I'm already an EDC backpack guy. Not a big pack, it's a camelback mule minus the water bladder at the moment. Being a father of 2, a toddler and an infant, it makes it easier to carry my EDC and their EDC. I'll probably still carry it once they've grown out of needing certain things.

I’ve been using the “Fanny pack” for two years in summer. I wear thinner shorts in summer and I hate things in pocket. It’s also great to be an edc organizer. I just put things in and go. I don’t have to load and unload my stuff coming and going. And if I don’t need it I get what I need and slide it under a seat. It’s also a way to carry medical stuff, epipens and allergy meds.

I just must appraciate the choice of locations for the backrounds. You do a amazing job choosing different visually interesting spots, which is much more enjoyable than just talking in some studio, like for example Taylor from Best Damn EDC uses... it gets really boring real fast, when you watch dozens or hundereds of videos in the same location. So props to you both Zac and Jamie !!! ❤

I have a bunch of different pouch sizes (mostly as tool organizers for specialized activities or hip belt attachments for my pack). On their own I mostly use a Maxpedition Jumbo Versipack, because I can carry a lot of tools around the woodlot (Big Boy Silky Saw, Staple Gun, etc) that wouldn't fit in a tiny pouch but aren't enough to require a backpack.

A good showing, thanks. Having used "Fanny Packs"(actualy true side waist bags) way back in the early 80s thru the early 90s while still 195lbs at 6'3", and again in my late 50s to my current age of 64 - now 280lbs and all that goes with that, one major issue I've had with these kinds of packs is that while off the body, they have copious room to put things in and are easily accessed. But once put on the body and they take the shape of the waist curve, that space is seriously diminished with items harder to insert and retrieve. And while worn, accessing most Zippers is often a struggle requiring both hands , one on the zipper, one on the bag at sometimes a weird angle. And what is now an issue is that with my smaller sized "Spare Tire" that has come with age, these bags are way to high under it making it hard to use them successfully too, so a slightly lower slung design would be preferable too. I felt this issue was just as valid when I was younger and skinnier. What I want and as yet haven't seen is one that compensates for these issues and is still not a military style "Butt Pack" in the end but rather a side waist bag. Would like any ideas and recommendations...

Ow goodie! A new Zac in the wild video while I’m tweaking my edc 🥰 Bum bags/ fanny packs are awesome for those few extras bits and bobs especially on hot summer days when you don’t want a backpack making you all sweaty. I think you’ll like the Helikon SERE pouch. Plenty of organisation, multiple carry options 500D Cordura and it’s about $40 (£20-£30) from memory. And no freaking Velcro!! The Grayl BottleLock Hip Pack looks fantastic.

I’ve also used the Bandicoot on some fly fishing trips. You can remove the waist strap and run your sternum strap through the back from your backpack. And allows you to have easy access to items you need without taking off the backpack. Also gives you a spot to attach items like forceps and a handheld radio

It's like a treasure chest strapped to my face, keeping all my essentials within sight. Along with the Mulepak Grande, I like the Sidecar. It has a divider in the larger zippered pocket, so at least there *some* room for separating/organizing. It also has a loop on the front, so you can carry something on the outside if you need quick/constant access to a small tool, pen, etc.

The sling which can also be a hip pack, like the Peak Design V2 6L, is very useful in a more urban setting. For general walking around, its great as a hip pack. In more crowded places, the sling on my back is in the way less than hip pack mode or a backpack. On public transportation, having the sling in front is most convenient when sitting or standing.

I like sling bag because I like to think of them as a smaller backpack with 1 strap. Since I often carry backpacks on only one strap I find sling bags perfect. That's also why I go for the larger backpack style of sling bags. The ~15L size works perfect for what I might need throughout the day and having them tighter on my body than something like a messenger bag really helps with weight distribution. Other than that I like the concept of the hip pouch but I don't know how I feel about extending my waist circumference too much, and a lot of what I currently have on my belt/pockets are stuff I don't want to start digging around for.

