I remember when he played for the Brewers. It was around the same time my anxiety disorder ramped up. I was going to quit playing softball (I didn't like being the center of attention when batting and physical activity was an anxiety trigger), but then my dad told me about him. I remember that he had a full page picture in the newspaper, and I taped it to my wall. He was an inspiration, and I didn't quit. I now play college ball!

What an awesome connection to this guy. I know he might be "weird", but it's also worth understanding that being in front of cameras and even being in front of a crowd to pitch is hard for this guy. But his love for the game and pure drive is what allows him to do this. Stick to your guns, know who YOU are and not what everyone else is seeing, and you'll do great! Good luck.

Yeah I've only heard that he struggles with social anxiety, so not sure if it's autism. I appreciate the main comment in this thread because when I saw the title of the video I wanted to say something because I'm not so sure that calling someone with social anxiety "weird" is the nicest thing we could be doing. But we here in AZ loved Greinke when he was pitching for us, so much love from the Grand Canyon State ✊

True Story: Zack's dad was my 7th grade geography and social studies teacher. His dad was an odd guy, but very nice and a good teacher. He rarely smiled or engaged in loose conversation but always stayed on task. One day as he was passing out assignments I was telling the classmate next to me about going to baseball practice after school. Mr Greinke heard this and lit right up and started talking to me about about his son and that he was a really good player and blah-blah-blah!!! Mr Grease Monkey (his nickname) never reacted like that before, or ever again. Everybody in class was surprised to hear him talking so relaxed and happy. I always remembered the odd 7th grade teacher. Several years later I bought a pack of Bowman baseball cards and pulled a Zack Greinke rookie card. I flipped it over and saw he was from Apopka FL and knew exactly who he was. I've just always had a better understanding of why he is the way he is. Like father like son.🙂

Blocking everything out is just something you do and don't really feel any way about it. Until you realize you are alone and everyone thinks you are weird and a nutcase, your accomplishments mean nothing. The only reason you even try is because you want to feel a connection or something other than lonliness. But nothing will ever be able to bridge that chasm. You spend so much time thinking you are the problem and its your fault even though its everyone else's lack of empathy and compassion because they don't get you, not that many will ever try.

@@adrianr354 I cant speak for anyone else, I can only speak for myself. Alot of times I would make faces its because I was trying to make myself more welcoming, *smile* / *not that much dumbass* / *great now you're frowning* / *sh!t, they think it was them* Most of the time, the act is for others, for a sense of ease. It sucks being treated like a pariah. So being seen as just another average person can be the greatest accomplishment and emotionally gratifying. Alot of people apply themselves to that interaction and see it as being fake and usually with nefarious intent. Everyone has had situations that are hard to act properly. That can be everyday for alot of people. It is soul crushing for some and can find themselves believing the assumptions being made. These things are hard to admit too, because it acknowledges the one thing that is fought against the most, being different. Hiding behind a keyboard can make that easier for some. I can't stand the use of language that I am saying this with, but I wont change it. The thought I can give to anyone to remember, life isn't meant to be spent alone, and that everyone wants to be happy. Someone that seems alittle off doesn't hurt you. Judge everyone by their actions, because that's where their nature is shown.

I love Greinke for one of the coolest reasons a kid could have. I was about 8 (2008) when I started pitching and he played for our Royals. My Dad and I met him outside at the old 'cage' where the players used to park at Kauffman. He turned me down an autograph and I was devastated. My Dad had emailed him and explained that we were huge fans of his, and die hard supporters of the team, but that moment had broken a new little pitcher's heart for a little bit. Zack personally wrote back, asking for our home address, that he'd like to send me something. He then apologized and explained a bit about his mental state and social anxiety, which of course my 8-year-old self knew nothing about. But he promised us he would try to be better, especially toward fans. A week later I got an envelope in the mailbox that you would've thought equaled Christmas for me. Inside were two signed Greinke rookie cards and a hand written letter to me and my Dad. Not only was that amazing, but his actions spoke louder than words. Every game we went to afterward that we stayed after for autographs, Zack was one of the first ones to come out of the gate and start signing for every little pitcher out there. I'm almost 21 now with terrible knees, shot out shoulders, can barely throw a ball more than once, and I make music. But looking back on it, I really understand more of what was going on with this man and I respect and appreciate his actions that much more. Thank you for such a fond memory, Zack.

It was ridiculous. I've been a sports official for 40 years and I don't know many of my fellow officials who would use such poor judgement (or lack of any judgement might be a better way to say it). My first reaction was that he was mad at himself for not getting to the bag on time. Unless the rules specifically call for an ejection when a player spikes the ball, or unless he said something to the umpire (which he didn't), I would not have ejected him. I have seen a LOT worse from a player who actually was showing up an umpire and there was no ejection.

I remember once at the Dodgers' spring training camp he stared me down as he walked to the clubhouse. I didn't care because it didn't seem malicious or anything. He seemed to be studying me. There were autograph dealers near me who were talking shit about him before he even arrived. So when he finally arrived and started signing things he skipped them like he had a psychic sense that they talked shit about him. He signed for me first. So of course when he left the insults intensified. "Where do you think he hides the bodies? Freak." At the very least he keeps it very interesting.

@ Autograph dealers are scum-- whether it's Florida, New York, California or Arizona. People have poked fun at John Travolta's performance in The Fanatic. As I've said to them, I lived in L.A. for twelve years and was around dealers for most of that time. Quite a few of them behaved in the same childish way Travolta behaves in that movie-- except more maliciously. Travolta's character was kind of a sad figure. Those people are scum.
@patrickmorgan4006
@patrickmorgan4006 3 жыл бұрын
@@AnnusMirabilus I've never heard of that movie. I'll have to find it. Autograph dealers are generally assholes. And I will never understand why a person would buy an autograph from them, or anyone else. The whole point of having an autograph is to remember a personal encounter with the person who signed it, not to remember a cash transaction with a guy who bought it from another guy who might have been there when the thing was signed. The autograph itself is meaningless. Who gives a sh*t that you have something with a name written on it.
