You will notice that the opening scrawl of Star Wars will NOT have 'Episode IV A New Hope'. GL did put that in originally but was made to remove it upon original release. He put it back in later on. Im not sure whether that was during the original run or in 1981, when it had a theatrical re-release. That was when I first saw Star Wars. I saw Empire first , in 1980...at least 3 or 4 times. Star Wars was re-released after that because they were so popular, and were often shown as a double bill - prior to Return of the Jedi which was probably one of the most anticipated and hyped movies ever! So much so that it perhaps wasn't as.well received at the time, although still huge! This was a time when we also got Harrison Ford doing the Raiders of the Lost Ark and Indiana Jones movies, not to mention Blade Runner. A great time for a young kid who loved action fantasy adventure, and had a bit of a man (boy)-crush on Harrison Ford (mostly wanting to be like him!)

These tapes DO have 'Episode IV A New Hope', as every single VHS release does. The only one time that the original crawl was ever included on an official home video release ever was the 2006 2-Disc DVDs. By the time of the first rental VHS release in 1982 the crawl had already been changed for theaters.

I have had a version of this set since about 1995/6. I am.glad I still have it as its the only original theatrical versions of the films available aside from the bonus discs on the 2006 dvd releases. Its interesting that sometimes you can pick these up for next to nothing and yet they are quite collectable and valuable. I remember the special editions came out in about 1997, that extra slip cover is obviously part of that. I remember being excited about the special editions at the time because they represent 'new Star Wars' in a way, and obviously led into the prequels. Over time I have hated the special editions, and sort of accepted them again. You mentioned the Blu Ray versions. They are ONE version of the special editions. GL did several additions over time. Most notably replacing all Boba Fett scenes with the voice of Jango Fett actor. T... Morrison. NZ actor. I can't remember whether the Greedo shot first happened straight away, or evolved over time. But in my opinion Han shot first. I dont have Blu Rays but I have the original trilogy DVD set which apparently is the same. Most notable thing is Vader saying NOOOOO! When Luke is getting zapped by Emperor in ROTJ. Empire is my favorite SW film, and one of my favourite films period! Because it was the first Star Wars movie I saw (was 9 when it came out). That started my love for Star Wars which is over 40 years. However I feel Return is perhaps the most exciting of the three - of all the films. Star Wars was the greatest movie ever made. Empire was even better. Return rounded the story off brilliantly! The prequels were good - actually a lot better NOW in hindsight. I am disappointed by the Disney films (except maybe for Rogue One). They lack the feel and excitement of the GL films. They are a mess and a lost opportunity. At least we still have the originals which I love to watch quite often.

Every VHS release prior to 1997 is the orginal versions minus the first film's opening title crawl. These films were released on VHS many times in different types of packaging before 1997.

Cuppy -Yeah, I have the 1995 box-set & the Star Wars opening crawl says “episode IV a new hope”. The only alteration I think, as the original only said “Star Wars”.

Do you mind telling me what city you live in? I donated my Starwars videos around this time 2 years ago to Goodwill with that exact version and case. The worst mistake in my life.

Is your copy the rare "Widescreen" version, or is your copy the version that was cropped to 4:3 "FullScreen"?

They are probably the full screen, the widescreen versions have "Widescreen collectors edition" printed at the top of the box.

you got all the names wrong. the original film ( i guess the youngsters call it a new hope ) is actually THE STAR WARS. episode five or whatever the hell kids call it is THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. no "star wars" in its name. the third film, RETURN OF THE JEDI, also did not include the name "star wars".

not really , they are common in thrift stores and ebay , the creator of this video even acknowledges that they can be found on ebay . I got mine at a thrift store for 5 bucks and have seen other sets at Goodwill and other places over the years
