Zach's mother is inspiring to me. She was so realistic about everything and so loving, it warmed my heart! I have a type of epilepsy where I am able to live on my own as long as I take my meds. I just graduated from college and it's my dream to advocate for people with epilepsy! Zach seems like such a sweetie : )

This is a beautiful and carefully produced video to spread awareness of epilepsy. My son is 21 yrs. old and has Angelman Syndrome and has suffered debilating seizures since he was 1 yr. old. He'll finish his last year of high school this Fall. It's apparent the teachers who are with Zach each day are amazing, compassionate people who enjoy their job. I commend the parents and especially the siblings for being such a loving, caring family. I know all too well, it's not easy. Many blessings.

I'm 32 & I live home with mom, dad's passed away. I have epilepsy. Mom suffered from kidney failure 5 times in 14 months. I had my first seizure after caring for her, thank God! I mean thank God because I am glad I was in good enough shape to care for her when she really needed me. This is astounding. Thank you for creating this. Zachary, you're in my prayers.

I am a 10 year old, and, shockingly, I aspire to be a neurosurgeon. I actually decided about 2 and a half years ago that I would focus on epilepsy and how to cure it. I have donated over $100 (I know its not much, but every little bit counts.) to the epilepsy foundation. I hope that one day I will actually be known and overcome all of my "depressing thoughts". That's the curse of being a genius. You think WAY too much, then you get overwhelmed and then eventually die inside. At least for me. All you young people with epilepsy hold on I'l be there soon :)

May blessing be given by your hands and always be at your feet. Lee Anne... What a beautiful loving family you have. Blessings to your sister Jen the nurse. What an angel you are to your family. Thanks for sharing you story with us. My cousin has epilepsy. Very sever... he suffered allot until he was 18. He is a savant. Mathematics and the ability to repeat anything he reads. If he reads it, he knows the info forever. He actually help heal himself when he was 18. He still had a few a month after about a year figuring out his fats in his new ketogenic diet. But he finally took just 3 pills a day instead of 30-40 so many. His doctor was amazed and thankful he had the initiative to find some answers to help himself. He is 50 this year and down to maybe 1 or 2 a year. He was my best friend growing up! Every times I go to visit him... my grandmother would get all upset, because we wouldn’t part and talk all day and evening! Hehehehe! Epilepsy is such a tough disease. I wish Zach could eat more. I wonder if you could mixing things and be able to auto feed him. Or now that he is eating a little look into the diet. Have you heard of the Ketogenic Diet? You may have. Especially with living with Epilepsy. I send you lots of love and prayers to you and your family.

I got up and punched them in the face, they said it in front of my girlfriend as ignorantly as possible. Hope epilepsy awareness gets out more.

I watched this to help understand epilepsy better and yes it did help in some ways but i think there are different cases of epilepsy. One of my best friends passed away from a seizure earlier this year but she only had mild epilepsy, you couldn't even notice it. I used to say little jokes like "oh you look like your having a seizure" or "having a coughing seizure" I never would have guessed that a year later hearing that would make me cry. I just want to say that anyone who is struggling with epilepsy to stay strong and don't give up, and even though I'm a complete stranger if you ever feel the need to talk about it with someone I'm here.

I have seen a young boy with severe epilepsy who began seizing more and more each day with no relief until he ended up on hospice, needing to be sedated just to stop the seizures. Every time they lightened up the sedation, he would just have seizure after seizure. He passed away when he was around 10 years of age, all due to epilepsy. I know some children have been "cured" by having either half their brain removed or having the two halves of their brain separated, but that usually causes deficits in other ways. This is a disorder that has plagued humans since the time of Christ, it's about time that a real cure, or better medication, is found.

I don’t know if it’s the same one your talking but they did a dormitory but it’s an old one like in the 1980’s where the boy was dying from his epilepsy and they put him into hospice care to get him to be commutable they were trying to get his mom to see him before he past and he did past away. He has a older sister who was scared to go to school she thought he will die while she was at school

Me Becky I agree 190% and I have had Epilepsy since I was 4 years old. I have multiple disabilities and I was born at 24 weeks early. The only thing is the seizures only happen when I hear the sounds of shot guns or smell 👃 crack and cocaine. 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 But I did find out when I was ten years old I was severely allergic to the smells of crack and cocaine. I can’t be anywhere near the smells. I have Cerebral Palsy as well as other life threatening disabilities.

