And here I am with a cheapo Takara Kabuto, dragged out of a dumpster, with a bunch of spare parts thrown at it. Heavy cheap gaspipe frame with an old spare carbon seatpost and bmx seat collar (for some reason..), origin8 cockpit and crankset, Weinmann rims with novatec hubs and michelin tires... It's a Frankenstein of a bike, but it's mine. I would absolutely have more fun on a proper frameset, but I still enjoy my trash

I think that’s how most fixed gear ppl start off. If you can get past the initial stage of riding a cruddy bike and enjoying it. Then you’re worthy of a new bike to be committed to purchasing.

Zach, I haven’t got the opportunity to ride fixed. however, I got extremely frustrated with my multi speed for multiple reasons. The straw that broke the camel’s back, was the fact that my rear derailleur hanger stripped out and I actually tried zip tying the RD to the hole (which worked) but being the over analytic person I am, which obsesses over the minimalist detail, I obtained an ss freewheel cog and let me tell you something, it changed my entire attitude and love for riding all over again. I don’t think I even have to explain the feeling because I know you understand. I’m still on the fence about going fixed because of safety reasons, rural little town population 30k is the LEAST amount of bicycle infrastructure, but if it wasn’t for you and your channel I would probably not even gave the single speed a minute of my time. Thank you Zach, you don’t know me, but always remember that you have a positive impact of more lives than you will ever know.

I'm literally in the same boat as you, constantly have had problems with geared bikes in the past, snapped a few gear hangers and bent rear derailleurs, had a bbshd ebike conversion kit but that was full of problems so, I got a car, costs way too much to run for the amount I was using it, I stumbled across this channel randomly one night and got obsessed with fixed gear so I sold my car and got a dolan pre cursa, I love it, live in a town in South of Ireland and I'm riding brakeless, the first week was a learning experience in terms of getting used to no freewheel and no brakes, I'm lifting around the place now though not a bother, wouldn't go back to geared bikes at all, my only problem now is flat tyres

I purchased a Black Label and then a few months later a new crank set from State. I had no issues with the quality of any orders I made however I know if there was an issue State would make it right. I stripped an axle, contacted State to get some spec. information, and they told me since I had a warranty they would just send me a new wheel. I told them it was my fault and they didn't have to do that but they sent it anyway.

They did you a service by stealing the Aventon but you didn't take advantage and got a State 🙃 the only bike on this list worth the money is the Dolan, and even that is the definition of entry level. Haven't tried the Wabi but if Zach praises an entry level Dolan like it's the second coming of JC, I look at his praise for Wabi through the same biased lens.

@Bebo yeah, yeah, what does 'better' mean?
@retardno002
@retardno002 2 жыл бұрын
@Bebo what kind of CroMo are you referring to? You're talking subjective experience and my guess is you don't know your alloys very well either. So what is better about the bike? The tubing? You can get any tubing you want in any geo you want on an NJS frame. There are lots of types of CroMo steel out there, and alloy 'number' barely makes a difference in ride quality. Geo, wheels, and tyre size dictate that way more.
@retardno002
@retardno002 2 жыл бұрын
@Bebo I'm not saying the Wabi is bad, I'm asking how is it better? NJS frames are custom made, the measurements being spot on makes a difference, more than frame material. And I've just been raving about consumer bikes from Europe, you brought in the NJS comparison. I'm just asking how it is better and you're calling it hate? Chill bro, no hating here, your argument is just on shifty terrain.
@retardno002
@retardno002 2 жыл бұрын
@Bebo ok sir, I guess 25 years or riding bikes, and being an engineer amount to nothing against the might of the Wabi and the expertise of the internet comment section, but I'll try to spell it out to you nonetheless: 1. you didn't explain anything, you shared a subjective opinion and backed it up with nothing, there are too many variables to control for and you're just deciding to pin the difference in feel to type of alloy, nice placebo. some bike magazine guys in the 90s did an experiment with a bunch of identical bikes made of different Columbus tubing and they could barely spot any difference between them, and could not tell which is which before the steel types were revealed for each bike. They were all the same size, geo, and kitted out with the same parts (note how size and geometry are different things); 2. again, I'm not hating on the Wabi, it sounds like a great bike and they use some dope alloys to make them, I certainly wouldn't say no to one. on the other hand I'm questioning weather the praise is legit, given how highly the basic Dolan frame is regarded by the person doing the praise (I have an FXE which is Basically a Precursa with mounts); 3. frame material matters (steel, C, Al, Ti), but type of steel much less (see point 1. above). there are many characteristics of the tubes themselves that can matter more than alloy type (butting, profile, thickness, welded or braised, and most of all GEOMETRY) and a whole load of other bike parts that can make a difference to how it feels: stem and saddle length and height, BB height, wheels and tyres, width of the BB shell and crankset QR factor, even the crank length provides a more noticeable difference in 'feel' than the type of steel alloy, and don't even get me started on angles; 4. your 'feel' of the bike is irrelevant, people feel like they're going faster on 23 mm tyres, but they're not, science proved that larger volume tyres have less rolling resistance. however, you do get one bit right - smaller frames are stiffer regardless of what alloy they're made of, so take that as you will regarding your Titanium vs Wabi comparison; 5. spend more time on Sheldon Brown's website, maybe you'll learn a thing or two before arguing with engineers on the internet, and while you're at it, visit Hambini's KZbin channel as well, you'll gain an appreciation for build quality and tolerances and maybe grow to appreciate NJS bikes to their fullest after seeing what the modern bike industry tries to pull off; 6. all I did in my original comment was to highlight all the cool European brands that Zach seems to ignore, you brought in an NJS comparison with loose terms and sprinkled subjectivity on it, complimented me for being a kid (thank you, after an age it's nice to be thought of as young) and then dismissed my opinion because of some wild assumptions on your behalf... 7. 'all NJS bikes are CrMo' - look up how many types of CrMo tubing there are out there, Reynolds 725 which the Wabi Special is made of is also a type of CrMo alloy, so not only are you arguing that a hand built custom made bike from CrMo is worse than a mass produced bike made from CrMo, but you don't even understand what they are made of. I have two bikes made of two different types of CrMo from Columbus (Thron and Cromor) and what makes them feel different is the tube profile and thickness, not the alloy. Feel free to dismiss this comment but If you want more info in my next comment I'm afraid I'll have to charge for the lesson. OK?

