Zach, our pet macaw free flies on most days. On weekends we take him into the city of Brisbane, to New Farm park where he gets to enjoy freedom. Often he will fly at will, to passing people and invade their personal space. He will land on them without invitation, Zach has not learned this is not welcome by most humans. I do get a laugh out of some reactions, and cringe for some others.

I am amazed and mesmerized by anyone who can let their bird fly free. Very beautiful and well trained birds! I would love it if he landed on my shoulder! He'd definitely have a new best friend! I've had budgies and cockatiels since I was 13 (I'm 35 now). I love birds and will always have them. Keep up the wonderful work with your gorgeous birds!!

So beautiful to watch and oh how I would love to free fly my Dino, but my heart wouldn't be able to take it. At least for the time being, we're sticking with our 30' leash and our Yurt style house, which is basically a huge aviary that he lets me live in with him! :)

Does he ever fly out of sight of you? My friend used to free fly her B&G in Hawaii. Hers would also invade others space, landing on people etc. One day she was free flying her and something spooked her. That had happened before and her bird always flew home. This time she never showed up at home. We think she might have landed on someone and they grabbed her and kept her.

Man thats is beautiful....I am so scared to try and do this with my Greenwing macaw she is about 7 years old now and a little more calm than the previous years and she does mind better now. But I am stilol scared to try this in fear she will fly off and not know her way back or fear of a hawk or something attacking her. I live in a rural area. How did you train your macaw to do this? My macaw has flew around the neighbors house a few times and flew back home but I was so scared she gone.

My partner's Ringneck Parakeet flew away a week ago. He spotted high in a tree and tried to lure it down using carrots and his cage. He never came back. What happens to these birds when they fly away? By the way, the location is North Alabama.

WARNING! It's wonderful to see parrots flying. They were meant to be born free and living in the wild. However, this is extremely dangerous for your pet bird. It puts him at risk of being killed or seriously injured. An unsuspecting dog could easily try to attack the bird and he/she could fly out of the area unintentionally and lose his/her navigation. This happens all of the time. The bird could also be seriously injured if attacked, or a frightened human could inflict injury. DON'T DO THIS!

I'd love to get a Macaw! How did you teach him not to fly away forever? Do Macaws always stay near their owners even if they are new owners, or is this self learnt over years of trust building? How long did you have this Macaw before you let him fly freely? :) Thanks!

@sshakallis Hi, there is always a risk in allowing a bird to fly free. You can take precautions to lessen the risk of loosing your bird. Having an intimate bond with your bird is paramount, being educated about freeflight is equally important. Generally a Macaw is better suited for freeflight because of its size. The smaller the bird the greater the risks. To minimize risk, you need maximum space, maximum bond, patience, and education. Checkout 'Wings at Liberty" website. Ask questions!

@Dorothyinstead How do you teach your parrot to do that? It chooses you instead of the open wild. How did you manage to get that right? Weren't you afraid that the bird might fly away? 99.9% of people who don't clip their birds' wings loses them forever. No matter how closely they were bonded to each other and how happy and well cared for the bird was. Once they find out they can fly they take to the skies. What's your secret?

Okay, guys, you cannot just train a parrot freeflight in a few simple steps. Please do thorough research on the subject before attempting this. Asking on a KZbin video is useless. Also, as a proponent for such, if you are looking into buying a parrot, check your local rescues for birds, too. In other words though, great video! I had heard exotic species of birds are illegal in Australia. Is there a way around that? Or do I have incorrect information?

be very careful these are birds they are not boomerangs! I know fo a fact this bird has spent nights in the tree at this same park when it would not come back down untill the next day. it all looks great in this video but reality is they scare easy. This bird now is housed in an aviary not doing any free flight.
