforward since even a briefly pressed key triggers the same character signal over multiple iterations (so it's not really "w" that you type by pressing the key for a split second, more like "wwwwwwwwwwwwww"), so you need to think up a way around this. It's just thinking, thinking and thinking. I've really grown to respect the Sierra guys for what they did at the time. It may look unimpressive today, but so much crunchy shit goes into every single frame, you don't even have an idea.

The actor that plays Sonny Bonds in Police Quest 3 bears a striking resemblance to Val Kilmer. I believe there's a picture of the actor in the game manual for Police Quest 1. Or maybe it's the Police Quest 3 manual. He also looks vaguely like Kilmer in PQ1 VGA.

Those turn of the nineties games were good learning material because the dialogue tended to be short and concise and most importantly, it was you who prompted it to pass. Later, after they introduced voice acting and took away the control of the dialogue box speed from the player, spontaneous dictionary lookups became all but impossible.

Oh, this takes me back. Probably the very first computer game I ever played, or at least remembered playing. I'm curious though; is this a new port? In the version I played, you'd get an automatic Game Over in the drugs bust if you didn't a) draw your gun before interrupting (because both the pusher and the kid would run) b) radio Laura before or during the interruption to tell her to grab anyone trying to bail (because the guy would catch her by surprise and get away) or c) read the kid his rights before questioning him (because not doing so apparently invalidates anything he says) Ah, Sierra. Man, the satisfaction you could get from completing their games really was second to none...

I always had pirated versions of these Sierra games as a kid, so I was never able to progress very far because you needed to know certain phrases to use, etc. But man, do I remember driving around and stopping at the various places. You could interact with some more of the characters than what was done in this video. For example, in the locker room, you can talk to the guy in the shower and the guy sitting on the toilet...I think the janitor too. Not much happens with these interactions, but they are kind of fun regardless. These old games seem so tedious now with all the little things you need to do.

@@joakimkempe1129 I progressed to a certain point, but there were certain phrases you needed to know that, I think, were in the manual or a separate booklet that came with the game.