Just need a 'Worst Complete Fixed Gear Bikes for Every Budget' video now so people know which models to avoid although must admit I'm happy with cheapo high tensile steel fixed gear bikes myself and Shimano still do loose ball bearing hubs which are easy to maintain and very reliable. They have larger ball-bearings I believe than typical sealed bearing hubs so if greased and adjusted properly should be excellent hubs over the long term. I bought a cheap fixed gear bike in the UK which is very similar to the Jamis Beatnik using a 1040 steel frame I believe.

There is no doubt about it... Look around and buy a quality, steel road frame with horizontal drop-outs. Cold set it to 120mm at the rear. It is easily done with a threaded bar and some nuts and washers. Look online. Then build up the bike using the parts you like. You will not regret it. Build your own wheels of you can.... No fishing needed on a Fixie rear.... All spokes the same length. I'd recommend a flip-flop rear hub, so you can change ratios easily. Quill stem if you can, because... they are better. You will always love a Fixie you build and it isn't difficult.

I did this, for the most part, with new frame and new components. Learned a lot on the journey, including that a build with new components took more time and $$$ than expected. It started when I found a new Bianchi Super Pista frame on ebay, in my size. I wanted the drivetrain to be SRAM Omnium, but those were discontinued at the time, so no new available. Opted for Dura Ace and waited over time to find better/best pricing. New Dura Ace was and keeps getting more expensive. For the wheelset, I decided on H+PLUS SONS ARCHETYPE with Suzue ProMax hubs, Thompsen stem and seatpost and Selle Italia saddle. I collected components for 8 mos and spent $2k for the complete build. I could not be more happy with the bike; built custom as I wanted. But this approach took time and $$$. Frames and components are really constrained, even now; takes time and patience:).

Idk, maybe I'm just wrong or dumb here but I've found buying a used bike and fixing it to be worth it. You can use custom parts, change to be how you want, and honestly, a questionable fixie is like 100$ It'll probably cost you more to fix it in the long run, but you don't gotta do it all at once and you get to start riding. I am still a big car person but I wanna keep miles off my car and gas is expensive. Compared to car mods, bikes feel affordable if not cheap to me. And I welcome the change.

I got a coreline I have upgraded the rear to a 17t and "32" tires and I love it. The 32" continental tires with alot of grip fit perfect but it's quoted because the tire type has reviews that the tire clearance seems to be smaller then claimed. All this to say I love that bike despite riding mainly mountain bikes now but that thing feels great and is light could never sell it. Just a perspective for anyone that sees the comments.

That was gossip. Core line is a name for the manufacturer not you the customer. The manufacturer is sick of dealing with the idiot customer. They've named the product for their own life. The manufacturer is saying you're extremely uneducated and they aren't trying to teach you anything about the bikes.

I own a 2020 Aventon Cordoba which was used as part of an Art installation. The Artist purchased the bike solely for its aesthetic qualities not for its technical abilities as a bogus track slayer. I have rebuilt her to be used as a training bike. Syntace stem, Ritchey WCS Streem bars, Sram s500 levers, Thomson elite layback seatpost, berk carbon saddle, oval concepts s900 rim brakes, white industries uno 17 tooth freewheel, BLB Super Pista 165 mm crank married to a 50 tooth CNC chainring. Shimano xt clipless pedals I had the lack lustre Push wheels re tensioned and I slapped on a pair of Continental Super Sport plus tyres in 25 mm. Even though Aventon is hated and seen by most cliquey Berlin fixie riders as a pretend fashion brand she is beautiful and can handle the tuff Berlin streets because I have in essence created something much better. My other bike, which is my actual race bike is an 2010 All City Nature Boy SSCX in the awesome lime colour.. completely binged out with Ritchey WCS parts in wet white, TRP EUROX magnesium cantilever breaks, Mavic Ksyrium Equipe wheels in white you get the jist, she is a real head turner, many Roadies on their 10 grand superbikes have stopped me to enquire about the steel beast. This is a cyclocross weapon, possibly the best bike I have built up and I've been building bikes for nearly 40 years. Blessings from Berlin

Would be great to see you do a more up to date run through of cranksets. Years later now I'm looking at finally replacing my crankset (crank arms don't like to stay tight any more, probably misshapen, it's a Sturmey Archer FCT26). Looking around prices have changed a lot. I can get a Miche Pistard for less than Sugino RD2, for instance. Andel is not widely/readily available (at least in Europe) would love to see up to date opinions on quality and value!
