What many people don't know is Leonard Cohen was an atheist and had nothing to do with God or religion, it's about love relationships. I've always found it interesting how the majority of people perceive it as a religious song. Great reaction!
@chanawekser38832 жыл бұрын
I remember when he was still alive,he said this song was about the breakup of his relationship. He did bring in some references to some biblical stories from his youth...David and Bathseba, Samson , etc. When he sang it then, itl had another stanza or 2 that were references to his relationship...I think it was his wife. The amended version was to "clean it up a little" when churches started using it.

Pentatonix is an a capella group. No instruments in this, just voices, beatboxing and body percussion. They are primarily known for covers, but they do have almost 40 original songs as well. You mentioned you mostly do rap reactions so people are going to come out of the woodwork to tell you they also rap. Covers, though... Mackelmore (Can't Hold Us, Thrift Shop), very censored Nicki Minaj, Iggy Azalea in Ariana Grande's Problem. Nothing too deep. If you're more interested in breaking down lyrics I'd suggest the originals. At least one member wrote on every original song but one (they got that one from Coldplay). Unfortunately, most of the best lyrically don't have videos. I'll leave the actual recommendations to someone else.

Hey Brother, I'm glad you took the jump to listen to these guys. They have so much material it still blows my mind. They have over 200 songs, both covers and originals. Even if you don't do any more reactions to them, I highly recommend taking a deep dive into their music. You'll be blown away by their arrangements. Converting regular songs to a capella is an artform that they have mastered. They pretty much inspired a whole new subcategory of a capella with percussion and bass driving it. But their originals are also pretty dope. Thanks for the great reaction. Hope to see more from Pentatonix!
@shirleymoffat33382 жыл бұрын
Pentatonix also do originals, not just covers. Leonard Cohen wrote this song about a relationship breakup so it wasn’t intended as a religious song. He said before he died that this was the best cover of his song. Check out the Pentatonix version of Bohemian Rhapsody, their Daft Punk medley (their first of three Grammy winners) and many many others. The members are Scott Hoying (first singer, blonde, baritone), Mitch Grassi (counter tenor, wearing hat in this video) Kirsty Maldonado and Kevin Olusola, the beat boxer (who also sings and plays cello). The guy with the beard and beanie is Avi Kaplan, (you thought he looked like Jesus) who is an opera trained basso profoundo who left the group in 2017 and is now forging a successful but very different career. You might like to check out his solo work. He was replaced by Matt Sallee. The followers of Pentatonix call themselves Pentaholics and are very loyal and will follow and subscribe to anyone who reacts to the large body of work this group has created since they won the Sing Off season 3 back in 2011.

Leonard Cohen, the man who wrote "Hallelujah" was a self-avowed athiest of Jewish descent. Regarding the meaning of the song, Leonard Cohen said: “This world is full of conflicts and full of things that cannot be reconciled. But there are moments when we can… reconcile and embrace the whole mess, and that’s what I mean by ‘Hallelujah’. The song explains that many kinds of hallelujahs do exist, and all the perfect and broken hallelujahs have equal value. It’s a desire to affirm my faith in life, not in some formal religious way but with enthusiasm, with emotion.”

Rap is talking. If you can sing like these ppl, of course you can rap. Why do you think every person in the world and his aunt Betty raps: because it is only talking in time with a beat. Singing requires a musical ear for tone, tune, and greater voice dynamics and control.

For their less than year old originals with good lyrics I suggest for listening Anchor, A little Space, Never Gonna Cry Again. For older originals: Take me home, Run to you. And Christmas originals: Evergreen and That's Christmas to me. Their lyrics in band go more to happy and sweet, even when some have quite a backstory or are really timeless. Their lyrically sad songs are more in their solo works. Though it may be too early to mention THAT rabbit hole.

This is NOT a religious song. It does use Biblical imagery to describe someone who'd been betrayed by love before (she took your throne and she cut your hair), but the song is about breaking through the pain of the lover's past to allow love to happen again. "I heard there was a secret chord that David played and it pleased the Lord" refers to the perfection of love that does exist, but acknowledging that the lover doesn't believe in it (but you don't really care for music, do ya?"). Other lyrics refer to the lover's treatment of love like a war (flag on the marble arch, love is not a victory march), something to hold as a conqueror, and the reference "how to shoot somebody who outdrew you" indicates that attitude that says the lover wants to win at all costs. Try listening to it without thinking it's a religious song. The location of the shoot was a brilliant choice, a landscape that is barren and open, where there are no places to hide, and the fear that nothing will flourish in the wasteland. Don't think there were any intentional halos, and while Avi does resemble Jesus, well that's just Avi being Avi. Enjoyed you viewing this group for the first time. Would love to see you watch some of their other songs.
