I think this keeps up the theme of The Giant and The Giantslayer playing a deadly game of cat and mouse, hunting each other in the dark across the night, coming to terms with each other's wits as they realize during this tense hunt the methods of each others madness. Zack Hamsey's method to his madness however is plain to see in his masterworks.

It seems David, after becoming the new Goliath, the new tyrant, crawls further and further into his madness. Power made him this way: the little guy is now the powerful being, and he intends to profit and to keep it this way. The former savior becomes the threat. As he realizes that another David can kill him and take his place, he becomes paranoiac, tracking and killing more and more.