I felt bad his Mom talked so down right in front of him about kids his age going off to college and university and going to bath and beyond and in her words and in such a crappy tone about having to buy diapers and formula. I can understand how she would like to be like the other Moms but she isn't so she's had his life time to accept that. He does have feelings and emotions like anyone else. She clearly needs therapy and support herself. This isn't easy for anybody, but to brazenly complain about having to change his diapers right in front of him angered me tremendously. Everyone else is giving information on his case and she's on here trolling for pity party attention. You can feel her hurting, but her snide remarks engendered antipathy rather than empathy for her. Without comment near the end that she'd do what she could to take care of him herself so he wouldn't need a group home, I'd have guessed her divorce papers were already in and she'd made her plans to escape within the next couple years.

Prayers. Please do me a fav and stop treating him like a child, he's 19, stop talking about him in front of him but address him directly as an adult. Let him swim 7 days a week if possible & see a chiropractor. Talk to him not around him, I remember the things people have said or things they have done most while in seizure or coming out of one. He needs positive hope that he can do it himself, it may be a struggle but he'll fight like hell for it. I hated being talked to like I didn't get it.

Thank you for posting this. I did hear of a number of cases in which epilepsy could not be managed through medication, and those suffering in such serious cases opted for neurosurgery essentially removing the part of the brain in which the seizures originated. It is an extreme measure, but apparently it has helped in greatly reducing the occurrence of seizures.

Even brain surgery isn't always effective. I have had a occipital lobe surgery, but my seizures returned after a few months. I had gone through many medications, before trying the surgery, I had 3 areas where the seizures originated from, I'm still on medications and the seizures still happen, but at least less often or agressive if I don't miss a dose (still pretty often, like one or 2 a day)

I'm a couple of years younger than Zach, and have had epilepsy since I was a toddler, yet I function as normally as possible. I have some mild cognitive impairments and my speech is slightly affected, but I can't fathom how Zach's seizures have affected him so. Wow, I really relate to Zach in this video--being a "special case" epileptic, and all. I TOTALLY agree with Connor when he mentions that Zach is more than just a boy in a man's body. What I personally experience after a seizure is more complex than that, despite the temporary memory loss, etc. Keep on keeping on, epileptics ;)

That being said don't take it personal just take it from experience. I get frustrated when I can't communicate & have no control but am extremely great ful for what I do have. Let him make his own decisions regarding whether or not he wants meds, how much swim etc. he is lucky to have a caring & dedicated family such as you. Stay strong & embrace each other we all have a journey. I have had over 25 grand mals in my life, I've managed in my own way, I am 1 of 7 in my family with epilepsy.Advocate

The one thing you don't do from seizures is heal...it is a condition that will be with you all your life and the best thing to do is find the best anti-convulsant that will hopefully control most of them. There's so many reasons, issues, physical diseases, medications etc that can cause seizures, so treatment is what a person lives with.

@xNiinasw33t
@xNiinasw33t 9 жыл бұрын
I have a "less severe" case of epilepsie. You can't really even tell when I'm having a seizure. There a all different types of seizures ! Its different for everybody. Some are visible some aren't. ALOT of children who have lots of difficulties in school and who are often considered as bad students or even stupid probably have epilepsie. I can tell you from experience that school life SUCKS when you have epilepsy. The problem id that in cases where you can't see the seizures they aren't taken as seriously by teachers who arent well informed and the children can suffer greatly from this because they feel stupid and don't believe they can make it in school. That is why I think that people need to know more about epilepsy and different cases than they actually do.
@carloscaycho8641
@carloscaycho8641 9 жыл бұрын
I have a low degree of epilepsy myself. Admittedly though, I don't tell many people due to the lack of knowledge and conclusions that people who knew I have it and didn't know anything about it have jumped to such as "he is not all there mentally" or "he cannot be like anyone else out there." The unfortunate part of it all, though, is it doesn't increase awareness of it which keeps many people jumping to these conclusions so it's kind of a no win situation.
@xNiinasw33t
@xNiinasw33t 9 жыл бұрын
It's the same here. I'm currently working on a school project right now and no one really lets me join in because I'll repeat things they've already talked about because I "wasn't there" while they were talking about it. They believe that I wasn't actually listening to them. It's really difficult to follow class sometimes and people usually don't understand why I'm so lost. You can explain it to them but no one really think much of it. They also tend to not remember. Even though I know I'm "sick", I can't help feeling stupid sometimes.
@carloscaycho8641

Sounds like you have Absence Seizures a lot. I get them at periods throughout the day and they make me miss out on things teachers say. You're not stupid, you're still capable of being even better than those ignorant classmates and as long as you know that, nothing else matters.