I've been using Helikon-Tex Bandicoot since march 2022 and it is still in a very good shape. What could be useful here is some way to compress it when it is not fully packed. But still I can recommend this without hesitation. You can also take a look at smaller option - Helikon-Tex Possum.

I have been using the Fjallraven High coast pocket for about a year and love it! It comes with a sling, has a belt loop, and multiple attachment point to lay it out however you want to carry it with plenty of space for everything needed. I find that I don't use a hip pack often, but when I travel, especially road trips they're great. I can wear sweats and stay comfortable and all my normal pocket stuff goes right there. Fast and easy for drive through and gas station stops when I have to pay for something and they just work for me when I'm doing that or when I'm going for a run.

The only issue I have with some hip/belt pouches is that you need a belt for them for them to be usable. I personally don't often wear belts or often pants that require a belt. I like the Patagonia one because you can tighten it to your side with the strap. I currently use the Evergoods Mountain Hip Pack for EDC nowadays (has a 3.5L capacity). It carries everything I like to have on me on a day-to-day basis and is comfortable while doing so. The biggest things I put in it are a med kit and a jewelry organizer. It also can tighten to your body which eliminates any swinging/dangling and centers the weight distribution too (which I assume the Patagonia can do as well). Evergoods also has a 2L sling bag I might reduce to sometime. This wasn't mentioned in the video, but I'd like to see some liter capacity comparisons if that's viable.

I have a “skunk” bag that I love. It can be worn comfortably around the waist or over the shoulder. It’s locking, and even if you don’t lock it, it has a dual zipper system (to keep in smells for whatever reason…) which makes pickpocketing / getting into it if it’s off at the beach etc. less easy. (Although someone can obviously take the whole bag and cut through it if locked.) Capacity is not huge but the organization is decent, I love it and use it whenever my pockets aren’t enough but I don’t need a backpack. Thanks for another great review!!

It’s specifically designed to also be a sling with a wider shoulder strap. Stays tight to me, very comfortable, and very easy to pull the bag around from back to side to front as needed. I also frequently clip a heavier insulated water bottle on the strap when over my shoulder and it’s a great easy way to carry that too. Doesn’t get in the way and I pretty much forget that it’s there.

This is for warmer weather were I don't have to carry extra clothes. It even can fit two water bottles in the side packs. In the 90's I used to use a fanny pack for mountain biking. I would go on fifty mile rides in the mountains. This also had shoulder straps and actually had two water bottle carriers built in. I don't remember the name of it now I go on maybe ten mile bike rides in the town I live in plus I'm older and do more things rather than just ride my bike all the time.

Not only for expanding pocket carrying capacity, but the roomier ones can be employed for off-loading weight from a backpack. To complement my 30L vest-style pack carrying bulky lighter items, a 5-10L lumbar pack for water carry and other small heavy items works well for day or overnight use. Zac. Another informative video. Thank you. I have gone back to the old school hip/fanny pack for 2 reasons, mostly. 1: My stuff is wearing out the pockets on my older pants and I don't want new(er) pants to suffer the same fate. 2: I don't really like a lot of stuff on my belt. But I still want it easy to get to when I need it and a back pack is too big. Like walking the dog or shopping.

The right size hip pack that I found so far is the Helikon Tex Possum. Smaller than the Bandicoot so it's less weight tugging at your waist and it's small enough to side carry on your waist. I find that the Bandicoot sticks a bit farther out from the body and difficult to have at your side. I have a tier system that has a pocket organizer that can go into the hip pack. The hip pack can go into my daypack(12L) or my EDC work/get home pack(20L) without having to move items between packs.

I have the bandicoot and it works pretty well. But I also have a small sling pack that I have switch to just because it can fit diapers and wipes, and I don't have to carry a big diaper bag.

