I think it was just hard for fans to deal with the whirlwind nature of their relationship and he's a comedian, which people aren't used to their faves dating (and comics are known to push the envelope). But of course, their relationship was so rushed I was not at all surprised it didn't survive Mac's death (and for Ariana, I'm sure that was doubly hard as she was unfairly blamed for it).