Epilepsy is strange. I had my first grand-mal seizure when I was 15 yrs, in 1979. It was never explained. I had them off and on through my adult life. I crissed crossed neurologists back and fourth as to whoever my health insurance could afford. Never finding a completion. I tried dialantin, beroka, keppra. Niether seemed to work well. Frustration came to be fighting legalities with my drivers license, and the State of Texas. None ever seemed to work. I actually asked a current neurologist face to face, and he said that I didn't have epilepsy. Word for word, he looked at me and claimed that I had a "condition". BS! I will continue these words here. I am honored to be able to speak here. I am 54 now. I may have one seizure per month now, as an adult. When I was 52, I told my doctor to take a hike. I discontinued taking my keppra, I lossed my job, insurance, ect. I may have a seizure per 2 months now, without taking medication at all. Continue your care for your daughter, and your love. I will continue in the future. Jerry Scott.

Besides brain injury, tumor, allergic reaction and neurological disorder caused by injury or accident. If you have none of that, then it is psychological, getting overstressed or overly anxious. More than likely you didn't take good care of yourself mentally and emotionally, you should perhaps see a therapist or psychologist.

Exactly, I believe that with severely disabled people, you may need to simplify how you talk. As in asking yes no questions or multiple choice questions, that helps alot of people process what is being said and then to answer. You might need to use basic and simple words, but you don't have to talk to them in that baby voice.

This child has an amazing network of support. Raising special needs kids is hard, getting services is hard, I am jealous of this families setup and i know it all comes down to how hard they fight. This is a hard life this mom leads, and she clearly does a ton for her child. Could the way they talk annoy him? Maybe... But I raise a nonverbal child, and let me tell you, while they can't speak they sure can make their feeling known if they don't like something. You can see it in this very video. We learn to look for cues other than words, just like you do before your baby can talk. I read 3 comments on this subject, two of them made points and opinions in a kind compassionate manner. Yours was just a baseless attack on someone you have never met.

My uncle is severely mentally handicapped. My family talk to him the same way. I don’t, I’m not perfect. Until i was 9 i was terrified of him,sadly. Anyway, my mom got custody and paid for a place for him to go. He’s there 9-5, it’s a school/job thing. Every morning we’d have breakfast, he got so happy. We’d just sit and I’d play music, which he loved. He would smile and make a noise. I found out he loved apple juice, and id sneak him a couple a day. He also LOVES car rides/ music. I’d take him on drives and his rocking annoyed me, but whatever. He’s a total sweetheart. I’m in college now, but my mom took over. I really wish people would treat them normally. They’re way smarter than we think.

I agree I'm not saying the Mother is a bad person or anything but it sure looked like Zach didn't appreciate being treated like a child and his own Mother can still can talk to Zach at an adult level, he doesn't need to be talked to in a babyish tone of voice, This happened one time to one of my friends and I'll explain I have a friend her name is Connie who has CP and difficulty with speech but she's able to tell what she wants and doesn't ect. and we were out at a restaurant for dinner with another friend Jessica at the time and our friend Jessica told her put her tears away in a babyish tone you're a big girl in a sucky babyish tone of voice, our friend was about to cry because she missed her Mom. My friend didn't appreciate being spoken to like that and I didn't appreciate it either the babyish tone of voice she used with my friend repeatedly I snapped and said for our friend Jessica to shut up, I told her Connie is an adult not a child quit treating her like she's a toddler and talk to her like an adult and our friend Jessica shut right. His Brother and the Teacher talk to Zach like a regular adult which is good and I hope Zach is doing well today.

Zachary you are awesome. Hi my name is Jacqueline and I have lots of disabilities, but epilepsy is not one of them. I am 23 years old and I have Cerebral Palsy and Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis. Cerebral Palsy is caused normally because of brain damage, but in my case it was caused because of I had a stroke when I was a baby. When I was born I was born with Retinopathy Of Prematurity. R.O.P. is a potentially blinding eye disease that causes a growth on the blood vessel inside the eye when the baby is born. The growth goes from the front of the blood vessel to the back of the blood vessel scarring and pulling the retina out of place.