Good video Zac. I have been wearing a hip pouch for several years to carry my IPhone in. My pouch is a Vanguard, and holds not only my phone, but my Surefire flashlight, a spare battery, a Mophie, and a couple ink pens. I still carry a wallet and a lot of EDC stuff, but the pouch makes it possible for me to carry my phone without scratching it up. If I couldn’t use a hip pouch, I would have to seriously adjust my wardrobe these days.

I use a Gregory fanny pack for when I go fishing. I can carry most of the tackle/gear I need for a quick trip to the lake or river.

I wear a Hill People Gear fanny pack. It’s tough, it’s modular, it’s good looking and it’s designed for CCW.

I got the Tomtoc sling bag a few weeks ago and i totally love it dude, not going to lie. The wife won't tolerate me having a fanny pack lol she will allow the sling bag though. To be honest the sling bag is a better size for me to fit everything i need, a few tools, headphones, power bank, notepad, boo-boo kit, sunglasses, phone, keys etc. I can not sing it's praises enough. Love the show by the way 😎

I’m wondering if you’ve tried the Maxpedition Roly Poly belt pouch? Not to be confused with the roly dump bag they sell, which also can mount on a belt. The belt pouch has one long zipper on top. Can even fit a small water bottle. And it rolls up pretty compactly when not in use.

Thanks Zak. These are all quality "kit bags" but I've opted to use a 5.11 LV6. It's very configurable as a belt bag, fanny, sling or add on to my backpack. I large enough to carry a compact weapon (if needed)along w/ meds and tools, but small enough to be convenient for EDC. IMHO for me, it's the best of all opts. Thanks again for a great vid.

I went with the MOAB 6 for something between a backpack and messenger bag, the Lvl 6 seems like a good option too.

I do the cross body method because it's smaller and more convenient to carry, access, and take on and off than a backpack which is always on your back. And having it loose lets me move it out of the way, whereas having it worn on my belt or around my waist has less on the fly adjustability, and is uncomfortable on my waist after a while. Thanks for the review, I've been looking to upgrade to something with more internal organization and more durable materials

Thanks Zac. Awesome vid and insight. I'm rocking the Alapaka go sling mini as a Fanny. Also bought the viktos upscale 2 for my ccw but the mole on the back can lash a belt and I could make it a huge fanny lol

I've been rocking the Bandicoot for over a year now and I love it. Thought the QC sucked, as the zipper broke in about 6 months. I modified it with a 2 inch wide strap and these days mainly carry it as a sling. It's definitely my keeper for the foreseeable future!

Hey man I’ve been kicking around the pocket extender idea for a bit,, just haven’t wanted to go down the rabbit hole. Thank you for regular dude reviews 🤘🏼🤘🏼,, I have recently purchased some round house raw denim jeans and have realized that the old school cut feels great and the deep pockets comfortable hold all my stuff👍🏻👍🏻,, CHEERS Man

I'm not really "fashion conscious" so I like the waist pack when I am away from my car or home. I wore a small fanny pack when I was working and tour/visting NYC. I like having my wallet secured and things like pepto, pain reliever, bandaids, tweezers, etc... because having your day spoiled just because of some small ailment or having to pay $5 for a couple tylenol is not how I wanna roll. I like to have a bigger Ozark Trail waist pack ready in my vehicle for just in case rather than a full backpack.

I have to say the Fjallraven High Coast Hip Pack is almost identical to the Patagonia bag, but just much better, one extra pocket, internal pocket, less straps, higher quality. However it is also a smidgen heavier and 1,5 liter instead of the patagonia 1 liter, to me they feel about the same size though.

Great video, I've been on the hunt since phones got huge, I've been running a voodoo tactical "wallet" on my belt, open because my phone is huge and I like the access, only falls out if I'm upside-down. On the outside there's a place for my olight wm2 and a few sharpies and lumber pencil, also a separate space on the inside for other stuff. That's mine 👍😜

Zac, let me inform you on the best one out there - the Special Operations Equipment Fanny Pack. Heirloom grade quality. And if you want a bigger version, look at the FUPA or the FUPA XL. Even comes w shoulder straps and waist strap. Oh, and btw, made in the USA!
