June 7th, 1998. 20 year old Zab “Super” Judah takes on veteran “Irish” Micky Ward for the USBA Interim Light Welterweight Title. Going into the fight, Ward was already a 13 year veteran of the sport and have fought 12 round fights many times while Judah had only fought past the 8th round once in his young career. This fight was seen as a test for the young, upcoming Judah who had a good amateur career with a record of 110-5. This is also Judah’s first ever title fight.
Going into the fight Judah was 15(11)-0 since making his professional debut back in September 1996, a month short of his 19th birthday. On the other hand, Micky Ward had a record of 31(22)-8 with notable wins over Alfonso Sanchez, Louis Veader (2x), Tony Martin and Frankie Warren.
For the most part of the fight, Judah outboxes the veteran with his hand speed, defensive skills and combination punching. However, the incredibly tough Irishman continues to push the fight relentlessly and able to land good shots from time to time despite being outboxed for the most part. While this appears to be a one sided fight, it is in no way boring as it was action packed and Ward’s persistence in pushing the action despite the clear disparity in speed and boxing skills.
"It's the closest lopsided fight I think you will find."
- Bob Pappa
In Round 1, Judah was warned for a hard low blow with referee Jorge Alonso giving Ward the 5 minute recovery time. Then in Round 9, Ward returned the favor. However, neither were penalized for the fouls. Throughout the fight, both fighters exchanged taunts in the ring.
Note that neither of these two mentioned fouls are featured in the highlights.
Interestingly, Ward was fighting with the southpaw stance in most rounds despite being more effective fighting in the orthodox stance as Al Bernstein noted. Going into the 9th round, Bernstein's unofficial scorecard was 89-82 in favor of Zab Judah.
In a 2013 interview, Zab Judah have stated Micky Ward to be his toughest opponent.
Enjoy the highlights of this underrated Junior Welterweight bout and be sure to comment, rate and subscribe! Muchos gracias and never stop punching!

Ward was a part time fighter. People forget he was working construction basically the entire time he was a professional. He was an excellent action fighter and had a good story, but when he got in there with A-Level guys, his journeyman status really showed.

what I see when I look at Ward's career is someone who because of his handling (by those who purported to have his best interests at-heart) was essentially ruined. It is only because of his innate talent that once freed (to a degree) from that backwards handling (in his 30s) that we saw glimpses of what he truly might have been able to do had he been groomed to be a champion by a championship trainer (and a championship team). This kid had unique traits that could have made him one of the all-time greats. He had power in both hands. And no one delivered a body shot better in his class. This fight is a classic example of the underachievement. Ward is the better innate fighter but his confidence (and knowledge) is in the toilet. Contrast this with his fight against Neery when Ward's confidence was unwavering. It was a clinic. Jmo, of course.

Not sure why this fight was “underrated”. At least according to the highlights, it was 6 minutes of Zab Dominating and a good 30 second stretch by Ward.

I loved watching Mickey Ward fights...he had great power...after watching the movie they made with Mark Wahlburg and Christian Bale....the msg i got is his family used him as an income...well mostly his bro and mother...wish he had taken the full time training deal in vegas...All in all Mickey was awesome!!!

Judah looked so promising, but ultimately he never amounted to much at all. After Tzsyu starched him, he beat a couple decent fighters, but he never really beat anyone of consequence. Just goes to show, talent without the head and heart to match is mediocre at best.

Umm...He was champion. Wtf are you talking about? And so what Tzsyu caught him? It's boxing! Tzsyu got slumped as well. It means nothing.

The Fuck are you talking about? ZAB JUDAH became THE UNDISPUTED CHAMPION OF THE WORLD at 21 years old. Started fight at 6. He had NO business fight in his 30s.

What are you talking about! He was a champion like Buster Douglas. Like Andy Ruiz! Elite for sure! No but srsly I'd rate Zab as an A minus fighter.

BULLSHIT ! ZAB JUDAH was THE YOUNGEST EVER CHAMP in that Division. He started Boxing at an EARLY age. Just like PRINCE NASEEM retiring at 28, ZAB should have at 28 or sooner.

Unfortunately for Ward, Judah was just on another level, 20 years old, on peak of his condition. Ward is known for his tremendous stamina. But that poor workhorse wasn't able to make any tangible opposition in this bout.
